I recently spoke with Dr. Jess Gwin, a renowned expert in nutritional sciences, where we explored the critical role protein and essential amino acids play in our health, debunking myths and providing actionable advice.
This conversation dives into the question of whether you can get all the essential amino acids you need from a plant-based diet. We explore strategies to overcome potential deficiencies while following a plant-based lifestyle.
We also explore a new concept for evaluating protein quality: the essential amino acid density score. This score considers the amount of essential amino acids relative to the calorie content of a food, helping you choose protein-rich options.
The episode goes beyond just protein, highlighting the importance of a balanced diet for optimal health. We discuss other vital nutrients like B12, zinc, and creatine, often found alongside high-quality proteins.
I hope you love this conversation as much as I did. Let’s hear your feedback in the comments!

Wow 17 years vegan now and I learn that I need a nutritional professional. How did I make it this far?

Wow…17 years on a suboptimal diet is impressive. I know people who have smoked way longer than that and are still around too 😜

@tomkoss07 suboptimal diet lol. Using fancy words doesn't make it true. A wholefoods plantbased diet that's properly managed is scientifically the most optimal diet for modern humans.

I spent many years as Vegetarian before going Rawfood for several years and always felt bloated until I went Keto a few years ago immediately lost my gut in just a few weeks and never bloated

I think we are still learning, and our food supply keeps changing. We are all human, but we are also individuals with individual needs. Optimal would equate to personal health and well-being maintenance and personal testing. Even a personal, perfectly balanced diet that is exposed to pesticides and heavy metals will cause harm in the long run. You also can not rule out the environment you live in. Everything else being optimal. You can still be exposed to hazards that will affect your overall health. If you lived somewhere where the water was pure, the air was pure, and the food chain was pure. Then you ate a perfectly balanced individualized diet that gave your body everything needed, and you spent just the perfect amount of time in the sun naturally exercising every day with minimal stress, and you had personal care professionals available when ever "optimal" was not maintained. You would experience a long, happy, and healthful life. This would change the world we live in so drastically who knows how it would affect our lives? Okay, back to reality. I guess we can strive to work towards this suppossed optimal scenario. Until we realize it was not optimal either. 😊

Hello Dr. Lyon, great work as always! How can I find the info on WW2 rations? I'd love to discuss the importance of protein and how important it has been for our troops. This would be a great key driver for my audience, who tend to be 40+ age demographic when shopping for groceries. Thank you in advance! Keep the excellent info coming...

I'm reading your book and love it! I do have a burning question. I know of someone who had a heart attack and was put on a plant based diet. What are your thoughts on cardiac patients being placed on a plant based diet?

I like this idea of an EAA density score. I’ll go out on a limb and guess a steak 🥩 is above 2.2 😉

Soy protein has all essential amino acids.

From what I understand, most foods have all the essential amino acids, but plant-based whole foods, don't necessarily have enough of certain ones (leucine, lycine & methionine) for optimum health. Plus, plant-based proteins are bound to fiber and not as easily absorbed as animal sources.

@Nizam-pb5kp the estrogen argument has been debunked like a million times. The misinformation against plant based diet and soy is baffling.

I have an idea, don’t be on a plant based diet. Pretty simple
@Eric-fq5wx

Pretty simple idea with one downfall. People who consume animal protein are at a much higher risk of cancer and heart disease. I will stick with my plant based diet that if done properly you will live a long healthy diet. have never felt better than being on plant based diet.

@@Eric-fq5wx Actually that is untrue! Every study that SUGESTESD is purposefully biased to that end! There is in reality no evidence that consuming animal products causes an increase in cancer or heart disease!

@@sarahhagen2051 Yep! I know a lot of them, and I also know that over the years almost 60% of them have had to stop being plant-based as they gradually started having health issues that were directly related to being plant-based! Of the total, there are only about 15% that have not experienced health issues being plant-based the other 25% or so are still convinced that they just need to tweak something in their plant-based diet to fix the issues that they are having! The simple fact that someone has to be so consciously deliberate in their eating should tell you that what you are doing is not a normal diet for a human being!
