In this video Danny Maude shows you how to play those tricky greenside chip shots. You know the ones. You've just missed the green and found your ball nestled down in the rough.
The flag is tucked close to the edge of the green and you need to get the ball up in the air and stopping quickly. Is it possible from a bad lie?
Yes and in this video Danny shows you 3 simple tips that can make you look like a superstar in front of your friends. The shot looks really impressive but with some practice is surprisingly much easy than it looks...when you know how!!

I think the biggest problem the average golfer has on these short shots is just how much you need to swing the club to get the ball to move a relatively short distance. It just feels like you're going to hit it miles and that anxiety strikes about a millisecond into the down swing and the instinct is to put the brakes on. Hey presto you duff it! Practice and commitment along with sound technique such as this are keys. Good video Danny!

Danny, since this is the start of golf season in 'my part of Canada I am very lucky to have someone who can answer quite a few of my questions. First of all thank you for your teachings, quick responses and in-depth answers, very informative.I have started hitting balls at the range using your guidance, I hit the ball sometimes my best, sometimes below average and sometimes not worth mentioning. My question is how do I establish permanent ball position to develop consistent ball striking? This may be a difficult question to answer without seeing me swing, but hopefully you can give me some guidance.....thank you

Danny your videos are GAMECHANGERS! Two years ago I could not break 110...lost almost a dozen balls every game. I have been watching your videos and practicing (as much as I can...I probably play once or twice a month...golf is EXPENSIVE) and I broke 90 last weekend using your tips. Thowing the clubhead towards the ground and getting that feel changed everything. Now...let's work on breaking 80! I need a video on chipping when the ball is higher than the pin... how do you make that shot without the ball rolling 20 yards pass the hole?!?! I know there is an antigravity chip shot somewhere in your game.

Hey Danny. Nice Video and great expalined as every time from you :-). My Question is, what would you to when your Ball where 2-3 Yards closer to the green and not in this deeper grass where it is easyer to came under the ball. Do you still go with what you show in this video or will you recommend the super simple chip shot you showed us in one of your other videos? I ask because I do often not know what to do, when the green is on a higher plane and my ball is close to it, but not on deep grass. Like the Situation here, when the ball where 2-3 yards closer to the green.

Another great video Danny. Thank you. Do you have one or two tips how you teach your arms to consistently strike the ball first or the ground first at where you want to?. Is this simple a matter of practice and more practice, assuming correct set up? The question assumes there is no problem with the set up.. Is it the watching the spot where you want to hit at all times during the swing? Or would you say.. if one sets up correctly with the correct body Mechanic (ie.back swing, down swing and release) then the club head should make the correct contact where you want to.. Thanks for your comments

I've been working on this particular chip! Here's what I did. I bought a small hula hoop from the local Dollar Store. I am lucky to have a very large back yard area. So, I place the hoop on the ground, then set some balls about 15 to 20 yards away in the grass, which is something like a rough. Now I practice your tips and aim for as close to the hoop as I can get it. The idea is to hit inside the hoop, of course, and the all will bounce and run a bit. Sure make it easy, rather than running to the coarse, and it givs me the practice I need!! Thanks for the brilliant tips!!

I love doing this shot! The thing you have to do is commit to a hard swing down under the ball ,to get it shooting straight up. I practice this shot behind a tall bush in my yard. I place the ball maybe 5 ft away from it. Open the blade, and stance, and give a full swing right down under the ball, and it shoots straight up and over the tree easily. Its scary at first, but you have to commit to it. Ive played with my buddies on the course and if I get an errant shot behind a tree , they think Im screwed. But, when it shoots high over it , and lands softly, their jaws drop and call me a lucky SOB! LOL. Its really fun, and really not hard to do. Its basically what Phil Michelson does when you see that big swing go a short distance.

Hey Danny, obviously with a bunker shot the ball is sat 'on the ground', with this type of shot I find part of the difficulty is deciding how far OFF the ground the ball is being held by the grass, too high and you could end up missing the ball completely!
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 5 лет назад
Absolutely, if the ball is lying above the ground a lot keep your weight evenly balanced across both feet and instead of allowing the head to striking down behind the ball still hit behind the ball but make the impact more shallow

I'd kind of call it neither to be honest. It's one of those rare shots that have a set of principles all to itself. As Danny said it's more of a bunker shot than a chip or a pitch. Don't worry too much about what it's called, follow the advice for this particular situation, practice the technique and learn to trust it.

Hi Danny, love your videos, however my weakest discipline is my putting. Just been to Callaway in Chessington for a full fitting and they have fitted me with an Odyssey fanged putter. The Rogue clubs have cut between 2 and 3 points from my handicap so I now play off 23, but although my putting has improved I am still hitting the ball short, as a left hander Mike at Callaway says my right wrist is breaking through my stroke, he has fitted my putter with a fat grip to try and stop this but I am still three putting on the greens. Any suggestions ? Thanks David Robertson

Would it be different if the same shot had an uphill lie? We get this a lot at our club.

Make sure your alignment is good and then try this simple drill to learn a new feel. Set up two balls inline with one another. one above and one below as you look at them. Address the top ball and then swing and hit the bottom one, it will cure it instantly and give you the feel you need with practice to cure it long term

So do you have to use your arms more than your legs to keep balance vs a flat lie ?

No, you just adjust your set up for the slope

Hi DANNY...WHAT DEGREE WEDGE R U USING IN THIS VIDEO? 54 ?, 56? 58? 60? ....I HAVE EVEN USED A 65 DEGREE WEDGE LATELY, WITHOUT MUCH SUCCESS! DOES THIS TECHNIQUE DIFFER IF YOU ARE...A BIT FURTHER FROM THE GREEN/APRON/FRINGE... BUT STILL IN HEAVIER GRASS JUST OFF THE GREEN ? THANKS U 4 YOUR "REALLY GREAT" INSTRUCTIONAL GOLF VIDEOS. I HAVE WATCHED OTHER PRO's GOLF INSTRUCTION OVER THE LAST 6+ mos AND HAVE PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO JOIN IN ON THERE "PRIVATE COLLECTION" 4 THEIR INSTRUCTION...BUT YOUR VIDEOS ARE "ABSOLUTELY THE BEST"... AND SINCE WATCHING YOU... I HAVE DROPPED ABOUT 8-10 STROKES PER/ROUND (OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS) NOW BY USING YOUR INSTRUCTIONAL TIPS AND CLIPS. ............. THANK YOU MATE! THIS FLOP-TYPE SHOT USE A FAVORITE OF MINE AND REALLY GOOD 4 ME - WHEN I WAS A LOT YOUNGER!. THEN, FOR SOME REASON, I LOST THE TECHNIQUE THAT YOU HAVE HAS BEEN EXPLAINING HERE...NOW I AM READY TO TACKLE IT AGAIN...CHEERS FROM NEW ZEALAND.👍😊⛳⛳⛳

Excellent video again Danny. Many thanks. I notice you don't mention breaking the wrists, but rather encourage a full swing, and aim to use the bounce of the club and make impact about 1" before the ball and then follow through fully. Would you ever use a shorter swing and break the wrists, thus creating a steeper attack at impact to get the same results with the full swing, (as I've seen in other videos), or is this just choice on your part? As Mark Twain said "There's more than one way to skin a cat" Thanks for considering my question and look forward to receiving your thoughts if you can spare the time. Cheers

Greetings Danny, i am probably one of the worst golfers on the planet but i have a Question. You refer to this shot as a chip shot however it looks like the back swing has some hinge on the wrist and goes back further than a chip shot. Is this really a pitch shot ? Thanks.
