Here's a tutorial and some tips for planning out your nursing prereqs.
Keep these things in mind:
Comment any other tips you have for those planning their prereqs.
1. Frequently check your school's prereq requirements while you're in school because they may change.
2. Make sure you keep the app deadline in mind as you plan your schedule.
3. Keep in mind that classes can be done in full or part term and online.
4. If you're going to a community college then summer classes aren't covered by financial aid ( this may not be the case with all schools so just do your research).
5. Try to get your coreqs done BEFORE nursing classes start.

I just wanna say, Take what your academic advisor says with a grain of salt and do your own research. I finished my prerequisites in 3 semesters: Fall, Spring, & Summer but my Advisor told me it’ll take me 2+ years to finish. Most of my classmates took advice from crappy advisors and were set back because of it.

Yep! They throw in needed classes on you, especially if you are receiving financial aid bc some schools have credit requirements.

Yep! My advisor actually told me not to even try to get into a class this quarter and i went on the wait list and got in one.. also she told me i had to be full time to get financial aid.. mind you i got an 11k grant so im worried because i wanted to take one class this summer. I havnt been in school for 3 years. I contacted financial aid and they told me what she said is false smh.

Only have physiology left but this is good the LVN program I like nearby has different pre reqs besides what I've taken so I'm trying to fit those in that extra semester in between and summer semester. Great timing on the video! Yes those guidance counselors will stack you with unnecessary classes they want you to succeed but also to take the long way around. Check with your school I thought I wasn't going to get summer aid but they actually gave me more than I needed for the class and books helped with bills

I was thinking about doing that myself. But got on indeed to look at the need for that kind of job and saw 6 jobs! SIX! And the hospital I work at doesn’t even hire them. So I changed my mind REAL QUICK.

This is good advice I messed up and did all the easy classes first but before you do BIO ask the professor over the science department to over ride biology for you since I had A & P at Applied tech I didn’t have to take biology

My prerequisite are: Chemistry Math A&P I A&P II MicroBiology There are some others, but the be already finished a bachelors in Psychology so I have many of those courses. Hoping to get the prerequisite done in less than two years, part time.

thank you, queen! I'm close to receiving my AA degree in Music Technology but i realized that this degree is more of a hobby for me. I'm 23, and decided to change my major to nursing. my community college doesn't offer to nursing program, but I am trying to take the prereqs before transferring to a local nursing program at a community college here in San Jose California!

@@richme8027 i advised you to talk your academic counselor or some things you can do now to prepare or possibly ap classes for credit. college academic counselors will set up your educational plan when you get to college of what you need to take in classes

@@cruuul my community college have dual credit classes with high schools in my state. Many high school students graduate with both their high school diploma and their associate degree. If you are able to do dual credit do it. If not then after you graduate you can do your prerequisites and apply for an ADN/ASN or you could apply to a university and get your BSN. For me I did my prerequisites then applied for the nursing program at my local community college because I graduated high school in 1998. Hope my explanation helps.

Gonna take me a year to finish the last 6 classes. Bc i have to take the classes in order bc they are pre reqs for the other classes I need smh. This summer quarter i took stats, psych 200 and communications and got all a’s. So i am thinking of doing fall quarter: critical thinking, chem 121, winter: bio 211, anthropology, spring: A&P, summer: micro biology

Not necessarily, I took college algebra after all of my science courses. And I took my other math & English classes while taking the science classes. But it wouldn’t hurt to take them earlier if you have issues with reading or basic math.

Hi, thank you for informative video. I am planning to take all pre-reqs in 1st sem: Foundations of Chemistry, Bio 1 and psych in spring sem 1st session (12 weeks) and Eng 101 in 2nd session (summer 6 weeks). I need your suggestion, is this doable? Also planning to do some part-time job... but challenge is I must get A in all pre-reqs to qualify

Math 020 and 050 are required before math 140. There are more requirements if you want to pursue a BSN. I’m in the STLCC UMSL dual enrollment program there are so many more classes and four of the nursing prerequisites required are only available at the UMSL campus 🤦🏾‍♀️

Hi, I went to applied tech. Good luck with EVERYTHING. I congratulate you on coming this far. I can't imagine attempting to go to school in an entirely different language especially as a nurse. great video! thank you. I took sociology for the summer. I have enrolled for BIO, PSY, Maths for the fall. How many total units do we require to get enrolled for an associate degree in nursing? Some are saying 24 general education and a total of 60 credits with reading proficiency required. I am a little confused about the total requirement of units.

Look at your college! Mine doesn't have a certain about of credits, but you need to have a math, composition and a&p1 to start. All the others are coreqs.

I’ve been in my community college for like 3 years now and I’m getting my associates of arts. I decided I wanted to do nursing but there’s like 5 classes I need before I can get into nursing school so I have to get another associates degree but in science and prehealth emphasis. It’s annoying because my advisors had picked my classes and I’ve taken at least 7 classes I didn’t need. I’m afraid I’m going to get burnt out because I’ve been at the same school for this long. It’s discouraging when people my age that I graduated high school with are graduating college. I wish these advisors didn’t have me take classes I didn’t need. I’m hoping to graduate with both degrees and move onto nursing school in 2023. Unfortunately I’ll be 25 before I get my nursing degree. I need physiology, microbiology, statistics, medical terminology, and human lifespan development. 19 credit hours total.

Im in community college applying for my schools RN program. I talked to some ppl who took A&P 1 + 2 . They said it wasn't hard because you're going everyday so the info is still fresh. Ideally the only class your taking in the summer. While the test were back to back, but not in depth because of the time crunch. (I wanted to share that info. I did not take in the summer so I can not fully support this. Also keep in mind idk if they were working too, probably best not to work that summer if you do plan on this)

I am so confused with the school system here as I didn't grow up here. I'm looking at the catalog year of my community college and it says I need 72 credit hours to complete my ASN/ADN. 30 of those 72 credits are for prerequisites only. You listed Microbiology and Human G&D as core requisites but in my school catalog it is considered pre requisites. I just want to know if im on the right track as it is very confusing for me.

Question FavNurseB Do you recommend taking a microbiology class along with statistics or College algebra? And… FYI I’m terrible at math… 😊 would you recommend which math, mentioned above? For “a math”, I can choose either one. These are my last two prerequisite classes left, a micro and math; before clinicals. I rather get them out the way now vs during clinicals. Your thoughts are appreciated.

If you’re not good I don’t recommend it, college algebra is hella fast pace and if you’re not good you need to study a lot to get it. if you are nursing major you should be aiming for an A in microbiology requiring a lot of studying, so you don’t want take other hard classes that will take up your time. Now what you can do is take math online at Sophia learning then transfer. Sophia learning is self pace learning so you can finish as fast as you want or as slow as you want. it’s only 99 a month. One con is since it’s a month you might want to finish so you don’t get charge the next month pro is you take as many classes as you want In a month then cancel your subscription and you can start at anytime you don’t have to wait till fall/spring and it’s really do-able and way easier and if your school is on the list you can get the credits transfer… check the website and see if your school is on the list if not search for your school on can’t find my school(btw the only offer basic core class like Eng, math, history, art, psyc…. Not nursing prerequisite classes)

Hi I’m thinking about becoming a nurse but I want to major in human biology. If I do all my prerequisites that is required for nursing would the process be any longer than if I applied as a nursing major ? Ik how competitive it is to apply as a nursing major and that’s why I want to open my options to other majors .

Hi, it depends on the school. Technically your aren’t in the nursing program until you complete the prereqs anyways so it really shouldn’t make a difference what you major in as long as you take the required classes for the program. Let me know if that makes sense.

Okay hi , can anyone give me advice ? Sorry to spring this here but I don't have anyone to ask about such :) I'm 16 and I plan to move to America for my education. This question may seem ignorant but what do I major in while in community college ? Do I major in nursing the same way ? On all the sites I went on I saw ADN and such programs but I just want a BSN...I think I'm going about it the wrong way I'm not sure. Someone on quora told me I should just go community college in America then go to a university there( I currently live in Barbados). I don't wanna risk not being eligible for university because I did my pre requisites overseas

In california, you can take a 4 credit anatomy and then a 4 credit physiology, OR you can take 4 credit A&P1 and then 4 credit A&P2.

That's so much money for pre reqs😲 I have a "adult continuing education" program in my area and they will let you do night classes to go towards your grade 12 or as pre reqs all you need to pay is 50$ for your text book and you get the money back after the course

I thought what she wrote was expensive as well, but I live in california and if you are over 25 and considered independent, your EFC is literally 0, which qualifies you for tuition fee waiver. Tuition is completely free, books however depends on if you can qualify for EOP program, they give 600$ for book vouchers if you qualify.

They want money so they pile on the prereqs. But when You are done, you are DONE! It’s going to be a good feeling. I would just focus of which ever one’s fit your schedule or that seem interesting and make sure u constantly look at the requirements for your program bc they love to remove and add required classes

You can just apply when you get all the requirements needed for the nursing program you plan to apply for. My advisor was trying to talk me into taking more time to actually receive a Health Science degree to be able to apply for the nursing program but all you need is to complete the requirements for your nursing school.

It depends on a lot of factors like, how good are you at science, are you taking other courses and will it be all online. But it is definitely doable

You have to check the site. There’s a list of states that recognize the degree, MO is one of them

YourFavNurseB my name is Jessica Walker and I'm a nursing student I took counseling 12 in August of 2021, and my final grade I got a B, I took speech in the winter semester of January 4, 2022, and it was a pass or fail class now I'm taking Biology 3 in the spring semester of February 14, 2022, and it will end on June 14, 2022, including with Lab my class is online zoom and my Lab is done worksheets fill in the blank and reading the chapters along with a video and my professor will give us 3 or 4 questions she will make up on her own all we do is read the chapters.

Can I plan to study as below: Spring = Bio , Math Alg , ( Chem ) Summer = A & P I ( or Chem) Fall = A & P II , Micro , Nurs life span Please advise me. Thank you.

Hmm it looks pretty good I would say do chem on its own and see if your school has 8 week classes that way you can take A&P one and two in the same semesters if not then I think the way you have it will work. Do you have to take bio before taking micro?

@@yourfavnurseb9699 yes. But I don’t know A &P II it’s difficult which I can do with Chem on same time or not? Or I can do Bio Math and Chem on the Spring on the same semester? So my background,I have a bachelors ‘s degree in Art. I never study in science before that why I don’t have idea for science classes.Please advise.

Is it possible to work two PRN jobs while taking two prerequisites?? I’m taking A&P I & retaking Probability&Statistics!! Classes are only two days a week! What do you suggest??

Depends on you as a student and how much u pick up. Take it slow as far as how many days you work until you get a feel for the classes. But doing PRN is good that way you aren’t committed to a set schedule

I did it, but I was working as a nurse and was able to work 8 or 16 hour shifts so that helped me to only have to work 3 days a week. I also was able to work any shift so that gave me flexibility. I think it’s all possible you just have to make it work. Maybe start with 2 classes at a time and see how that workload is for you. Of course what classes you take makes a difference too because different classes require more of your time (math and science take a lot of time to study for esp math). It also depends on you as a student and how well you study or how much you already know about the subjects. All in all, as I stated it’s all possible but you have to see how to make it work for you.

It really depends on how you go about doing it and where u are in your education and what the school requires. But yes prereqs can take about 2 years and the actually rn can take 2 years as well plus longer if there is a waiting list

My college requires that we have microbiology, Anatomy I and 2, and Chemistry completed before even applying to the nursing program.

In Tennesee u still have to take all ur general ed classes in-order graduate from community college or university, like English comp 1 and 2, History 1 and 2, college algebra, psychology, 6 hours of humanities, oral communications, 2 natural science, 2 behavioral sciences on top of your A and P 1-2, micro, statistics, principles of nutrition, psychology, and human growth and development. After taking all of these classes then u are able to apply to the nursing program

You are stirring these ppl so wrong! You do not need to get those kinds of classes your first semester especially biology take a math i would say an the rest just easy classes because your still getting a feel of what college is like!! I’m telling you literally if it takes you 2 years to finish your pre reqs so what! It’s only 4 semesters but doing all those hard classes in 1 semester WILL SET YOU UP FOR FAILURE literally everybody i know who took biology the first semester coming in FAILED & are taking it again so unless your the smartest person out here this is a terrible idea & horrible video for new comers smh! & please don’t take your co reqs with your nursing classes that’s another dumb idea just take your time an go at your past & if you finish in 3 years it don’t matter you finished in all honesty the only thing that should take one year is nursing classes pre reqs definitely is about 2 years

Thank you for this😭 I read and hear everyone say they are going to finish it within 2 years which i feel makes me feel left behind and they be taking two sciences in one semester but i think ill take my time and probably finish by my 3rd year and then apply
