Knowing how deep the water is when fishing is vital in catching more fish. Plumbing the depth of water seems to be an easy job, but there are hidden aspects that can effect your float rig and bait presentation. In this film I will explain an accurate method of measuring how deep the water is allowing better bait presentation.

This is a great skill that many anglers should learn, but sadly are not taught. Sometimes finding a sudden dip/hole in the lake bed, can really make your day on the lake! I find shoals of fish like to congregate in them.

Good afternoon :) Thanks a lot for video, the same as always - informative, , no "water", and exactly to point! It seems to me can be good ( in next videos) demonstrate some aspects how to recognize, what to do in case if bait and hook are "sucked" by bottom slop. How to avoid the relatively heavy bait to became deep in to the bottom slop, how to recognize, act, when need to fish with some weeds on the bottom. IMHO. BRGDS Mark

Does the hook sink or float up as I thought when you put the hook in the water it forms a 'J' shape when the weight ends?

When trotting a river would you try and plumb the depth or is there a better way to judge the depth in moving water
@AmateurAngling
@AmateurAngling 6 лет назад
You can plumb a river in the similar way as a lake to find any deep holes, but you also need to find level areas good for trotting. Deepening the float rig until it catches the bottom is good if you already know the swim is reasonably flat. Use both methods to effectively map the river bed. I plan to make a film on plumbing a river later in the year. Thanks for your question, best of luck.

Easy to understand, great advices. Thanks a lot for a great video. :-) but wouldn't it be easier to perfectly plumb the depth with putting a maybe a ssg shot onto the hook instead of the plummet? You don't sink so much into muddy grounds and the hook will be perfectly on the ground,maybe better for adjusting the bait close above the ground; no offense to your method though, i do the same method myself :)
@AmateurAngling
@AmateurAngling 6 лет назад
To plumb a large area I find it quicker with a plummet, but you are quite right, a swan shot can be used to fine tune the starting depth. Ultimately though, I let the fish decide the working depth of the rig. Thank you for your comment, best of luck.
@hamburgerquieddje3898
@hamburgerquieddje3898 6 лет назад
Amateur Angling you're right, large areas are better and quicker noted with a plummet. I don't get what you mean with you let the fish decide, is it meant as changing the bait height during a session? :-) Kind regards
@AmateurAngling
@AmateurAngling 6 лет назад
That is correct, laying on or presenting the bait just off the bottom, either way you are changing the distance between float and hook. There are of course those times when the fish accept the bait at exact depth. It depends on the species they all have different feeding habits, so keep an open mind when fishing, observe and work out what the fish want.
@stevemccann4166
@stevemccann4166 4 года назад
Wouldnt bother with plumb lead as just as easy to use a swan shot just 3-4” above the hook. Can always move float down 4” at a time to make sure you’re not too deep.

It's easy on a hard bottom. So how do you plumb a deep soft silted bottom.
@AmateurAngling
@AmateurAngling 4 года назад
There is a lake I fish from time to time that has a very silty bottom. I plumb up as normal to find the depth and any significant contours. Then with the float rig set up, I pinch a AAA on to the hook bend and use it as a very light plummet to make any final adjustments. Once you know the lake and know the various depths, you can roughly setup your rig and go straight for the AAA on the hook to plumb up. A heavy plummet may only be needed while you map the lake. Best of luck.

I like fishing the 'lift method' it is a good way to float fish if you are struggling to plumb the swim too.Its my ideal method if I am roaming around I find its a bit like ledgering with a surface indication ( the float ) of a bite. I can roam with a really light tackle box in my pocket basic particle baits like maggot/caster/sweetcorn/bread/pellet and a landing net.
@BUSHCRAPPING

lift method?
@rokhnroll
@rokhnroll 6 лет назад
I believe it is an old school/traditional method used to catch tench originally. The float is held on with float bands or quick change float rubber and grippa stops ( what I use ) so it can be slid up and down to increase or decrease the depth then you put a split shot heavier than the weight needed to cock the float about 3-4 inches from the hook usually an SSG will work and that is all the tackle you need, then you set the float when it is cast out to be over depth, this will make the float lay flat on the top of the water, next you reel in the slack to cock the float, once cocked a bite will show the float lift out of the water as the fish picks up the bait and lifts the SSG shot off the bottom. If the float dips under that can be a line bite so I usually count to 2 if its still under I strike on a dipped take but I am looking for the float to rise up or lift. There are a couple of good tutorials on youtube but I recommend fisherman Chris he details this method on one of the Tench videos unless of course Amateur Angling has not got this covered as this channel has excellent content as well. sorry for the wall of text ! hope this helps.

i see i know what you mean. what are the advantages though? than say to a ledger? i see why in some situations this would beat a normal waggler setup. but they will feel the swan shot, a running ledger would be better or am i missing something? i can imagine this would work well 4 perch on lob plus tench asd other coarse fish
@rokhnroll
@rokhnroll 6 лет назад
A running ledger would work fine but you possibly need to set up rod rests and a bobbin or a quiver tip etc I caught a couple of small common carp last weekend on this method and with this method its all about roaming about for me and being a visual indicator, but I have a slight modification I am going to try which is using the float attached with grippa stops and a quick change float rubber with a standard crystal waggler float, a 5g inline olivette on the main line to a buffer bead then hook to nylon from the bead this will allow the fish to take without any resistance, but the float indication I suspect will be a regular dip like you get with a waggler set up and will no longer rise or lift, I like the idea of the lob worm for perch I might have to try that ! I did not mention I use a 1960's Strikeright Ultraflo centerpin reel for this method with a 10ft shakespeare omni specialist rod and a cheap telescopic folding landing net its a real budget setup prob cost about £75 including the 6 lb line and tackle.
@BUSHCRAPPING
@BUSHCRAPPING 6 лет назад
never tried the 'pin. never have much luck with carp at the best o times never mind in winter, what bait were you using? im going piking on deadbaits tomorrow i might set up a second rod with this lift method and worm and in theory could catch almost anything. thanks for the tips

What to do if the depth is 15 feet plus ? How can I cast with 15+ feet of line hanging out of the tip ring of the rod?
