@@josearellano3268 well being a fighter he’s probably broken his hand before. I had a boxer fracture in my 5th metacarpal. So my pinky kinda does the same thing. Can’t close it all the way unless I make a tight fist.
I wish he'd do it in real time at the end of the video a few times. The technique is all well and good but we need to see it in practice too. Multiple times.
Boxing is definitely an art that is tough to master, but my favorite part about it is how unique each person is. I always tell people if you want to see a person's real habits and tendencies, watch them fight/learn how to fight. How you move and react says a lot about the way you think.
@@emanueletorregrossa4218 personal preference really. Knuckles sideways is definitely better in close range, it’s also safer because having your knuckles pointed up means your more likely to accidentally make contact with thumb and damage it.
@@emanueletorregrossa4218 Its literally personal preference. I like throwing palm down hooks when I'm further away because I'm less likely to jam my wrist if I mess up contact and palm sideways hooks when I'm closer because I find I get a bit more power out of them. You'll likely get a different response from anyone you ask though so just play around with it.
If you do it fast enough you can peirce right through their retinas before they have a chance to react then turn around and run like hell considering they are complete strangers to you. Otherwise you might have to get dirty.
Thumb aiming up or knuckles aiming up when doing a hook? I've seen both recommended by pros. I prefer the thumb up to avoid hitting with my end knuckles
Dudeszzzzzz, you roll it over for the snap/ energy transfer at the end. Hello basic. Also, ball of your foot rotate or to get the hip involved. Your welcome
I was initially trained to have my palm facing me. I think at this point there's no right or wrong way. Just whatever feels better. I feel I can get way more power with my palm facing me. I'm also southpaw...though I'm not sure that makes much difference.
What's your advice on the hand position for the hook? I've always thought the way you have it in this video risks breaking the small knuckles so I've always trained to hook with my hand sideways, that way all 4 knuckles hit flush. Any tips would be cool
Landing hooks with your hand sideways reduces chances of injury in your wrists and hands, you are also able to get a ton more power because youre using your whole body with those shots. When your hand position is like the man in the video it becomes more of an arm workout, but practicing both positions in hooking is good ,whichever’s more comfortable .
Actually your right but the thing is the position of your hand during a hook punch is your own personal preference. For example I prefer to do it the same way this guy is doing it
It's all personal preference. I prefer sideways as it's less force on your shoulder and feels more natural. Some people prefer to use this method if they are throwing a lead left hook so the hook has less of a slapping effect. But yeah it's all personal preference of what works for you.
You don't want to land all 4 knuckles, buddy. Not only does that increase the surface area of the force you deliver(and therefore decrease the overall force of the punch), the bones of your pinky and ring finger in your hand are prone to fractures because the bones are smaller. You should be looking to land only your index and middle finger knuckles.
I was actually taught this by a local boxer who was the IBF Intercontinental Featherweight champ and ranked top 5 in the world at one time. I never truly understood this little gem but I took every word the man gave me as gospel. Until I started sparring more and got it down to 2nd nature I didn’t realize how much of a difference it can truly make.
@@ChristopherSchulte03 majorly! Just thinking about it I need to get a good pair of gloves and try to get back in touch with that guy. He was an amazing and patient guy and great coach/mentor. Hopefully he’s still teaching in the area. Those little things make big impacts!
The confusion part for me is where to put weight when throwing a lead hook , should my weight be in my rear foot or lead foot , because i watched a lot of videos and some say weight on lead foot and others say weight on rear foot
I keep hearing the “hokey pokey” lyrics lol… you put your right foot in, you pull your right foot out. Now you do the homey pokey and turn your hips about…
Overall I agree with you, but it wasn't %100 broken down. Beginner + Intermediate people would fill in the blanks, but people who have no clue, would perform everything in between what he explained.
Thanks for the concise, conprehensive demonstration. I've always had troubles with hooks whenever i took martial arts classes (not for long) and this helps a lot.
very primitive explanation of an awesome weapon in striking. you would think it would come from a boxer or better yet a good coach. there a lot more things taking place at once and setting it up with a jab also shows lack of understanding. the name of the video indicates its actually on the left (lead) hook. in any event, a muay thai fighter is not gonna explain it as well as a real boxer/coach. watch current Roy Jones's coach Tom Yankello together with Roy video on the left hook! once you grasp that, you can do it in any sport involving punching.
👀 I thought he was a thia boxer when i saw the stance. With the feet a bit more square and the way the front leg is better positioned for receiving leg kicks.
I’ve been trying to learn short left hook for the past month. Watching this video twice now my shits rocking thank you 🙏 turned out I wasn’t counter rotating enough
I don’t really see it as that. I think when done full speed the jab may have me hyperaware and looking for what the setup is so if anything I’m going to make it harder to close the distance off the step. If that’s what you mean then I get ya. But if the distance gets closed I don’t think that step is making my ‘spider senses’ tingle for a hook as much as his right hand still being up would 🤷🏻♂️
How do you feel about hand and wrist position for hooks? I think the 2 common schools of thought are palm parallel to the floor, and palm perpendicular to the floor. I know a lot of concern is distribution of the force down the forearm vs centralizing it in the hand. But, I've also had coaches that would preach keeping your wrists slightly bent inward. I assume it's all about your own body mechanics, but I'm curious to see what you think.
Nice tutorial man.. Very good instruction.. Gonna subscribe now.. I've boxed a good bit done some other stuff too and always enjoy seeing things done right or things I may not have known(this being something I knew but is well taught here).. So I welcome more of the same in the future.. God bless you and your loved ones John Heath..👍❤️👍
T-pose tactics is always good for the basics, and obviously the power comes from the hip! The form you carry is like a teacher, balanced and knowing the capacity aswell
I trained mauy Thai for few years and that’s how I jab I have moved to mma and now getting told that it’s correct but when doing the hook ur palm has to face toward you so what you think is there a wrong a right or what?
Like it. But no one really throws palm down hooks anymore. Way more power from thumb up hooks. Mayweather, Loma, Canelo, Tyson, Fury... list goes on and on. All thumb up hooks.
Bro, I threw a left hook in the class in a class fight and broke a guy's nose. Like it literally got violated, the bone in his nose was broken. Bro's father complained to the principal, and......... (Guess the rest )
Why do people stick their fingers out when they aren't hitting something. Like.. Surely that's just teaching your body poor form? Or am I missing something?
Why not do a 1 2 then lean to the side and throw the left hook? Why would you advance forward after throwing a jab and not follow the space you're occupying which is the face, with a right hand? You're just instructing them to walk into a counter. You better be teaching seasoned fighters and not just some novices trying to learn the right tools of the game. Good job. "Coach"
Who you fighting bro? A 3 foot tall guy? Fukn hate that clown stance. You don't wanna see his hook coming? You don't wanna see his head moving? Okay cool.
Yeah, And After you break your pinky From throwing a shitty jab, Make sure that you throw that hook with your smallest knuckle So you break that as well...
Am I the only one here who hates throwin a hook with their hand fully rotated? I don't feel like I can put as much power into it and my wrist feels more compromised, leading to over bending and pain. If I keep my thumbs pointing towards the ceiling, I can land bombs without having to worry about my wrist whatsoever.
Check hook is better, you can't see it coming.. also you can set up the lead hook with a cross, that's why the most common boxing combo is the 123 Jab, lead hook is very strange combo 🤔 Maybe the pinky is what sets it apart?
There is one God, who created Heaven and Earth. He made us in His image and likeness. He made us to worship and we chose to rebel against God. As a result we are seperated from God but God didn’t leave us. Instead God sent His one and only Son, His Son is Jesus. He was born of a virgin and lived a life without sin, though He was tempted in every way as we are. He went on the cross and He willingly took our sins past, present and future. Jesus died in my place for my sins, paying my debt to God and purchasing my salvation. Jesus died but He rose on the third day victory over satan, sin, demons and hell. Jesus tells us to share this story of the Good News and there’s a God that lovingly pursues us. Jesus is coming to judge the living and the dead and those who trust in God will forever be with Him in His Kingdom and those who do not will suffer forever in hell...
It’s hard to find that sweet spot for the right power, form, and distance in your punches. Add too much distance and you’ll loose power. Add too much power you’ll loose form. Too much form and you loose either distance or power. Your lead hook looks great man thanks for the demonstration.
They've been fighting for a year and now there teaching they made fun of karate in highschool now there all about it ? Spared by being oponets with other guys that are like this? Or guys that have poured there tears in this like the fighters I see coming out the hoods in America or Brazil?
That's not how you a left hook if you wanna break your fucking thumb . Dude left out the most important part . You can't throw a hook like he did you'll hurt your hand 90 percent of the time your thumb and wrist will take the impact
Doesn't look fluid. All these pivots. Why throw a jab from way back then walk up to the bag to throw a hook. He got the hook down perfect but all them steps before. Eh to each is own
If your fighting a south paw. Slip left on the right jab and do this lead left. Works like a charm. But you got to read em first. See if they throw a single or double.
That's all great but what do you do when the opponent who is just as good starts throwing fast lefts to the side of the ear whilst I'm getting into position to through the left hook 🙄🙄 this would all need to be done in a split second.... I'll settle for the swift front kick to the nuts and hope it lands sweet 👌🏾
Did these guys ever actually attend a real Martial arts school earlier IN life? How come they don't show respect to the Martial arts By wearing a gee and do they have it as hard as other people getting title shots or in the UFC?
If anyone in comments never done any boxing class and watch this and think it looks easy. Go and do a class you will be gobsmacked how difficult it is to master any boxing
Form correct your hand tho needs rotation for more optimal performance/force the way you had your hand all the force of that punch if you had hit it hard would have done damage to your wrist.
