Will practices exactly what he says here about knowing your limits and resting your voice when needed. During Lorna Shore's Pain Remains II headlining tour, he had one show that for some reason was more brutal on his vocals. He recognized it and decided to take a break from meeting and talking with fans so he could rest his voice and be ready for the next show. I can only imagine how careful he has to be on tour when they have multiple nights of shows before they have a day off. I have a lot of respect for the amount of time he has put into his craft and self care so that we get to enjoy his amazing range of vocals. We can all learn from so much from him. Thank you Chris, for bringing these videos to us!

Cautionary tale: During my teenage years, I was doing vocals in a black metal band (a school friend group). At least I knew to warm up before every rehearsal... but other than that, I never knew what I was doing, I didn't do proper research in advance and I totally did it just by instinct (definitely not using my diaphragm etc) since it was "just for funsies". Some local dudes said my screams and growls sounded great on tape and I showed promise if I kept at it. After half a year I noticed I had these two big lumps behind (or inside?) my jaw and they were quite sore to minor touch. I started having these moments where I totally blew out my voice and couldn't even properly speak the next day during class. Fortunately our band disbanded after a while because later on my school music teacher told me that I could've lost my entire ability to even talk if I kept going like that. To this day, I don't really know what those lumps were, but my guess is some sort of throat / gums bloating kinda situation. As I said, this was years ago when I was a teenager and I fully recovered maybe after a month or so... but I still want to put this out there just in case someone else someday just wants to try and "go at it" without doing some proper research first.

I usually scream throughout an entire day sometimes. If I’m home or even at work. When I’m pressure washing a truck or just waiting for the driver to get back sitting in the cab, I’ll sing Cattle Decapitation and Thy Art Is Murder. I can’t do Lorna Shore, but I haven’t sold my soul yet. And while at home I’ll walk around doing the lowest growl I can get that day, and they go to my cat and say “hey Tiny. Such a good girl, I love you” in a high pitched voice, and then go back to gutturals, take a break for an hour, and then do it again. They’re used to it at this point. Sometimes if I’m just taking a shit, I’ll do random high pitched screams. Im kinda like always warmed up.

The advice of sticking to the basics is the best ever. I was able to do pretty damn good vocals for years, but then I decided that I didn't like my sound. Got obsessed with different bands and vocalists, wanting to exactly imitate them. Doing that I learnt some really bad habits to the point where I can now actually sing, but I can't do vocals anymore like I used to. Like, at all. I can still produce vocals, but they're either bad or I'll lose my voice, whereas before all the experimentation and trying to mimic others it came naturally without any effort (took practice to get there though). Don't be me. Practise, don't hurt yourself, feel free to experiment, but don't force stuff.
@l0stnam312
@l0stnam312 Год назад
Another tip which took me ages to figure out. Find your style and stick to it. I spent way too long hurting myself by trying to sound EXACTLY like certain vocalists and songs. First, recorded songs sound so different to live songs. Second, we're all built differently, so instead of trying to force out tones which you can't hit, find what it comfortable for you :) After I figured that out (and was happy with how i sounded), the amount of pain i felt after practicing basically disappeared.

There are some vocalists with a harsh tone, but not necessarily screaming and screaming. Vocalists like Sully Erna, Chad Gray, Wayne Static, Corey Taylor (at Subliminal Verses). This is very unique and it would be interesting to have a video talking about how to start or what is important to develop this type of characteristic. From my experience the biggest game changer for me was going to a vocal coach after a year of practicing screaming alone. Even if they only teach you clean vocals, it will be a tremendous help since you learn how to sing from your diaphragm, having proper placement with your voice, how to project efficiently without pushing too much, etc. So yeah, please get a vocal coach.

Outstanding point about the natural progression. I was very aware of what the sensation should be after adding the tuvan throat singing, but couldn't seem to let it go properly. I couldn't make the mind body connection. Fast forward where I kept at it exactly how is taught and related here, and doing phrases with that technique led to my body naturally allowing the transition from tuvan into guttural. It took a could months frankly. I was already good at fry, but this also made my fry and my range better over time without trying to make that happen. All because the single warm up video helped level up my vocals. Thanks, guys. You've helped immensely. Shout out to David Benites, too.

I was in high school when I first started trying. Took me about three years too get to the sound I was pleased with. Did vocals for a few bands and some one offs. Then there was about a 10 year or more gap of nothing. I’m 35 now working my way back in to it. Two years of practice and I’m maybe half to what I use to be. The old vocal cords aren’t like they use to be. Before, I just got it. Learned by trial and error. Now I’m having to work harder with technique.

Great stuff from a great channel. Will's warm up course was an eye opener for me. I've tried screaming here and there and I have this high pitched sound nailed down that sounds ok (not great) and it doesn't hurt at all, but I think it's done with a different technique. Tried the warm up course, sounded like shit and was pretty beat after I tried to learn everything, but stopped right after I started to feel a bit too sore. Did the cooldown and now everything is fine and I learned so much about how everything should feel and how the different parts work with that style. Now the only thing to do is to know if I'm doing everything right and how to sound better in the long run.

I was literally just thinking “so basically the same approach I take to weight lifting” when they were talking about taking breaks. Progressive overload. Wanna bench 315? Start slow and low. A big part for performing is training your endurance, or being smart about it. Like Will said, taking breaks is important, even when youre actively doing it for longer times. Ive been self training my screams for lets say 3 to 4 years. Its been more on and off, but I learned alot through Parkwaydrive and recently Lorna shore. Ive been recently trying to train fry's but im really not good at it. Been trying to sing along with Architects and Linkin Park songs. When i started out i made my throat hurt quite a couple times, but i usually know when to stop. Its so training intense, so even more Props to Will and Scream vocalists all alike, for being such Pros at it.

Wow, high information content in a short span for those tuned to the details of the craft, n'est pas? My own practices reveal truth in everything said here. It was round 19 years ago I started experimenting with the Tuvan thing, the lower throat distortion along with the vocal folds, architecture of my inner skull and chest not quite as detailed back then. Just 3 years ago thinking I could sing Dio onstage, and succeeded sort of. The practice in private is one thing, the intensity of the stage with live band that feels all your fuck ups and the audience is quite different. Now I can kick up the drone distortion, speaking of the crows are just doing that thing overhead. This is one channel that helped me hone the details after years of singing not quite knowing what I was doing, the anatomy so important! Thanks guys, you rock!

As a 42 year old metal head who learned how to project from theater and transformed that to screams I can easily scream full on for hours still and be able to talk and scream the next day i can say the fundamentals and proper technique are what get you where you want to go. Also being able to completely relax your throat is where those deep gut screams come from.its the high notes that fuck me up. I have annihilated my high end vocals i can only barely hit a middle C but that's what shrieking with your vocal chords while drinking and smoking is no bueno. I envy Will's range its savage as fuck.

I love this guy!!! I never liked Death/ Metal core. In fact my entire life I hated it. But now because of Will Ramos and what an upbeat personality he has. Seams like the nicest guy in the world I am in love with Lorna Shore!!! 😅

Id usually say that "he's so good that made me quit and i haven't try" but there's something in Will's explaining that made me want to give it a try, love his energy i think he should do it very often, im here for Will the youtuber xD

Volume is different for everyone indeed. My bassist thought I was pushing way too hard just comparing with his volume but, we're just completely different!

It’s funny to me how y’all are both super chill ass dudes lol then the vocals are another level lmao

It will definitely take me a while to master or even get close to mastering screaming. I get the concept though.
