In this video I go over how and what to fuse when setting up and installing your car audio system. Remember the golden rule.... always fuse within 18” from every power reserve and always fuse to protect the wire.
@@NextLevelCarAudio good evening sir I was wondering if you could help me out. I have a 400 mechman alt. And 2 audio pipes amplifier 2000 watts a piece an I was wondering what XS power battery should I get.
Rebuilding a bad build and this simplified my build, was about to spend a ton on fuse distribution blocks and what not even for the DSP. Now i have a better understanding and just know to check often.
Super in depth detailed to the point just awsome vids and I've only seen 2 vids and for years now alot of people have been telling im fusing it wrong had me second gusing myself but I've used wiring/fusing method sene I was 16 that method right there good vids keep them coming im going to keep watching
WOW, I was today years old when I learned this!!!!! Fuse based on gauge of wire (2/0 in my case = 400amp) and not based on Alternator (190 amp = 200 amp fuse). Thank you...
@@AKEYFACTOR oh and I've seen a lot of those Bobby gately enclosures. Those things are beast and just so nicely done to be by hand... love seeing craftsmanship like that!
@@NextLevelCarAudio hey can you link those metal things that you have on your fuse panel so if the wire pops out that extra protection. I've looked and cannot find them and don't know what they're called. Thank you in advance loving the channel great info! 🙏
Just curious if you could make a video explaining how to connect an rca adapter line out converter to a stock radio. My car doesn’t have the rca line outs and the amp im using only has those as an input. Love your videos by the way. The way you explain everything is very thorough and well said.
excellent video on fusing. I'm wanting to install a 250watt rms amp in my 04 chevy express. must the amps power cable be connected directly to the battery? bc the express vans have an AUX fuse box w/ a post I believe is 12VDC AUX under the driver seat I plan to mount amp just behind this seat. also installing new head unit. my OEM radio harness didn't have switched 12VDC was planning to steal switched 12VDC from the climate control tapping it w/ a relay to not overload this circuit. also#2 is it safer to have the fuses closer than 18" if possiable?
Awesome video and straight to the point!! If I do fuse from the 2nd battery to the amplifier, would it be the exact same amperes such as the fuse from the main battery? I have KnuKonceptz 1/0 ga. Thanks!
Question…. What’s the best place to ground 2 batteries in the rear. I have an 09 suburban two Orion 15.2 on a small for now bass 5K from taramps. I have a 320 alt that I’m going to have installed but the installer said that he can install it until I have everything in the back connected… “after he told me he would install it and all I had to do was have runs of 0guage CCA from the hood to the back. So I did that and then he said he can install the alt cause it will fry my battery without the connections to the batteries in the back. So my question is do I drill and ground to the chassis by the spare tire or can I ground elsewhere inside rather than the subframe/ chassis?
What if i have a triple alternator setup 1 for car. 2. For audio. Can i run 2 fused wires directly from alternator to rear battery bank? Similar to your setup minus the caps up-front. More like alternator to lithium or agm bank
So my amp does not have an onboard fuse. Should i put an extra fuse near the amp in this case or is it still ok to just have the one fuse near the battery?
I get absolutely DISGUSTED when I see someone running their amp power wire through the door! My step son, being pretty much a noob at this, was gonna try to install his amp and subs in his truck on his own. He ran the power wire right through the door opening. 🤦🤦 I saw what he did and quite literally made him pull it all out right there on the spot and run the wire correctly. After that, I explained why. I also made sure to stress the importance of fuses and fuse placement. As he did not have a fuse under the hood. Now I do prefer both fusing before the firewall as well as close to the amplifier. Regardless of whether or not you would use a second battery. Just my personal preference. But it also opens up the possibility for expansion(extra battery/amp). With that being said, this is a great explanation as to why fusing and placement is vital to keeping your car/system from going up in the magic smoke.
One thing that’s confusing me. I’m trying to run dual 1/0 gauge. Now to my amp(taramps 5k md) it says the max fuse size is 250a. So if I have two runs going to the amp would each fuse have 100-150a fuses? Or 250a fuses?
What if your amp shorts out your wire is gonna turn to a fuse and start a fire if u dont fuse it there i had a amp do that short circuit and if i didnt have a fuse between my second battery and amp it would of caught fire
Great info bro... Just one question.. I have the Rockford fosgate power TB 4000.1 bd.. and it has 500 amp fuse,, so should I follow the board with 356.25 when I have 2/0 gauge wire..?? I'm just curious, I don't even use that amp any more due to limited space and that amp is huge. .. thank you for teaching us bro.. video liked Ohhh yeahhh..
Hey I had a question about grounding a secondary battery in a trunk? Should I run the ground wire from my under hood battery, and ground the back battery to the chassis?
Nice video, can you make a video that fully talks about dsp processors, I’m thinking of buying one specifically the dm-608 audio control to not buy equalizer or crossover, I have some knowledge about it but not 100%
@@NextLevelCarAudio, did you ever mak a DSP video? If so, will you please provide a link. I searched your videos and did not find it. Maybe I’m overlooking it. Thanks. I’ll be doing my XS Super Cap installation this weekend. Thanks for your help.
I see you answering alot of questions I watched the whole video first I swear lol I'm going to be running 1/0 gauge from my front battery to a rear xs 950 And I honestly just don't get the numbers, I'm currently running 4 gauge with CCA with 2 200 amp fuses What should I run for the single run of 1/0? Love the videos!
@@NextLevelCarAudio thanks man! What issue other then popping a fuse would you run into running 300s? All I can find in store but I'll definitely order some 350s
@@NextLevelCarAudio thanks man! You seem like a hell of guy! In this hobby information is so scattered and most people aren't super willing to spread knowledge like you, I appreciate it!
novice here, why do some amps have onboard fuses while others don't and what do I need to do if my amp does not have onboard fuses? should I just run a single inline fuse 18'' from the battery or will I need some kind of extra fusing further down the line in place of the onboard fuses that I don't have?
Great video - What if a I have my second battery under the hood I know I need to fuse within 18 inhes form the battery but Do I need any fuses on the other side of the fire wal? OR close to the amps ? Thanks
So superbanks are safe underhood as lithium batteries are heat sensitive and can't be under hood and usually get installed in car?. Have they came out with a underhood lithium battery yet thats safe.
From amp to battery. Not necessary unles you want peace of mind or if they run through any potential pinch points or metal. I don’t have my amp power wires fused.
So if I am planning on installing a simple setup of 1/0 GP Audio OFC wire to a Sundown SAEv3 2000D amp which will push 2000w rms, what size fuse should I use? Sundown calls for a 220 amp fuse but I can only find 200 or 250 but the way you explain it in this video, I should install a much higher amp fuse right?
@@NextLevelCarAudio ok sounds great thanks! If Sundown recommends me to run a 220 amp fuse and I run 350 then would I not damage my amp if something were to happen?
Not necessary with my current setup. If I was running an AGM under hood with my lithium’s in the back then yes, I’d isolate or run on separate electrical systems like I did in the past
I noticed everyone mentions "fusing for the wir not the amp". TRUE, but I've never seem anyone not put a fuse near Batt and put it near amp.. or ..wherever else..🤔
Here's an odd and unusual question and you're probably going to ask why do I want to know this but it is for car audio here we go can you use an amplifier to amplify electricity?
What would cause no music coming from car speakers . Speakers are connected to a 4 channel amp and when I turn the key to accessories the protection mode light comes on and off quickly but no power . Fuses at the amp are good. Can it be the amp is bad
I have one 1/0 welding cable and it is rated at 350 amps so if I understood your video correctly I would run a 350 amp fuse within 18 inches from the battery correct? Also my cars factory battery is in the trunk but I have installed a 350 amp High output alternator. Should I fuse the 1/0 cable within 18 inches of the alternator ? and from the batteries in the trunk?
@@NextLevelCarAudio One more question referring to a Big 3 upgrade , I have read that trunk start cars require 1/0 cable from the alternator under the hood back to the battery in the trunk and also require 1/0 cable from the ground under the hood to the negative of the battery in the trunk then from the battery negative to the body of the car? Could I just upgrade the ground under the hood at the to 1/0 cable from the alternator bolt to the body then upgrade the ground in the trunk from the battery(s) to the body with 1/0 cable without having to run a separate run of 1/0 cable from the front to the trunk of the car for the ground?
Thanks for making the videos, I’m about to run a limitless lithium 12k for my 4 Skar VXF 15’s I have 2 Atm batteries under the hood, how much power does 2 Alternators make? How did you run all the O gauge cables to the back? What kind of distribution blocks and fuse holders would you suggest
Well my 2 put out about 850 amps, decent juice :) ran through the firewall, and under carpet. Pain in the ass. But looks clean. Any inline ANL fuse holders are fine :)
Ex.knukoncepts wire max rating is 375 amp@20ft on 1/0 wire which is oversized ,so Its like a 2/0 awg.so running a 400amp fuse would be fine but a max fuse would be 500.so Its ok to run the 500amp fuse instead?
@@NextLevelCarAudio so not to come off topic what would be better running 4 lines of 1/0awg@ 375amps or 2 lines of 4/0awg@675ampsea..or can you run like (2)1/0 lines & 1 line of 4/0000 gauge..my total amp is 1200amps.n I already ordered (2) big 3 upgrades,n order (4) distribution blocks and the 1/0 18" 1/0 awg to connect from 1st batt.n to the 2nd batt. N I was going to get 2 runs of 1/0awg to run between them, but I was told that's not enough, n I should go with 2 runs of 4/0000 rated at 675amps.I dont want to waste what I bought
I only ask because your running multiple lines of 1/0 awg i believe n 4/0 would chop that down to 2 lines per being that amp rating is around 675amps for kolosus 4/0000 awg.
I have a simple build on all my vehicles. Does the fuse give constant current instead of fluctuating while driving. I can set all my amp gains and lift and subsonic filters. Sounds great at idle but when vehicle is moving sounds horrible.....help pls
I upgraded my alternator charging wire to 4ga. But did not use fuse or fusible link. Is this ok? Or do i need one or the other? And if i need a fusible link, what gauge and length should it be at the end of my charging wire.?
@@NextLevelCarAudio word. Would it be possible for me to rent your amd watt meter? The ohms law formula doesn't seem right for where the gain gets set at by voltage. I set the skar rp.2000.1.d to 48 volts to get about 1000rms output to one solobaric, and the gain is sitting about 40%. So either im doing something wrong, or my amp is a beast!
Also when i check the ohms at my subwoofer box i get 4.4 ohms. But i have this dvc 4ohm sub wired in parallel which should be 2ohms right? as seen by the amplifier according to dr. google
But what if I have 2 amps rated at 300 and 180? Power wire from main battery fused at 300, you're saying another 300 before the second battery, wouldn't that make the wire handle 600 amps and not blow? Also should I use my fused distro block before the amps, fused with their rating?
@@NextLevelCarAudio I got it done, shit slams. Only fuse I ended up putting in was before the second battery, and one out to the 180 amp recco with a 200 just for peace of mind.
Ok, so please explain why you would fuse based on the maximum capabilities of your power wire and not your equipment. For example, Lets say you are running 0 AWG wire on a 1700 watt amp. the most that amp would be outputting is around 100 amps or so, but if you fuse based on the wire then you would have a 300 amp fuse based on the chart you shared. So because of this, if the wire ever shorted to ground and created a short circuit, there would be at least 300 amps of current getting sent to the amplifier even if its for a split second until the fuse blows. This amount of current would surely completely fry the amp would it not? Since the amp is only rated to output around 100 amps.
I don’t get it.... you can touch the positive wire coming out of the amp directly to ground and get a spark and that’s it. No further incident. Your not going to damage or blow the amp. You will just discharge the capacitor Bank inside the amp if the wire shorts. However, LPF the actual power wire shorts on the battery side and there is no or improper fuse, then the wire can melt and bath your car on fire. Do your research... the golden rule in car Audio is you fuse for the wire not the amp
@@NextLevelCarAudio ok so I appreciate you replying and trying to clear things up for me. I'm sorry I'm still pretty new to car audio and I'm pretty dumb when it comes to electrician information. So when a wire shorts to ground what exactly is happening as far as current through the wire. What is making it so the wire gets hot enough to melt and start a fire. I was under the impression that it was because a butt ton of current or volts/amps was running through it when this happens. Sorry for the ignorant questions.
The real danger comes from when the power wire shorts and your battery positive gets shorted to your chassis/ground. A typical car battery has enough juice to melt and cause the wire to smoke/catch fire.
Run a couple 1/0 gauge wires to a distro block in the trunk and tap power/ground wires there. Also making sure you run a 1/0 directly to the alt making sure it is fused
Why didnt u put fuses between the lithium batteries and the amps- i mean in the video ur naming some reasons… But i use fuses for unexpected events… What if someone runs in the back of my car and a positive cable from the amp rips out and touches the chassis?
Because In my opinion it’s a waste and not worth it. It is only a couple feet, and almost everyone I roll with in the car Audio scene don’t fuse between amp and rear bank of its close together like my setup. And If someone runs into my hummer they going to die. The thing is a tank.
In my case i have a Chrysler 300. The battery is located in the trunk instead of under the hood. I have a mechman elite 370 with 2 runs of 0gauge for power and 1 run of 0gauge for negative that run thru firewall to my xs power supercap battery which located in trunk spare wheel storage area. Note I did a xs power supercap battery delete like yours. I also have a 2nd shorter ground for my alt which is grounded under the hood is that a good idea or no? I figure more proper grounds the better???? Now my other question/questions are should those long 2 lengths of power off my alt to my xs super cap be fused?? I don't at the moment. But i did fuse the 2 power lengths continuing from the xs super cap to my limitless lithium cyber 12k which is located in the backseat area. I have my backseat completely gutted and built mids and high/ amp / battery racks. I shouldn't have to fuse all the short runs of 0 gauge from 12k limitless to amp/amps right?? Note i have a crescendo bass clef 5500d which have 2 runs of power and ground. I also have a crescendo concerto 1100.4 for mids an highs. I do have a 150 amp fuse for the 4 gauge power cable running off the limitless 12k to the 1100.4 concerto is that correct?? I really would appreciate your advice thanks. MP🔊
Anytime you go through firewall it should definitely be fused. No need to go from bank to amp unless you at going through metal or a punch point. Everything you talked about in your setup sounds good. Should have equal amount of grounds and power. But yeah, sounds legit
@@NextLevelCarAudio Also i have a question in regarding not wanting to change stock headunit because the Chrysler comes with stock flatscreen. I been looking at at a audio control dq-61 dsp. Is that basically like changing out head unit because the dq-61 has a ton of tuning adjustments for mids an highs an tweets. Or do i need to change out my head unit? What is your opinion?
@@NextLevelCarAudio Well yes the only thing stock left is the oem radio. I wanna keep it tho. Soo audio control dq-61 will be good for adjusting my loudspeakers? I will basically have tuning adjustments just like a aftermarket head unit right? Also im sorry i wasn't 100% clear understanding on your other reply. Soo i should be running a fuse off each of the 2 long power runs coming off the alternator positive running thru firewall to back xs cap correct or no?
Yes, that will work for you just fine. And yes, one fuse per run pre-firewall. And if going to ax rear bank. Then at the rear too. Check my video on fusing here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-26CsCjcaaLI.html
