In this video Guthrie Govan shows you some basics of playing slide guitar in standard tuning. Typically slide guitar is playing in an open tuning, but it is possible, and very interesting, to approach this in standard tuning.

Just bought a little half-length slide for my pinky, for very occasional licks in certain songs just to give the audience a flavour of it. I've never really listened to any slide Blues. Trust Guthrie to know exactly what I needed to set me on my way! Thanks.

Thanks GG! Yeah the middle finger position is the most versatile IMO if you want to mix it up with conventional phrasing. I'm totally new to slide and been contemplating on which finger to use... Middle finger it is!

Two things you said don't do is, Ditch the pick Don't put the slide on the little finger. Watched Dai Pritchard play over a hour of slide Guitar playing last night with Rose Tattoo and he did both of what you said not to. Sounded pretty awesome to me....

Pretty sure he's just giving tips for people beginning to play slide. He says that multiple times: ''if you're new to this, try...'' If you have a ton of experience and you find using a pick works for you, then go for it, but if you are new to slide maybe try experimenting with your approach.

Thanks for the great lesson and explanation of what you're doing. Wonderful playing as usual. But there is one thing that bothers me these days about slide instruction: Duane Allman was not the only guy to ever play slide/bottleneck style guitar. He pioneered that style of single- and two-note, dampened melody and was singlehandedly responsible for the popularity of it. Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth, Warren Haynes, et al, are all great and disciples of this style. But using the slide on the little finger was the way most of the original bottleneck players from the South did it. They did it from necessity, because they had to play not only slide but also chords and runs. They were, in essence, one man bands. If all you have to do is play slide guitar, then the Duane style is the best. It's just not the only style. Putting the slide on your little finger is not a mistake for many people. It's a choice and they do it for a reason. In general, I say whatever you are most comfortable is the right choice. Some do not want or need to go for the highly technical and advanced styles of the modern day masters but love the old school jangle of open tuned, Elmore James and Muddy Waters styled slide guitar. It worked for them and they became legends of The Blues. They did it from necessity, as did the earlier, folk blues artists typified at the top by Robert Johnson, Son House, and Bukka White. The beauty of all these stylings is, as you mentioned, it's most like the human voice expressing emotion. Also the closest to violin sounding music as you get to the highest octaves. No frets to get in the way of that pure, high violin-like tone, especially on those notes that are off the fretboard!

Good job....So what are you using to raise the string level a little? a make-shift device you made yourself, or something you bought. I saw one device online that looked like a capo but it also did not receive very good reviews. Thanks....

I learned slide using the Rory Gallagher method - let it rip using my middle finger - and I still have my other fingers to play bar chords

@@jasonkeith9317 you are correct. He mainly wore it on his pinky, especially when using open tunings and with a brass slide. However when he does the song "secret agent," which is in standard, most videos I've seen of him play it live he wears it on his ring finger and used a glass slide

I hate that damping tech. I like over ringing strings. You have chops, you're a great player. It reminds me of arguments I used to hear between David Tannenbaum and David Russell. Russell loved prepping each finger which amounted to damping technique like you do Tannebaum preferred large free motions and over ringing sounds. I gotta say I prefer the latter.

Me too, I prefer the authentic over ringing style. Don't know why this guy doesn't get a synthaxe or something if he doesn't like the guitars inherent natural sounds. He relies far too much on props such as the rizlas, the hairband etc.
