"Shanty" by Jonathon Edwards is one of the great modern blues harmonica songs. I love it! Thanks for requesting this harmonica lesson. Playing on a C harmonica in cross-harp, key of G. Here are the harmonica tabs in C:
Slide 1- to 4- 4+ 4-(oi oi oi) 4+ 3-(h) 3-(W) 2-
3-(h) 4- 4+ 4-(oi) 5- 4- 4-4-(h) 3- 2- 2-
4- 4-4-(h) 3-(h) 2- 2- 2- 3-(h) 4+ 4- 4- 4-4-(h) 3-(h) 2- 2-
4- 4+ 5- 5+ 6- 6+ 6- 6+ 5- 5+ 4- 4+ 3- 4+ 4- 4+ 3- 3+
5-4-3- 3+ 2- 2+ 1- 2+ 3+ 3+ 2+ trill: 3-4-
3-(h) 4+ 4-(h) 4-(oi) 5- 4- 4-4-(h) 3- 4+ 4- 4+ 3-(h) 3+ 2- 2+ 1-
And that's Shanty, by Jonathon Edwards! Hope you liked the video. Please like and subscribe, check me out on Facebook.com/lukeclebsch, Twitter @Funkyharp, and if you're enjoying the lessons, I hope you'll consider picking up one of my albums, Breathin', by Playa T. when it drops in 2015, Lord willing. Lol.
Thanks for watching!
Peace,
Luke Clebsch aka Playa T.

Just found this video. Luke I hope you"re still following this old thread. Rarely does anyone grasp the nuances in a lick like you do instead they do a poor half-ass cover. And then to be able to teach it so well. Dude you are amazing! Consider me a disciple.

Right on, Mark. Yeah, the cool thing about doing these videos was getting turned on to amazing songs like this. If you wanna throw me $1.29 you can pre-order my bands next single smarturl.it/passingdays. Thanks for the note, and rock on.

Thanks so much for the great lesson. I've been a guitar player for over 30 years and always fooled around on the harmonica but I've just recently been trying to actually learn how to play. Heard this song for the first time in a long while and realized what a great harmonica song it is. Now I just HAVE to learn it.

@@FunkyHarp on the recording you indicate that the following part is 5-4-3- 3+ 2- 2+ 1- 2+ 3+ 2+ 2- trill: 2-3- but on tab in your comments it's tabbed as 5-4-3- 3+ 2- 2+ 1- 2+ 3+ 3+ 2+ trill: 3-4-

Good lesson. Thanks. I spent a lot of time on this song using a program called "The Amazing Slow Downer," which allows you to listen to any song in your music library at as slow a speed as you prefer without changing the pitch. Cool program.

I nail this on the acoustic but was always kind of butchering it on the harmonica. After watching this, it actually sounds pretty good now. I just need to play it about 400 more times and I'll be good.

...this is what i would refer to as virtuoso harp stuff...and when johathan is not playing harp, he's singing! luke, this was a wonderful vid to watch. with your verbal explanation combined with the tabs, it's going to make this much easier to learn the tune. i don't do much on harp, i'm a hack at it, but it's fun...and this is gonna make me sound like i actually know what i'm doing. at the weekly jam, i can actually say to folks "yeah, i can play a song"...impress them, then leave. Thank You So Much...you keep rockin', teachin' and livin' life to the fullest! again...thank you!

Can you give a reference for this tablature system? Seems like every teacher has their own! I first learned with John Gindick's. This one is new to me. I'd like to get used to one standard style and hopefully the most universally accepted and standardized.

Yeah man - "+" means blow "-" means draw (h) means bend down a half-step (w) means bend down a whole-step. Hope that helps! Happy harping, Truth

Do the notes with (h) mean half note? What does the (W) stand for?
