The music composition portfolio is by far the most important part of your application for a degree in music composition. This is true for the bachelors, masters, and doctorate programs. Be sure to get ahead of this long before the application deadline for the respective programs you’re applying to.

Thank you for this explanation, it was really helpful. My only fear is that my compositions are a bit rudimentary, mainly for being young and self-taught, but as you said, is about the potential. I will apply soon, and let us see how it will turn out. Also, I attended to the performance of Mesahid in Paris, I really enjoyed your use of microtonality with the orchestra and the piano!

Wow small world! Yes it is about small steps along the way. It’s taken me 15 years to get to where I am now. So it takes time but if you love what you do, the time flies. Good luck to you and that’s crazy that you heard Meshahid live!

I'm thinking of applying for film scoring at Berklee and I have a few questions: 1. Do all my pieces have to film score pieces or can I submit film score pieces as well as songs and regular instrumental compositions to show my songwriting capability? 2. Do you suggest the use of MIDI and DAWs to create a realistic sound for the compositions? 3. Do my film score pieces have to have visuals?

You mention potential as the benchmark used by composition programs in their admissions process. However, with such an array of compositional styles, I was wondering if you could go into a bit more detail as to what exactly schools reckon potential to look like. (I will be applying to masters programs)

It’s hard to say if one doesn’t know what programs you’re applying to, but take a listen to music by current or recently graduated composers from places you’re applying to for an idea of this. That’s what I did at least before applying to various places. Thanks for your comment!

Where do you start if you play by ear and you want to take your music to another level by going to college to get a foundation in composition. I want to become a film producer but know that I need to have those skills under my belt to work at a high level.

Honestly everything these days are online to study from, so much better than when I was starting 15-20 years ago...whether it's music theory, learning cubase, studying scores, etc. If you're studying on your own to prepare for college obviously it takes a lot of discipline. Otherwise a good teacher can help guide you on what gaps you have in your knowledge, and keep you accountable. Hope that helps!

Hey Saad, I'm having an issue. I just noticed the requirements for a university I'm applying to are requesting for a portfolio as well as the compositions I want to submit so I'm kinda confused 😅 Any help?

@@saadhaddadmusic What I meant to say is that, as part of the requirement, the school is requesting a portfolio and my compositions. I was thinking they were the same thing but it seems they're 2 different things. I have my compositions available but I have no idea how to go about the portfolio. I'm wondering if it's a website or pdf ?

@@sentimentalescalade6451 probably they mean your audio recordings and PDF files, but typically when I hear the word "portfolio" that means both. Strange that they differentiate those words. Email them and ask just to be sure. Good luck!
