Slide guitar is zippy, twangy, and classic. On today's episode, you're going to learn how to use a bottleneck slide to bring those classic tones to your acoustic guitar. In 6 easy steps, I'll show you how to hold the slide properly, which tunings to use, and how to make single-string melodies!
Slide guitar is the open sky where the buffalo roam and where the waves lap the shore at sunset. It evokes a different time and place that the all-too-digital world we live in now. I've always been drawn to this sound and I can't wait to share it with you!
When I first started playing slide guitar, I thought that a slide was used for barre chords. Almost like a capo! Little did I know, the slide was for so much more than that.
I personally prefer using lap slides where you can see the fretboard more easily. Bottleneck slides are typically more accessible to players, especially if you are transitioning between playing slide and playing normally.
Slide guitar unlocks new sonic possibilities for your playing. If you are in a guitar rut, I highly recommend you pick up a slide. It will make you see the fretboard in a new way, and have you seeing new patterns and possibilities.
Be sure to watch the video to see my full thoughts on slide material (glass vs. metal vs. ceramic), which tunings to use, and how to properly work your slide!

I am a Banjo player who has picked up an acoustic guitar as well as a resonator guitar and am attempting to tackle playing slide along with continuing to hone my Banjo skill's. I am 60+ and love the challenge and the enjoyment I get out of playing music, Your introduction on slide is very helpful in my quest for being a better musician. Thank you , Best to you Jon M.

Got an old Yamaha early 70's FG-75 a couple of months back. 36.00 at an antique store. Dirty, grimy. Cleaned it up, changed strings, adjusted the truss, Tuners were great shape, Intonation good, but could not get the action as low as I wanted. What the heck. Could use a slide acoustic, so tuned it to Open D, and started with a brass slide. It booms. So then a few months later I find this lesson. Very timely. The dampening/muting behind the strings is a little tough to get right, but it does really help the tone. Thanks Tony. Great lesson.

I just got one from GC. Not nearly as good of a deal but cheap enough. I love it. It sounds awesome in open G with a glass slide.

Tony, Thank you for your lessons. I've putzed around with guitars since the mid seventies, with lulls of inactivity, and then what seemed like breakthroughs. If i had to pick one instrument that helped me play better than i ever have before, it would be the looper pedal. As far as learning from someone.. You, in my estimation are a GREAT teacher. Down to earth, and so easy to follow. I wish i had an instructor like you when i was 20 years old. Here i am at nearly 64, and today i'm tubing my finger and playing slide. Thanks again.

Tony, this is one of the best episodes I've ever seen. It was all instruction, all blues, and it was immersive. I forgot the guitar news you can use and the guitar arsenal of the day, the up coming show, everything. I played the whole show. Took me two hours to get through it. I kept pausing and going back with my slide. How's that for watching for over two years. I'm joining tac. I've learned so much just watching Acoustic Tuesday over the years, its amazing. It all translates directly to the Electric too. Thanks for keeping this free. You Rock.

Tony, thanks for another great Acoustic Tuesday episode. This was one of the best tutorials on slide that I have seen I really enjoyed it. If folks are looking for dobro style slide I suggest checking out Abbie Gartner her videos are great and she is just a lot of fun. Whe it comes to comparing yourself with other guitarists it's the best way I can think of to get discouraged. Way back when I was taking lessons in Sarasota FL. My teacher was great and the store was just such a cool place except for one thing. There was this kid that would show up on the day of my lesson and he could PLAY!!! I'm talking about making the whole store stop what they were doing and listen. For the longest time I would think man I am never going to be that good. But then I decided screw it I love playing the guitar and there will always be someone better. As long as I am making progress and having fun that's all that matters. As it turns out that kid did all right for himself it was Derek Trucks, who knew LOL.

I'd like to comment on Dwight's journey as well. I myself have gone through /and am going through the same thing..I'm 47 years old now, started playing when I was like 13... Unfortunately the guy i was taking lessons from originally became more of a friend than a teacher and we ended up just hanging out and talking mostly. Then sort of life happened. I started messing with girls, drugs, more drugs alcohol and whatever else. I left home & didn't have time for guitar anymore. It really was just that I wasn't happy with my progress, Which had been like 6 years at that point. Anyway, i laid it down for almost 20 years, It just stayed in its case. I never sold it, in fact I still have it. A (vintage Charvel/Jackson) btw. At some point I picked it back up. And I've bought several guitars since, (I just wasn't happy with the 90s style Charvel anymore). Really is the pickups. But I'm still not happy with my progress today. I pick up a different guitar every time I play pretty much, in an effort to keep myself motivated. I keep thinking one of these days that it will just snap. But I'm still not fluent on the fretboard. Point being, I might be 70 years old by the time that happens, but hopefully if I stick with it, if I keep myself interested, someday I'll get to that point...

This is a great post! I’ve played piano for many years, and always loved slide guitar, from the old blues guys in the’30’s/‘40’s, to guys like the Allman Bros. and Joe Walsh. I’ve had a decent acoustic guitar hanging around waiting to be played for years, and got an electric guitar last year, and have been able to pick out melodies fairly easily, because I know what intervals and steps mean to melodies. So I finally got my fingers conditioned pretty well to play steel strings. Anyway, this is great, because I knew about lowering the bass E string to D, but never knew about how the other strings were supposed to be lowered. I’ve been playing blues on piano for a long time, so now I at least know where to start properly, and this is a substantial amount of info. It’s like getting a new toy to play with, only better... and your encouraging advice on practice with an instrument, and clip with Chick Corea,..much appreciated, Thanks!

I love the bottleneck slide instruction, I picked up a slide years ago and was disappointed in the noises it made. It has sat in my case lonely and unused ever since. This video has charged me up! Set the guitar for Open-D and get ready to slide away. Will be checking out the skills challenge as well.

Been a bit intimidated by trying slide but obviously like the sound, so my first attempt was Beck's "Loser", and it's been fun. Now this video is a great "formal" introduction with basic technique that I was absolutely not aware of (dampening behind the bottleneck who knew) and some great licks to boot. Thanks!

Great Episode,one thing that I overlooked when I purchased my first Slide is that it has to fit properly.I picked up a well known brand Chrome Slide in Medium a few years ago figuring I would be good to go. It was rather loose fitting on my Ring finger,and forget about it using on the Pinky.Needless to say, that and not having any proper instruction on how to use it led to much frustration.I eventually included it when I sold my Gretsch Boxcar Resonator last year. I was telling my local Luthier about how informative the show was to me earlier this week.He suggested The Rock Slides brand.Says they have a taper to them that allows for a more custom fit and was highly recommended. So next time I am in the store I am going to get one,as my interest in Slide is rekindled now.Thanks for the great tips on getting started with this Tony. Also,I have recently purchased 2 new Guild USA guitars.A M-20 Concert and a D-40 Traditional Dreadnaught.I sold my Martins and Gibsons after getting these two.They are that good IMHO. Suggest you do a show on the new Guild.They are back,and really are a cool Company with tons of history and the new owners have done a great job reviving the Brand. I am a convert. Cheers!!!!

Tōn you must be into symmetry, just like myself. I mean I wouldn't pick the same pictures (tats) or whatever of course. But I like how you've laid your sleeves out... Not to mention that your ink is super dark. I'm guessing they(ur artist) used that new extra dark black. Wicked! Really makes em stand out. I'm guessing you take good care of them as well, though..

Loved this video and all the info. Thanks so much. Unrelated question, do you have thoughts and preferences on acoustic guitar cases? I was gifted a Fender CD-SCE60 Acoustic - Dreadnought Body, but minus a case. At first i was looking into a particular Fender case suited for this guitar with all back ordered pretty much everywhere 6 months- 1 year which is nuts. With that investigating other options. Any thoughts on Gator cases and if positive, do you favor a particular model? Thanks again!

So, I admittedly skipped around so I may have missed it if it was covered, but you should also go over right hand blocking technique. It's kind of like the damping technique with the left hand, but opposite. You should use the parts of your right hand that aren't playing strings to stop the other strings from ringing out while sliding. For instance, play a note on the third (G) or second (B) string and slide up a whole step (2 frets) while only letting the note you've played ring out.

I saw a documentary about Ry Cooder making the music for 'Paris Texas' movie. I didn't know it at the time but I think he used a square-necked Hobro. "The Mississippi Delta was shining like a National Guitar" - is a Hobro used in that track, or in any part of Dire Straits' 'Brothers in Arms' album, featuring a National on the record sleeve? 🤔🤔🤔

Tony. You're great and I have a question. I'm new to resonators and need some help. If you listen to the intro to "Our Town" by Iris DeMent, that's the sound I'm looking for. Is this a roundneck or squareneck? Also, can you suggest a brand for getting that "nasal" tone? BP in Texas.

Love the lesson...dumb question. Will playing slide on my regular guitar cause damage to the frets? Should I only use a resonator?
@Essex626
@Essex626 2 года назад
No, it won't cause damage. A resonator will just have a different sound and more sustain. You're not going to even make contact with the frets when correctly playing slide.
@F350Dually
@F350Dually 2 года назад
Dumb question: Is it unusual for the 12th fret to NOT be aligned where the neck and body meet, as mentioned @12:46 in the video? The 14th fret on my Sterling Resonator Dobro aligns where the neck and body meet, but on your resonator it's at the 12th fret. I sometimes forget that the double-dot fret is the 15th fret on my Dobro and it messes with me. Why are the dots on resonator fretboards designed that way, and not like regular guitars?
@florianniebauer3705
@florianniebauer3705 2 года назад
I think there are 12th fret and 14th fret guitars, or even with cutaways. This doesn‘t mean that one is better or worse. Still with the cutaway or 14th fret you‘re a bit more versatile

Leo Kottke uses a titanium slide; on the other hand, Johnny Winter used a piece of chrome pipe he got from a plumbing supply store that he hacksawed to the correct length: "Crust and rust and sweat has built up in it over the years.....I love it! I don't know how I've been able to keep myself together to not lose this thing! (Laughing)". From an old interview.

HEY EVERYONE, WHAT’S THE GOOD WORD?, I HOPE EVERYONE IS HAVING A BLAST PLAYING THE GUITAR. I HAVE QUESTION ABOUT THE TAYLOR SWIFT MUSIC RIGHTS. FIRST, LET ME SAY THAT , I BELIEVE SINCE SHE MADE THE MUSIC, SHE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHTS TO IT, BUT THATS NOT HOW THE “ LAW “ WORKS. SO HERE IS MY QUESTION AND I DO HOPE I AM WRONG. SINCE TAYLOR CAN NOT GET THE RIGHTS TO HER OWN MUSIC AND AHE IS RE-DOING HER MUSIC, I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THIS WOULD BE CONSIDERED “COPYRIGHT “ ? . I HOPE IT ISN’T BECAUSE SHE CERTAINLY DESERVES THE RIGHTS TO HER MUSIC. THATS ALL I HAVE MY GUITAR PLAYING FRIENDS.HAVE A GREAT DAY.
