Lol I laughed, too. I used to groom dogs, and yes, when it came down to my own, I was always putting it off. But, I always had dogs that never needed a lot of brushing and a quick bath, and towel dry did the trick. No scissors, clippers, or fancy cuts. Lol

I use the exact same tools! I just use them differently. I work in sections but I use my comb first. I use the comb to separate the fur to find matts as well. When I find one I use the slicker brush to remove any loose fur. Then I use the matting tool to break up the matt. Then I comb to make sure it's all out. My dog also has some sections that are furrier than others. I do like to keep my dogs fur long but also it gets too thick at times in those areas. So I will use the matting comb to thin out those areas a little bit. I'm sure there's a better tool for this but in the moment the matting tool works perfect. I do not groom my dog often enough, shame on me, so sometimes the matting gets out of control. So far in the 3 years I've had him I have not waited so long as to make my dog uncomfortable but recently the matting was really bad. I literally spent 2 hours last night just on his belly and head. Tonight we start the legs and paws.

Hi thanks for watching. Yes I have had many wheaten and if they aren’t kept short they need a lot of home grooming. Yes grooming at a salon can get pricey but the more work you do at home the less expensive the groom is. A clean dog is a lot easier to brush as well.❤️🐶❤️

Hi there thanks for watching. Basically that is all you need unless you are wanting to clean the pads of the feet…. You will have to invest in a clipper. Also consider buying a pair of thinning shears and shears to tidy the feathering.

@FurryFriendsZone
@FurryFriendsZone 3 года назад
Thank you for your comment!! Yes we can definitely do a video on brushes, thanks for the idea! What breed of dog do you have? That will help me to determine if the furminator will work for your dog or not, as they are really only effective on certain double coated dogs.

Thank you for the video! What would you recommend for a Havanese? I try my best to brush him but he always has to get shaved down :( he has very silky skin it’s beautiful
@FurryFriendsZone
@FurryFriendsZone 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and for your question! Yes a havanese can have the soft silky coat that tends to get matted and it can happen quickly. I suggest you keep on brushing like you are but if you are finding it hard to keep up I would probably keep his coat a little shorter so it’s manageable for you. That way if you get him groomed every 8 weeks the groomer can do the same or then every time he won’t have to be shaved right down. Grooming can get expensive and when they have to get shaved down owners tend to not brush for a number of weeks because there is no hair to brush. The key is finding a length you are happy with that you can manage. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions:)

@FurryFriendsZone 3 года назад
Hi Christina thanks so much for watching and your comment and apologies on the delayed reply! Absolutely you can use a slicker if he is not matted I would probably start with a soft slicker but in the rear area the coat always seems to be more course and may need a medium. Just be careful not to be too aggressive with the brushing to irritate the skin. In the rear area I usually put my hand under the brush so I’m not rubbing on the skin if there are mats. If you have any further questions please ask we are here to help!😊

Thanks girl... any tips for my American Akita to get her double coat out ?
@FurryFriendsZone
@FurryFriendsZone 3 года назад
Hey there! I would recommend to try using a furminator as it is a great option for double coated dogs or you can also try a rack brush as the furminators can be a bit more expensive. In addition to that taking your dog to the groomer twice a year (or more if needed) for a blow out will really help to take out a lot of the undercoat and make less work for you! If you have any additional questions please feel free to send them to use and we are happy to help!

help in getting mats out? my shih tzu has a few areas matting in their leg, and I'm trying to pinch the matt to grab it and brush but apparently its still hurting my dog. his back and arms/armpits dont have any, so my only problem is his legs, tail and belly
@FurryFriendsZone
@FurryFriendsZone 2 года назад
Hello! Thanks for watching and commenting. You can try and split the hair with a matt splitter but if the matts are too close to the skin then you will not be able to use that and would have to shave the matts out. It will also hurt your dogs skin more if they are close tot he skin and you try brushing them out so sometimes it is easier to just shave and start over and then keep up with the brushing moving forward. Hope that helps! If you have any other questions please let me know!

Hi thanks for watching. I would definitely try getting a muzzle and see if that helps. Sometimes muzzles also calm dogs but they can also go the other way. Try it and see how it goes. I’m sure it can be returned if it’s not a success. Also try sitting the dog up on something and not do it on the floor or sofa where the dog feels too comfortable Hope these help!🥰

What type of brush and comb do you use in the video
@FurryFriendsZone
@FurryFriendsZone 2 года назад
Hi Heather! Unfortunately I haven't been able to find this specific slicker brush anymore. They are quite inexpensive but slicker brushes are all very similar if you are using the same hardness of the bristles. They come in soft, medium and hard bristles. The one I was using in the video was between medium/hard. If you have any other questions please let us know!

@FurryFriendsZone

Thanks so much for commenting! Here are a couple suggestions that may help. 1- You can try having someone assist you when you are brushing and have the other person give your dog treats to distract the dog and praise them for being good. 2- Try putting your dog higher up like on your counter or even on top of your washer/dryer and you can buy a suction noose that can go on your wall that you could attached the dog to which will help to ensure they are secure. 3- Try brushing your dog when they are more calm and tired (usually at night). You may have to split it up over a number of days by doing a little bit at a time. Giving treats after the brushing also will help as your dog will learn that they get a reward after being brushed if they are good. Hope these suggestions helped! If you have any other questions just let us know :)

You cannot let a Wheaten get matted. They don’t tolerate it. I bathe , dry and brush my Afghan hound every week. Yes. Every week. Not every month. Not every 6-8 weeks. If you want a long pretty coat you gotta do that yourself. You need a grooming table, a grooming loop, a slicker and a pin brush , a dog dryer, good shampoo and conditioner and a whole heck ton of patience and about 1-2 hours a week depending on the breed of dog. I’ve been a groomer for 23 years. Every week guys.

Our dog growls at me when i try to do this 😓
@FurryFriendsZone
@FurryFriendsZone 3 года назад
Hi There! Thanks for commenting. This can be a common issue when owners try to brush their dog at home. When brushing correctly it shouldn't hurt them so shouldn't be why they are growling. I would recommend using lots of treats and praising your dog as you try brushing. You may also want to break up the brushing over a few days and make it a positive experience. Also I would start with brushing an area that wouldn't bother your dog as much like their body instead of their head or feet as those are more sensitive areas. I hope those tips help! If you have any questions please let us know :)
