Welcome back!!
On today’s episode at Full Throttle we will be tackling these worn down Brembo calipers and give them a brand new finish. It is highly recommended to remove the brake pads and rotors for best results, by doing so will leave no over spray onto crucial brake components as well as giving you professional results. These steps can also be followed on any brake caliper set up!!
Comment down below what color you want to do your calipers!!
Check out Last week’s episode on removing and replacing your brake pads and rotors on any fixed caliper set up.
CLICK NOW! • SAVED OVER $4000!! Rep...
Follow these simple steps at home to get professional results and make your calipers look like new! Anything that has paint involved comes down to your prep work. So take your time and ensure the entire surface is prepped (sanded and cleaned) before applying any paint. You can get the same results at home and know it’s done right!
*NOTE* You do not need to jack up the entire vehicle to do this, it is possible to do one caliper at a time, all you need to do is follow the same steps from start to finish on each wheel separately and then move onto the next and repeat the same steps. It will take more time but is possible for those who do not have the ability to lift and support the whole vehicle safely.
Equipment you will need to perform the work in this video:
1. Automotive Jack (something to lift your vehicle to remove the tire. Remember always use a jack stand to support the vehicle never rely on the jack.) - amzn.to/3huGQ72
2. JACK STANDS - amzn.to/3zVpu9K
3. Tools to remove tire (17mm socket for all Mercedes applications)
4. Sand paper (180grit-320) / Red scotch brite pad - amzn.to/3fRAxtF
5. Rubbing alcohol / paint prep solution
6. Masking tape - amzn.to/3UmdB4y
7. Plastic drop clothes / news paper
8. Rags - amzn.to/3pZaGTa
9. Paint Colors of your choice (Grabber Green) - amzn.to/3O4aEUh

Love the car I remember had one 08 plate c63 with sports pack but needed a service and new disks and pads with few other bits and the garage wanted over 5 grand to do the work. So I said no way Then would not let me take the car said it’s not safe to drive because the disks and if I had a crash on the way out they would be in trouble. So had to get a lorry to pick it up lol. Mate did the work then sold the car

Looks AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! Great Job! I have a 2017 C63 AMG Sedan. I bought the RED G2 Paint Kit late last year (and AMG Black Labels) but haven't done it yet. This came out AMAZING! Why did you do the RED First if Caliper was Green? I understand the Gray Primer. So did you do 1. RED 2. Gray Primer 3. Green 4. Clear?
@FullThrottleBHP
@FullThrottleBHP 4 года назад
Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate the feed back and comments! I want to start off by saying wicked car! Those 2017 C63 are beautiful. I have never personally used the G2 caliper kit but have heard great reviews on there products. This car is equipped with the P31 performance package from factory and part of that package included the red calipers over the regular silver option that you find on most. The brake calipers were red with the common issue of the clear coat peeling and fading, I then proceeded to sanding the calipers and a good clean with rubbing alcohol ( this is where I think you may have thought I applied red paint as it looks shiny in the video). After prep was completed I sprayed the 3 coats of the gray / 3 coats of green / applied decals / 3 coats of clear. Then allowed the calipers to cure.

Great video! I just painted mine. When can I wash the car again? Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before the calipers can get washed w/ a pressure washer? Is wheel cleaner safe to put on like normal or should that be avoided all together? Thanks!
@FullThrottleBHP
@FullThrottleBHP 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for reaching out and your feedback! Love to hear you painted your calipers. I would give the calipers a 2-3 days before washing if temperatures are higher. When using a pressure washer just be cautious of the pressure especially if it is at a carcass somewhere. Just don't get to close (same practice as usual when washing cars) I use meguiars wheel cleaner with out any issue. What ever wheel cleaner you use just be sure it never dries on the caliper and always test prior, follow all instructions on the product.. be sure the caliper is cool before spraying cleaner also and should be safe for your painted calipers especially if you applied the clear coat. Thank you again for your support and please consider subscribing and leaving a like if you have not done so already. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions please let me know!

To answer your question, zero issues re fitting any bolts/pins back in for re assembly. There is deffinitly many coats that I applied but the best trick is multiple light coats vs a couple heavy. Of course your final coat or two you want to lay down Medium thickness to get a nice smooth finish especially when it comes to your clear. Thanks for reaching out and the kind words. I am glad you enjoyed the episode! Please consider leaving a thumbs up and subscribing if you haven't already as your support goes a long way! Depending on the size of calipers you are doing 1 can of each should be enough. For "standard" size calipers and For large oversized as seen in the episode 1 can each should be enough, depending on amount of coats you may need a second can of color for good coverage. Just remember you want to take lots of time sanding and cleaning (preping) the caliper for good adhesion and do multiple light coats vs fewer heavier coats. Thank you again for your support and if you need any other help be sure to reach out! I will be doing an update episode very soon on how well the calipers have been holding so be sure to stay tuned for that! -Full Throttle

VHT says the paint needs to be heat-cured for it to be chemical-resistant. What us your experience with that?
@FullThrottleBHP
@FullThrottleBHP 2 года назад
Thanks for reaching out! That is a great question and am glad you mentioned it. VHT does highly recommend for best results to heat treat/cure the paint after application. It is not needed but highly recommended. I have previously had calipers removed on my SLK230 when i restored the finish of them and I did bake the coating. If you are in the position to do so it is the best route for longevity. That being said you can still perform the steps in this episode and achieve long lasting results. #1 PREP! Prep is so import you need to ensure you have everything sanded so the new paint will have something to bond to... and then of course cleaning!! The surface needs to be left with no residue. These steps are much more import to longevity then heat curing. What I do recommend and should have mentioned in the episode is to take the vehicle for a drive (Don't go crazy) but perform a few hard stops. This will generate some heat into the brakes and will help cure the calipers. You can repeat this a few times. I have had zero issues to this point with my green calipers on the AMG. I will be doing a follow up video very soon to showcase this. Brake dust (that i had sit on for weeks), road grime, and wheel cleaner chemicals have not done any noticeable harm to them at this point. (Over 1 year later) I am very happy with the results and believe I will have many years to come of trouble free. If you have any other questions be sure reach out, I am more then happy to help and be sure to stay tuned for the update video as well! I appreciate your support and ask for you to consider leaving a thumbs up and subscribing to the channel if you haven't already. Thank you again and until Next time... Keep er at Full Throttle! ;)

Why did you paint them grey before the green?
@FullThrottleBHP
@FullThrottleBHP Год назад
Thanks for reaching out! I hope you enjoyed the episode. Please consider leaving a thumbs up and subscribing if you have not already. It's a great question, the reason I painted them grey/silver was to give an even and lighter color base for the green to over lay. Even though the green is not technically a transparent color, depending on the base color you spray it over can vary the shade. Vs say over a dark grey/black color. Also it helped with a barrier between the red and green to reduce any chance of bleed through that is common with painting over red. I found the silver base coat allowed for a brighter green that I was trying to achieve and at the same time gave a nice even base to act as a primer/sealer. Hopefully this helps and answers your questions. If there is anything else I can help you with be sure to let me know - Fully Throttle

Thanks for reaching out, I hope you enjoyed the episode and please consider leaving a thumbs up and subscribing if you haven't already. After 2 years of summer driving they are still looking like the day I did them. If you are familiar with Mercedes they produce a lot of brake dust as well and no issues with fading or staining. I have a small chip on the front where I dropped the wheel taking it off and hit the caliper. Easily touch it up. And one spot that must have got it with a rock but other wise they are in great shape. Nice!!! I got a 2016 Benz S550, I been wanting to paint the calipers a mustard color like I seen on a few others. I'm nervous because I've never done it before. If I do it, how often would I have to redo them? Massachusetts weather & a daily driven...thanks
@FullThrottleBHP
@FullThrottleBHP 3 года назад
Wow! The 2016 S550 are beautiful vehicles, I agree the mustard/copper orange would look really good on that car. I actually went with that color on my 1997 Slk230 Kompressor. (Performed these exact same steps with the same products just copper color instead of lime green. ) I do not have any footage of that as it was prior to me starting the channel. Roughly 4 years ago, and they still look like the day I did them. To be fair that vehicle is stored in the winter but with proper prep work (sanding and ensuring everything is clean before applying paint) I personally do not think you should have any issues getting 5+ years out of them. Even driving in the winter should not affect the finish or longevity of the finish. I hope this helps if you have any other questions be sure to let me know! Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed and be sure to consider subscribing and giving the video a thumbs up if you havent already. Your support is greatly appreciated! I went with green as it is one of my favourite colors. Check out the newer episodes where we install new wheels on the amg. I find the new look with the wheels and green calipers suite the car very well with a unique personal touch to make it my own. Deffinitly not a color for everyone or every car. Thanks again for your support, until next time... keep er at Full Throttle! -Full Throttle

Great work , how many cans for all four calipers . One set ?
@FullThrottleBHP
@FullThrottleBHP 3 года назад
Yes I ended up using one can each. For me as you saw I went with a silver base to ensure even coverage as well as to also help get a brighter green with a lighter base coat. Then applied the clear after decals were set. Total 3 cans one of each color for all four calipers. Thank you very much for your feed back, I am glad you enjoyed the episode. I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I don't think duplicolor or VHT sells their products in the U.K (I could be wrong) You do not need to use this brand, (here it is a relatively easy product to get that is a fair price) Basically all you need is a reputable brand that sells high heat paint. You do not want to use standard automotive spray paint on your calipers. It will not last. Anything rated for higher temp will be good to use. Be sure to use a clear coat for added protection from UV / Chemicals/ Brakefluid... Have you experienced any cracking of the paint on the calipers ?

Hello, Thank you for reaching out, I hope you enjoyed the episode. Be sure to consider subscribing also leaving a thumbs up if you enjoyed the episode. I have had no issues with the calipers. I performed this same process as seen in the video on my Mercedes SLK230 Kompressor about 5 years ago. They still look like the day the work was performed. I highly recommend the process to anyone for there own vehicles, the cost, time and risk of other methods does not make sense to me when you can easily get long lasting results as seen in the episode. The biggest thing to remember is take your time with prep work!!!! Be sure all surfaces are properly sanded and cleaned before applying any paint. Thank you again for your support to the channel and if you have any other questions be sure to reach out. -Full Throttle

'properly'? Step 1, remove them from the vehicle.

Thanks for reaching out! For many people the amount of work and hassle to remove all 4 brake calipers from a vehicle is much more than they are looking to get into for a simple refresh. Not to mention the amount of extra time required to do this. For just a respray there is no reason to physically remove the calipers if you do not have the time or means to do so. As you can see with proper masking you can achieve just as good of a job leaving the calipers on the vehicle. The main benefit to removing the calipers off the vehicle would be much easeir prep (perform all prep work on a bench) instead of having it still attached. Also requires much less masking too. So even though there are benefits and downsides to both you can get just as good of a job from either option. Thank you again for reaching out if you have any other questions or comments be sure to let us know. -Full Throttle

Hello, I appreciate you reaching out and hope you enjoyed the episode. There is many reasons for not removing the calipers when doing a full respray. In this case I wanted to show it is 100%possible for almost anyone to perform this work at home with minimal tools. Removing all 4 calipers would have required much longer down time of the vehicle, additional cost of bleeding brakes and collecting old fluid That alone could be a huge turn off for some that do not feel confident in bleeding their own brakes, or have the ability to fully lift the vehicle and remove all calipers at once. On my slk I had the vehicle off the road for a few weeks a couple years back and tackled the same job which was going to include a full brake fluid change anyways. I removed all 4 calipers to restore them and you are right. It is much easeir working on a bench then bending over on the car lol. Both options certainly have pros and cons to them, but when done right can both result in fantastic results for years to come. I greatly appreciate your feedback and reaching out. It goes a long to helping other viewers as well. Please consider to subscribing and leaving a thumbs up if you havent already. And until next time.. keep er at Full throttle! -Full Throttle

@@FullThrottleBHP not having a go at ya but bleeding the brakes in not a hard task. Real reason why you should remove it is because the paint requires a curing process to be in an oven for an hour at about 100deg. You can do this process on the car by braking hard but you end up with contamination in the paint.

@@muckman5509 Your all good man, I'm open to all feedback. Your right bleeding is a very simple task but for some can be a bit more daunting for them. I actually did a full brake bleed as a maintence job after painting the calipers as it was due for its service. (Was pretty upset footage was lost on the process) I should have deffinitly expressed both options and why someone may choose one over the other. The main focus of the video was to show the quickest and easiest way to get proffesional results. This method could be performed by jacking up and removing one tire at a time, following the process from start to finish on one caliper. As some may not have the ability to jack up and leave their car on stands especially for a couple days. When I did the slk calipers (removal method) I did bake them to spec as you mentioned, It's been about 4 years and they look like the day i did them. I am interested to see longevity of non bake method (seen in video) so far after 1 season and some serious back road heavy braking through the Cabot Trail N.S they are looking great. Will certainly keep everyone posted with the longevity. I appreciate the feedback, it helps grow the channel and gives me ideas for the future and where I may be able to improve on the next one. That's what I love about the car community 🤘 - Full Throttle

You are more then welcome to perform that method. For many viewers it is simply not an option. May be due to experience, time constraint or simply not interested as it is unnecessary to remove the calipers to perform a proffesional job. This video is to show how to get the same results with out removing calipers. Thanks for your feedback though, it is always appreciated, will consider doing a second episode for those who wish to perform the removal method.
