Hey y’all! To get the best-tasting greens, you’ve got to start off right by thoroughly cleaning those bad boys! Follow along as I show you how.
The first, most important step: Clean your sink y’all! Add the unpackaged greens to the sink, and fill it with COOL water. Using your fingers, gently scrub the leaves. Drain the water and repeat the steps until the water is clear and free from grit and dirt. Your greens are clean! The simplest way to chop them is to stack a few leaves, roll them up and slice. Now you're ready to cook your grit-free greens!
Check out some of these popular greens recipes I have on my blog:

That's how my mom cleans her greens. That's a great method as well.. I use salt sometimes. Cool comment!

thanks for showing the correct old-fashioned way to clean greens - whether or not the bag states them as clean. this is the same way my mom used to clean the greens and how i do also. i didn't know about never washing them in hot water though. the cold is too much sometimes though gloves will help. and YES, for us sometimes lazy in-a-hurry folks, be sure to wash your sink out BEFORE placing your greens to wash. only obvious, but...

I use lukewarm water to help loosen any stubborn soil on them with vinger in it to. Then i clean each leaf front and back with a long handle soft veggie brush. Rinse twice and then roll an just tear into sections. I strip the end stem of any leaves and thrown the stem away.

Great video. I use apple cider vinegar vs salt and a pinch of detergent. Then wash each leaf gently but when I cut I leave the stem bc of the nutrients then add chicken broth in the instant pot to pressure cook them. Save money on electricity w same great flavor. I do collards or kale alone. Love thos video

I FIND THAT CUTTING THE LEAVES, LETTING THEM SIT FOR A BIT THEN USING VINEGAR AND COLD WATER, WHILE USING BOTH OF MY HAND LIKE A WASHING TURN STYLE SEVERAL TIMES, MAKES THEM CLEAN AS WELL!

Rosie, I hate to sound so ignorant, but what type of "greens" do I use? When I go to the store, there are collard greens, mustard greens, etc., then there is chard and other big leafy things. Which is best flavored?

I don't think that you're question is ignorant at all. I personally prefer collard greens. I grew up on all mustards, turnips, and ect. My mom mixed greens instead of making one type. I guess I grew to love collards. I would suggest trying them all, and you can pick your favorite. What I like, you may not :-) .

USE DETERGENT BCUZ PRODUCE IS GROWN W ANIMAL FECES /MANURE
@Jaymo_Class5
@Jaymo_Class5 5 лет назад
Thank God someone finally said it. Greens should always be cleaned with a little dish detergent and cold water. Then continue to rinse as you normally do until the water is clear and clean. Neither salt or vinegar kill off the bacteria e-coli or Listeria that comes from animal feces. Before someone tries to say the greens will taste like sosp....your wrong. Does your water taste like soap when you drink out of a glass that you washed with dish detergent? No! It is a nontoxic way to clean your vegetables and kill off bacteria. Been doing it for 25 years and and I teach everyone to clean greens this way.
