What was your "lightbulb" moment for this genre? This is a lesson a lot of folks have found helpful; it's about how not playing all the strings gives us better tone: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3p56mLNrR0s.html

Inversions made a huge difference for me as well. It really helped unlock the fret board for me and made sense of the note that fit into the key without literally having to memorize every single note up and down the fret board by wrote memorization. Also, it really helps you to improvise when you have an understanding of inversions and how they help you fit into a mix.

I remember learning “Only King Forever” by Elevation towards the beginning of my worship guitar career, and almost all the parts on that song are inversions. After learning it, something clicked and I started using those inversions all the time. I just kept slowly adding more to my arsenal.

Thank you for your video. This is exactly what I needed. I have started to develop pain in my fretting hand from my current playing style, and poor form. I needed an alternative way of playing that doesn't stretch my hand out like barre chords. This allows me to learn something new and continue to play with less stress to my hand.

Same for me, the aha was triads. I think about it from a CAGED vantage. The most helpful strings to work were the D, G and B strings, because until then I only knew my E and A strings. I would basically play a 1, 5, 6, 4 progression using the group of inversions right next to each other in a zone. This is mentally like a capo - so this zone is like chords in G but just on those 3 strings. Then when I end on the 4 chord, slide that inversion shape to wherever it's the 1 chord (mentally move the capo) and play 1, 5, 6, 4 using those new zone shapes. Again at the end, slide whatever that 4 is to wherever the new 1 is. I did this for hours. I played in all the common keys for weeks, sliding between zones and it gave me so much freedom. In worship, i'll often play a verse in one "zone", then elevate to another for a chorus or whatever. Getting used to muting is the hardest part of this whole thing.

You and I have almost the exact same approach to chord worship chord rhythm! My method is if I am strumming up and down continuously playing 16th notes I use diads, if I am playing some type of quick rhythmic pattern involving a ghost strum I use triads or 3-string chords, and if I strumming only down strokes or just one big ringing strum I use 4 or 5 string chord phrases.
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
That’s a very calculated approach! Awesome. :)

If this helps anyone. Number one and number two are just your E and A string power chords with an added fifth below the root Number one is like if you took a power chord from the E string root (let's say G) GDG And then moved it UP an octave And added a new D BELOW your new power chord shape Inversion two is this same idea but it's an octave up from your A String power chords But fun fact, your A string power chords can also be played in normal position with an extra fifth below them, and it sounds killer Also shape 5 is amazing for swells Root fifth Third Just remember your third changes from major to minor between chords and you can move it all over the neck for swells

Bought the book !! It's only been six months or so since I stumbled on a set of dyads that allow you to cover all chords typically used in worship with just 3 dyads per key. These were D, F and A shapes. I'm hoping from your material I'll learn, among other things, how to actually mute properly and strum since with those dyads I'm just playing two strings, not muting and limited to downstrokes or arpeggio style.

Much easier to understand them if you base them around the chord shape they are based on...for example, your "#1" is based on the D position major chord, just the bottom of it... the "counting up two frets" is counter intuitive and doesn't help one understand why you are playing in a certain position

@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 лет назад
Hey there. That’s not the point I was trying to make, but you’re absolutely right: if you lower the 3rd of a major chord by one half step, the result is the minor version of that chord. That’s an Absolute truth. All the time. :)
