This is an easy method to plaque mount antlers using plywood, plaster, and paint. The materials can all be purchased at your local hardware store for less than $25. The final product looks great, and will last for years to come. I've been using this method for a long time, and even the older ones still look like new.
Some guys will even put a light coat of varnish on faded antlers to make them look like new again. This method does work well, so if you've got an old rack that needs touching up, you may want to try that!

Been looking at these DIY Horn videos and I'll be dang if yours isn't the easiest one I have seen to do. No leather, No cloth, etc using skill blades.. Couldn't get any easier by the looks of it other than let someone else do it. Thanks!

Get plywood, drywall screws, jigsaw, plaster of paris, and spend 2 hrs sculpting and painting till you get it to the point that it doesnt look like a 5 yr old made it...or you could spend 17 bucks and get a kit. On a positive note you did a very nice job and the finished product does look really good.

I never found a store bought kit I like or fit well.

Good demonstration JB...I haven't had to worry about this yet because I haven't ever shot anything bigger than a 5 pt years ago...Not many big bucks around here anymore do to all the wolfs and the nasty winters killing off our animals...Maybe this year I can use this video thou...Later bro, Gonzo...

The addition of White Vinegar to the water, then mixed with the Plaster will slow down the setting time of the Plaster.

Sweet video! I was just wondering if you think taping around the base of the antlers when plastering would work or would this make the job look messy afterwords?
@ConsummateSportsman
@ConsummateSportsman 9 лет назад
If done properly, this would be a great idea. Just don't let the tape protrude below the very bottom of the base.

Great work...I am following your steps right now for a buck from this year. Do you have a paper copy of your plaque you can email or link us viewers to?

+Rugelio Ramereiz I don't have one to share. Just sketch one out on some cardboard, then cut it out. It's super easy to do.

+The Consummate Sportsman thanks for the reply. I did sketch one out today, turned out better than I thought. The dimensions just seem much bigger than yours, I'll have to keep working at it.

I'd guess my template is about 6" wide or so.

Do you ever have problems with the plaster coming off of the wood as it dries? If so how do you fix it?
@ConsummateSportsman
@ConsummateSportsman 7 лет назад
+Chris Colvin if done properly, you may see a thin separation between plaster and wood. You can patch with more plaster, caulk, or my preferred method-- a couple coats of paint.

PLEASE HELP! I OBVIOUSLY was NOT thinking when i started :( I am doing a crown mount on my sons Elk he got this year for an X-Mas gift. I used modeling clay (Found idea in a thread before i seen your video, don't recommend..VERY heavy!) and it is all molded on board, looks great BUT!!!! I found a beautiful piece of burly birds-eye maple, sanded, varathaned & NOW HOW DO I MOUNT IT!! The piece of maple is 3" thick! lol..any help & ideas is greatly appreciated. My worry is having to chip away at the now rock hard clay & start over. Maybe a glue? What could take that weight? Lost my husband a few months back & i'm on my own figuring this stuff out...wasn't thinking:( Thanks & great video! Just wish i found it a day sooner! lol

Is the clay firm enough to hold a screw through it? You could try putting screws through the back side of the wood into the clay? Not sure if that'd work or not, but I don't know that glue/epoxy would do the job. Drill a pilot hole before you put the wood screw through it! Good luck! :)

Worked! I drilled pilot holes into back side of wood and drilled screws into the wood that i had covered with clay. Holding firm & will look great when finished. Thanks for the help, Sorry to have disturbed you but i was just so frustrated with myself & needed a clear perspective to figure it out. Thanks again :( Happy Holidays!

This was just a dark brown interior paint with a matte finish from the local hardware store. Nothing special, really.

Either you are single or you have a mighty understanding wife. Boiling a skull smells like death warmed over. I couldn't imaging doing it inside. Also, a pressure washer works great for knocking of the loose flesh after boiling so you don't have to scrape it.
