My suggestion is to start priming minis by holding them upside down and focusing of the hard to reach areas first. By the time you get those coated adequately, the rest of the model is practically done. This helps reduce the chances of putting down too much primer on the main surfaces and thus fewer drips and runs. Also, my preference for spray primer is duplicolor. The nozzles are super easy on the finger, they spray in a fan shape like a large air brush instead of just blasting out a cone, and you can adjust the nozzle from vertical to horizontal fan. Oh... Another trouble shooting tip: If the texture is grainy, it means you are holding the can too far from the model and all of the solvents are flashing off before the paint hits the model.

I've been trying to impress the value and importance of priming to a good friend of mine who just started 40k and has been playing Bolt Action for quite a while. Most of his Built action models were not printed and they would chip and damage easily. This will be a huge help to him! I learned some stuff too, thankyou Brent!. Great video as always! I love the angle iron idea. You definitely covered almost all of the techniques. There is just one tip I would like to add, which comes from the model car building world. When you use spray primer/paint, you should make each pass in one direction, starting your spray before the model and ending after. The reason for this is that spray cans tend to sputter at the very beginning and end of the depress of the nozzle, which can can give you large droplets. That also keeps you from switching directions in the middle of the model, which can make a heavy coverage in that area. I cover these in a model car restoration video that you might enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6-oYsJA6llg.html

@matthewrayner571
@matthewrayner571 3 года назад
Quick tip for newbies: You don't always have to thin your paint. You aren't looking for "thinned paint", you are actually looking for "thin paint". If paint right out the pot is smooth and won't clog up detail, then you can use that. No need to thin it some more and ruin the opacity. Most paint will need thinning, but keep this in mind. (Also if you ever do wetblending, use the thickest paint you can, applied in thin layers.)

I like this video: First, brush on primer doesn't have to be 'not smooth', if you add a little water. You really don't dilute the effect of the primer and loosen up it's inherent thickness. For high end models, I might use brush on primer and yes, use 2 coats. The stuff dries fast not having all those aerosol chemicals. Second, I find Army Painter colored primer not good...often leaving unsightly dust and bumps behind no matter your care. GW tends to sell paint in a can, so if it doesn't say primer, it isn't. It's super expensive but you do get an actual paint spray and their cans are much improved (for sick amounts of money).

Fantastic video. As a former auto body tech, I tend to push the rattle can limits. I've sprayed in rain, freezing temps, and in the dark... just don't give me wind! Also, great choice in paint. Rustoleum is my absolute favorite, although spraying an automotive primer is marginally better if the model will require sanding afterwards. Less coverage, more fickle, but it won't gum up sandpaper as badly.

30 seconds into this video, and I already have to thank you for saying that you *can,* in fact, paint without a primer layer (it just has a lot of downsides, as you mention). It can be kind of annoying when basically everyone and their dog says you *have* to prime your models as your first step to mini painting... When I physically can't use spray primer because of the fumes, and the only brush-on primer I've ever found was abysmal. If you're just getting started, it's perfectly fine to just coat the mini is a basic brush-on layer of black, or even paint straight on the grey plastic. It may be less durable than a spray-on primer, but usually the worst wear-and-tear you get is a chipped nose or spike or what-have-you. Always do whatever's best for you to get hobbying, rather than not getting started because you can't do it the "right way." :)

Then I like to glaze on my paints. It makes my blending and shading look like I spent way more time and effort on them then I did.

after it's primed, can you leave the mini and come back a month later or should you paint within a week or something?

you can leave it primed but unpainted for as long as you want- my only advice is to store it in a container that keeps it from getting dusty in the meantime! :-)

Primer is meant to be a thicker paint that helps cover scratches etc. The Rustoleum product seems to not be heavy, but other brands may differ. Flat or matte is probably what most people want. Only other thing is to shake the can every couple of passes for better consistency.

This might me a kinda dumb question but if you use those metal bars and magnets will you eventually have to sand some of the paint off the metal to help the magnets hold to the metal? Or do layers of paint not really affect how effective the magnets are?
@GoobertownHobbies
@GoobertownHobbies 3 года назад
Distance definitely matters for magnets, but it'll take several mm of paint buildup before that becomes an issue at all :-)

I have yet to delve into mini painting, I'm mostly "looking" for now and checking on some basics before I go to the shop and get going, eventually. Another great video, Brent. Maybe just personal preference, but I have watched all your videos, and feel like the music you overlay in the earlier videos are part of the channel's identity and match your videos really well. Noticed the change in tunes lately - not to say "don't add new songs", but hope that the old tracks will keep making an appearance too! Look forward to the next vid and the PB upload on Monday :)

I struggled with spray paint primer for a few months into this hobby, as Ireland has an average of 83% humidity. As soon Autumn was in full effect I bought an airbrush & haven't looked back since, it's far more consistent.

Wait, I "can't" use rattle cans indoors? I wish I would have known that, I've been priming, with rattle cans, and base coating my figures that are largely one main color, again with rattle cans, on my basement workbench, when I'm not in the middle of a woodworking project, for about 30+ years now.

I've only seen you paint assembled minis. Have you ever tried painting them before you assemble them? Do you see any advantages or disadvantages?
@fatherdex8174
@fatherdex8174 3 года назад
I think he's talked about this before. There was the episode where he was painting bladeguard vets and mentioned that he completely assembles his minis unless a part is blocking the rest, like the shield on the vet.
@GoobertownHobbies
@GoobertownHobbies 3 года назад
pros and cons to each! In sub-assemblies it's easier to reach certain parts to paint them. But, if you paint them separate, you still need to glue them together without messing anything up. Since I film my paint jobs, I've found that I prefer to keep the models whole or as few pieces as possible so that the viewer has more stuff to look at during the video :-)

@@soundgarden8885 I generally paint before assembly with no major issues. My eyesight isn't the greatest so I find painting details easier before assembly.
@racek87
@racek87 3 года назад
It really depends on the minis. With my skinks I fully assembled them and then painted them. But with my bastilodon I realized if I wanted to paint inside its mouth without too much trouble I needed to do it before assembly. So I covered the areas that would be glued with masking tape and painted. Let's you get good paint detail in hard to reach places. If you're using plastic glue you have to make sure you don't get paint on the parts to be glued.

Really enjoy your content Sir Goob. I’ve delved into the Army Painter box set range (60), after 30 years hiatus. Love if you could possibly focus a video on Army Painter paints for beginners , vids more than you already have as it’s grand and all for people with an unlimited budget or those using V or C paints, there’s just very little content on the army painter range, hopefully the reason isn’t because the paints are subpar. Any road the inter web is a buzz at this rumour that yourself 🏋🏽‍♀️ and Squid 🦑 are going to have a boxing match for a charity. 10 Rounds, winner fights Jake Paul, or 52 Minitures, choice is yours? How would you go about with priming metallics? Are the techniques mostly the same? Would you even want to prime metallics with a spray can? Or would it be better to prime using one of the usual colors and just brush the metallics over it?
@GoobertownHobbies

You can do either way. Priming brown or black and then layering on a metallic is how I often do it, but if you find a can of metallic primer that you like, then that's even better!

If I just want to get rid of layer lines and small imperfections when I 3D print my own minis am I good with a few passes of primer (say, single color being grey) and that’s it, or do I need to seal them with something?
@GoobertownHobbies

That sounds good! Primer will always slightly fill in fine textures, and it's never a bad idea to prime your prints! If you like the look of gray primer you can keep it like that, or keep on painting.
