In this video I show you how to rubber coat or Plasti Dip your tool handles. This is great if you have tools that don't have rubber grips or if the grips are a little worn, you can replace them with this rubberized coating. The great thing about it is if you don't like how it came out or you are not happy with the color, you can peel it off and do it again!

The dip is supposed to be at a "rate" of 1 inch per 5 seconds, not a "period" if 1 inch for 5 seconds. It's the speed at which you slowly dip the entire part, constant movement. And the same rate removing the part. As stated in the comments already as well, pause at the very end and rotate pulling out so that the coating evenly runs around the end of the piece and doesn't drip. Removing the piece at the correct speed will also help with that. Just wanted to share this for those reading for tips to get better results.

What would be the best (or a good) non stock grip to add? Also, can you do multiple "dips" for a thicker coating?

Almost 20 years ago, I had a can of this in my car. I stupidly left it in my car, and one hot NC day, it exploded in my car. It was red. It looked like some kind of murder scene in my car. Don't be like me and leave it in your car when it is hot.

Great video, I have done dozens of handles and chisel tip protectors. Love plastidip, and just a tip, slow the dip in and out, then slowly rotate the item to insure you get no gravity dripping, rotate in all planes. For professional looking finish make the last dip the deepest to make a slim finish to the medal, just for that "touch".

How has the handles held up over the years? I've heard plasti dip is not very durable. I'm trying to find a way to put new grips on hand tools that is as close to the original as possible. Klein or channellock style grips.

good video. personally I like the yellow color as when I work outside and put my tools down on the ground, I can spot them much easier when they are yellow. I love dewalt equipment for being yellow for just that reason. also for drill bits you can then take a sharpie and write the size of the drill bit on the yellow so you can actually see it. also if you rubberize the teeth part of the channel locks its great for a "soft" channel lock for use on stuck plastic knobs or audio conectors/microphones and such that you don't want to scrape up with the metal teeth. I'd go so far as to grind down the teeth of the channel locks and then rubberize it. wire shrink tubing is also good for this as well.

In 2015, I was looking for a way to protect glass water pipes from breaking when I would clumsily bump solid surfaces, create cracks, or not gently put the glass water pipe down. I found Black Plasti Dip at Home Depot and thought I could try it, and could R&R if the results were not effective, or could be better with a 2nd more artistic transition from the rubber base to the glass. Super effective result...😇

It's recommended no to shake it cause it can cause air bubbles ... if you do shake it, let it rest for awhile ... and the "inch every 5 seconds" is correct but don't stop every 5 seconds, do the whole thing in one continuous motion and then repeat on the way out at the same pace ... an "inch every 5 seconds" - great video though!

Any tips on how to cover an object so that the perfect it doesn’t stick. Example I’m trying to use plastic dip on a dog leash with a clip is I want to write below the moving mechanism use plastic dip down to where the rope attaches to the clip but I don’t want plastic dip like I said up the very end of the clip where the moving parts are I wanted to dip it down in the can. Do you think taking like painters tape and wrapping that area and then dipping it would work ? You ever tried anything like that trying to use tape on something and then dipping it and then trying to remove the tape?

I wonder if you could dip the end you don't want covered with plastidip in paraffin. Then when you're done, just rub it away. Then clean up with acetone. I would try on a scrap of something before going all in.

What I “might” try is to use the spray version on mason jars, if it’s not too expensive. You might ask why. I am thinking of doing hydroponic vegetable growing indoors. There’s a guy who painted his jars with black chalkboard paint and it looks cool. But, it doesn’t protect the glass. The purpose of painting the jars is not so much for style as it is to block light so algae won’t form inside. But, if I use Plasti Dip, it would also prevent the jars from clanking against one another. It would provide a tougher, thicker coating, than chalkboard paint. Anyway, I’ll think about it as, I’ve already started using chalkboard paint so, I’ve already spent the money.

lower at a RATE of 1 inch per 5 seconds, NOT drop one inch and wait 5 seconds. Instructions also say to remove it at the same rate. And it says to STIR it. Instructions do NOT say to shake it. You end up with a bunch of bubbles in your coating if you shake it. You might want to read the instructions thoroughly next time before doing a video.

Shaking the can causes bubbles. The directions say stir. It's not a martini for James Bond. Insert and remove object at a rate of 1” over 5 seconds. Example: If you wanted the item to be dipped 4 inches....it should take you 20 seconds from the moment you enter the liquid to the stopping point of 4 inches. Then SLOWLY raise the object at the same rate of speed (5 seconds to travel 4 inches=20 seconds). Then you wait 30 minutes before dipping for additional coats. Don't just dunk it in and out and then complain about runs and drips. Done correctly as the directions indicate, you won't have any issues. Sorry to be harsh but demonstration or how-to videos where the user obviously didn't read the directions is bad for everyone. This is a fine product but demos like this would cause lots of folks to not use it.

At 2:50, I think you did not know that your hands are a great source of oil. It's a good idea to put on some gloves during and after cleaning.

Haha probably, they say not to shake it though. Probably so bubbles don't form. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for watching.

Buy 2 cans if you have a lot of long handles to do. The most aggravating thing is the level of dip dropping when you have a few more tool handles to go. Channellock isn't wholly consistent with their grip color, but I think I'm gonna try Grabber Blue (my favorite Ford color) and Blaze Blue on my old ones.

You should flip the tool and don’t let it drip

The most annoying part of this video is that background noise, (I would never call it music), with that monkey going "Oh oh oh, o-o-o-o-o-o oh oh oh oh oh, o-o-o-o-o". 🤯🤯

@@TheFixerHomeRepair It appeared, by the method you used, you did not read and interpret the instructions as they were written. Sorry to be harsh.

Kept watching again. Got the mixing right finally, but that's not why it was so thin. It was thin because you dropped it all in at once and waited five seconds. That's why it dripped and left the strings as well. If you did it an inch every 5 seconds and pulled it out the same way that wouldn't happen. Use your common sense. COME ON BROTHER.
