How to play Take 5 / Take five on the Saxophone ALTO and TENOR with fingercharts in the video. A SONG AND A LICK episode 5#.
Learn to play take five on the saxophone!
In this video I explain how you can play Take 5 / Take five (by Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond) on the alto and tenor saxophone step by step. Clear fingercharts are included in the video so you can play along easily.
"Take Five" is a jazz piece composed by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out. Recorded at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City on July 1, 1959,[1] fully two years later it became an unlikely one-hit wonder and the biggest-selling jazz single ever.[2] Included in numerous movie and television soundtracks, it still receives significant radio play. "Take Five" was for several years during the early 1960s the theme music for the NBC Today program, the opening bars being played half a dozen times or more each day.
Written in the key of E-flat minor, it is known for its distinctive two-chord[3] piano vamp; catchy blues-scale saxophone melody; inventive, jolting drum solo;[4] and use of the unusual quintuple (5/4) time, from which its name is derived.[5]
Hello Saxophone will have you playing funky and jazzy music on your saxophone in no time! Thousands of individuals from around the world have succesfully thaught themselves to play the sax using this practical, step by step manual.

Also, if you could show the musical notation as well as the fingering that would be just perfect. On screen would be best if there is room, otherwise a pdf link to the notation? Whatever you can do would be great! Thanks )

Just joined band in middle school. I got a saxophone that used to be my brother's from about 5 years ago untouched. He gave me it since he didn't use it anymore and now I'm learning to play saxophone and I'm watching your videos and subscribing. Keep up the good work!

In band we just started actually playing but, I get nervous and can't calm myself down and I feel nauseous and when I have to play I feel lightheaded because I feel like I'm out of breath almost to the point to where I don't want to be in band anymore. At home however, I play normally. Any suggestions?
@bonkone4558
@bonkone4558 9 лет назад
+TheMcCuber work on your breathing a lot, because if you feel light headed in middle school band then you'll just pass out in highschool. Try breathing in for as many counts as you can and then breath out for the same amount of counts you've breathed out and make sure when you breath out all the air is out of your lungs. There's more explained versions of mine on RU-vid.
@HelloSaxophone
@HelloSaxophone 9 лет назад
+TheMcCuber Just give it some time. What I'm hearing it;s mostly your nerves and nothing to do with the saxophone :).

Take Five is also a pun on the common expression “Take Five !” meaning also “ Let’s take a 5 minute break ! Would sound much better if you started on the higher F# because by starting on low bottom C you don’t achieve any comparable tongueing to Desmond’ s composition. The first 45 rpm disc is still the 45 disc with highest number of sales ever !

At 4:20, when Florian begins the third part, (part B to me), though the fingering chart shows it is played in the third register, he actually plays it in the second register. In the first part, at 2:00, the second lead in note is a C without the octave key. At 4:20, the first note is a third register C note with the octave key pressed. Compare the two C's and you will find he plays bothin register two, in both parts. Am I complaining? Not in the least, Florian has showed me a good way to play Take Five. For a novice like me, the third register is rather hard to play. Thanks Florian!

Something is not quite right for the Alto Sax fingering in part 2 (4:21 - 4:31), as every note shown on the alto chart indicates it is in the upper octave, but this does not sound right. Many of the notes should be in the lower octave.

okay I think breaking down each line would be much more effective for teaching, I'm trying to follow along but the second part fo the first phrase was legit played 4 notes and displayed them in a quarter of a second each, like that's not possible to follow even if you say its just a chromatic scale you should have gone down that scale slowly for us so we knew what it would sound like slow so we knew we were playing the right thing to speed up
