Think you know how to properly button a suit jacket? I've seen a lot of guys get this wrong. In fact, it's a common rookie suit mistake. In this short video, I'm showing you the proper way to button three common suit jackets--the two-button jacket, the three roll two jacket, and the double-breasted jacket. Enjoy!

The jacket is cut in a way that it will look better if you don't fasten the lower button. It dates back to it's invention when horse riding was common and you couldn't ride with all the buttons fastened.

Decades ago, John T. Molloy ("Dress for Success") did an experiment. It went something like this. Molloy had a man dressed in different types of suits walk up to the door of a hotel just as another man walked up to the door to see if he would stand aside and let Molloy's man go first. Molloy found that a man dressed in a navy suit, white shirt and maroon tie would cause most men to stand back and let him go through first. About that time I was going on my first job interviews. I wore a pinstripe navy suit, white shirt and maroon tie. One secretary offered "I like your suit". I went on seven interviews and got five job offers. That is why I watch this channel.

thats actually very fascinating. makes me think about how we subconsciously think in our cultures society. maybe those colors together represent power in our minds because of say superman and how he wears blue and red. or maybe like how politicians wear blue and red suits. im definitely going to look into that some more.

Your anecdotal evidence is incredibly persuasive. I'm mean, if your social skills are terrible, you're not very clever and you have an awful CV then maybe it's starting to look more slightly more persuasive but if you're a smart guy with even a little charisma and some experience then... I'd have a few more questions about the experimental design of the Molloy "experiment" as well tbh.

Excellent help. Details make the difference. One glance at an improperly buttoned jacket can kill your image of competence. People think that if you can't button your jacket correctly, how can they trust you to manage a project, manage a department, manage their money. Research shows that flyers judge how well an airline maintains its engines by how clean it keeps its cabins. Also, learn when to button your jacket and when to unbutton your jacket.

Great content, very useful, especially for beginners. I think it's interesting to point out that some of those rules (or better, style habits) vary from country to country, as their "style culture" does. For example, on 6x2 double breasted jacket, you'll more likely find both buttons buttoned in England, while here in Italy we prefer the more relaxed look with just the top one buttoned. We also barely ever close the top button on a 3 roll 2 SB jacket. All the best, keep up the great content.

We as a modern society need to use the bottom button again. It's ridiculous that we still take fashion advice from a king who died over 100 years and was too obese to properly button his jacket.

Nobody take advices, but this guy, is good to share the rules of suits, basic one, i even looked to learn them too, but i honestly just wear it as i like, often my shirts won't come out of jacket, so i just don't care how many peoples will be bothered by it, it fit me good is what matter, don't let anyone guide your apperance. Plus the button rule is explained, idk why he say "never" i even saw rich peoples and famous one that have all buttons buttoned up and down. We don't ride horses, and we don't have that big of belly to not be able to button the last one, but if you have big belly it might help you to unbutton the low button, and also when sitting down. Remember dress as you like, those are just basic rules and you don't have to follow them, if you feel confident, then the suit will look extremly good on you.

I know buttoning the bottom button looks wrong because the way suits are tailored. Simple fix: tell your tailor to tailor your jacket so it looks best when fully buttoned! How did no one think of this?

Is a rule made by someone who had too much time in their hands and a way to bully others ;), is like insulting someone for not wearing same shoes as yours. Let peoples live, is good to know those basic rules, but following them is annoying, i mostly just dress how i want, and i don't respect the rules, it make me stand out, i'll respect the rules when everyone break them, then i will again stand out, lol.@@mrfragezeichen7734

Well the reason I do the bottom one too is, because if I did the top button rule I would look weird. Because my shirt is visible tucked in. And I think both buttoned looks better not gonna lie.

I sometimes (oftentimes) button both buttons when it's windy outside so that the wind doesn't lift the sides of the jacket… doesn't look that bad imo.

Is to be closed but when you sit down, you might need to unbutton because it will be too tight, or if you got big belly, there are suit jackets with one button if you want aesthetic as the guy said down on the coments, honestly even the side buttons on the jacket under arm, are quite non sense for suits, because there are sometimes 1, 2, 3, 4 and it used to mean if is made in industrial, or tailored, and be a signature for designers, but now is just a mix of all lol, i have some suits that are more sport-ish, and have no buttons down on the arm, and i have to say is cooler, because i don't get my hand stuck in everything.

typically Button up would be the verb. but a lot of the time it wont be used as a verb such as. Im Doing up my button.

They way they are tailored is to leave the bottom unbuttoned. It changes the drape when you button the bottom. It also goes back to tradition.Edward the VII left the bottom of his vest unbuttoned. Some say due to his weight. But a lot of suit and waistcoat/vest traditions started with him. Some also say it is from the days of horse. The bottom button was left undone for ease of riding.

The way the two front sides of a single-breasted jacket are tailored, the fabric is not cut to hang in a straight line, but along a curve. Buttoning the bottom one pulls the two pieces too close together, and ruins the shape of the jacket. It's just not cut to be worn that way. Start to look at the treatment different single-breasted jacket styles, you'll notice how the lower 'flaps' there is a wide range in the styles, from "open" to "closed", a significant range of curve to the front panel. Different tailors, and even country regions are known for their style of cut. Naples in Italy is recognized for a very open bottom of the jacket front.

I think it started when King Edward VII, being quite rotund, didn't button the lower button on his jackets. Others followed this practice. JFK in contrast did button the lower button but mostly because he wanted to conceal a back brace that could be seen through his shirt. But yes, as a result it looks wrong in contemporary context. If it's really windy or something I think its fine to button it for a temporary amount of time as function may outweigh style. Or just get a jacket tailored with 1 button and avoid the whole thing.

I fight hard against the 'rule' not to button the bottom of a 2 button or 3/2 button suit. As proof I refer to fashion plates of the 1920's & 30's, where it was perfectly acceptable to fasten all of the buttons. I get my suits made specifically to button all when I want to. So the "won't sit right" argument is moot. And I don't feel the need to follow the rules of a fat king from the 1800's British Empire.

King Edward VII was very fat and couldn't button his jackets up all the way so everyone copied the King as they often did and it became a new trend that eventually became ubiquitous. It's kinda stupid but that's how style and fashion usually works. You do get one button jackets that can look pretty good as well.

Is to be buttoned if you want too, if not then you can just respect the rule, the sleeves buttons are a different kind ,because those buttons are not here to be closed which is aeshtetic purpose. But the jacket front one has a hole, and a button, so it is not for aesthetic, is just a rule made by a guy 1010100101 years ago, that wanted to bully otheres who we're thiner.@@Am_b0b

The reason not to do the lower button is actually only for when you sit down. Putting your hands in your pockets (pants/trousers) only works if the jacket is undone and you push the jacket aside; NEVER lift the side of your jacket to put your hands in your pocket. Ideally, one hand only.

Everybody curious why don't button low button. Style experts always told us no on it. But of course it's there on purpose. My guess is that you button lowest button on jacket when you put on long heavy coat so pallets jacket underneath coat wouldn't roll up under the coat or give discomfort other ways.

As much as I agree with this etiquette I do find it odd that jackets have buttons that aren't supposed to be buttoned. I find buttons rather unsightly and find suit jackets with a single button much more simple and classy

The story goes that King Edward VII grew quite the belly and couldn't fasten his bottom button anymore, and since fashion generally goes from the top down society-wise, people started to do it. Now single-breasted suits are cut in a way that would ruin the drape if you did, but this isn't the case for the double breasted suit.

@@DemetriosLevi On a double breasted coat, long and short, with two or more buttons that can be buttoned, buttoning the bottom button that can be buttoned is optional when standing up. When sitting down, that button is to always be unbuttoned. However, when two or more buttons can be buttoned, all other buttons that can be buttoned are to be buttoned at all times. When only one button on a long or short double breasted coat can be buttoned, that button is buttoned at all times.

That’s why I much prefer a one button single breasted coat, long and short, when such a coat is low cut. This way, no button to be buttoned goes to waste.

It's a convention that started in the early 1900s because King Edward VII was too fat to button the bottom button and everyone copied him. Plus it just looks more right and that's how suits are tailored in the modern day.

The bottom button is to be buttoned when cycling :) to prevent your suit from flapping like you're a duck trying to take flight. A time and place for everything.
