Thanks, that was the first thing I noticed about playing worship guitar, that I was playing chords up high with lots of reverb and delay. Just like they do in heaven! Another thing I noticed is that sometimes I don't play at all, which may be the hardest thing for a guitarist to do.
This is a nice refresher video, I haven't got on RU-vid in about 5 years to advance my guitar capabilities. Sometimes you get stagnant with your guitar playing and you lose that muscle/mind (forgetting what you already know) memory of different shapes after not playing them for a long time. This is part of me playing just only acoustic while leading vocals for the last 3-4 years and zero electric/lead. You kind of lose that touch after awhile. Nice touch on the CAGED sequence, for those that don't know, though there is a lot more to learn, but this is about as basic as it gets starting with the E & A shapes. Thanks!
You touched on the D shape towards the end of the lesson, which I also use quite often in our worship team. Another powerful aspect of using these higher pitched chord inversions is the ability to drop in and out of the maj and min lead scales for short fill ins and melodic runs. Lead scales typically lay right on top of the notes within these types of chord. Good lesson, Thx Joe!
u nailed something for me, ive beem playing barre chordes now for 12 months n was looking for more so thks, ill take this and work on it for church times
Good video. I have been teaching guitar since 1987 and my biggest test for my students is for them to be able to play any chord progression in multiple positions at any time also limiting the chords to top three string and low three strings with voice leading from chord to chord
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to discover online christian guitar lessons try Fezervin Teeth System Coach (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my co-worker got great results with it.
Inversion is just a way of saying another way to play a chord. If you write out a diagram of the fretboard from open to 12th fret and write out the locations of each note, and then make a list of chords with the notes that make them up, you will easily be able to create chord inversions and you will also discover how many chords are actually the exact same.
Cool vid man, it's amazing how many worship musicians still get the concept of occupying space. When you have a band of 15 people you can't all play cowboy and power chords. You'd be amazed how many people don't get this.
I use my guitar in worship like in regular rock music: rhytm, solo, pentatonic licks, incl. on clean sound, etc... I write little solos to each song, or use improvisation, so, on my mind, this is more interesting and rich, than standart parties of modern worship songs.
Great tutorial Joe , for some of us that are still learning it will help to see where or what notes or strings you playing, again great video, is there some that's teaches inversion s , hope you make one teaching the chord inversions, God bless.
Thank you so much for making this video! Very informative. I've always used barre chords but I've been learning today the inversions you have shown us. I'm struggling with the chords that start at 9:28. Could you let know the progression, please?
While maintaining the upper register tone chord shapes, the "F" chord shape (as presented) and "B" chord shape (as well) provide a means to accomplish the non-competing tone.
I wouldn't necessarily call these inversions as much as I would call them variations. An inversion is when you take the Major 3rd note of the chord (or minor third) and make that your bass note or making the 5th the bass note that would be an inversion. So instead of "G B D" you have "B D G" and that would be G in its first inversion. However this is a great lesson for those who want to spice up their playing, well done and great teaching!
zach bishop you're completely right! These technically aren't inversions, since most everything in the video is in root position. In lessons that I've taught, using the term "inversion" has helped my students get their heads around the idea. Glad there are guys out there that love theory!
hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover christian guitar video lessons try Ichordo Christian Guitar Fixer ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my m8 got cool results with it. @ zach bishop
Thank you for explaining WHY, but I didn't get HOW to achieve that - I can't see where to put fingers of my left hand... Could you plz add some tabs to description section for example or just here... thanks
What about when u are the only guitar ? I play with the worship group and i sing too , we only have 1 piano 1 bass drums and me with guitar electric :/ can i play regular chords too and mix it with power chords inversions etc?
lve been trying to find a way to explain the rainbow idea of our mix to our band. That's a great analogy, l will definitely try to explain it that way. We have 2 keyboard players who stay basically in the same octaves on the keys for every song. l am as guilty as the next guy with this one, we set up our effects pedal to sound the way we like for a single instrument playing (full of bass). lt sounds great to us, but you put that in a band setting, with a bass guitar or keyboard who loves the lower octaves and you get MUSH. My goal is to sound more like an orchestra does, the bass and drums are alone in those ranges, the guitar and keys play around complimenting each other in the mids and highs. And no one plays the entire song, we have people who are used to playing alone. They play the bass line the melody and fill in didlys. Too much let the others be heard and prefer them to your self.
I'm not sure but ,if anyone else is searching for learn christian guitar online try Worship Fixer Formula ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cousin got great results with it.
Thanks! It's really a lot of fun to play, and it makes transitions super easy because it never goes out of tune! I still need to get a new neck (the original is a Mexican and the frets are garbage) and then it'll really be awesome!
