Watch as David Austin Roses explains how to prune a newly planted shrub rose.
Pruning is essential if you really want your rose to thrive. English Roses are naturally vigorous and, if left without pruning, may become large and leggy shrubs.
The main purpose of pruning is to create a shapely, attractive shrub, with good structure, you can do this by simply removing parts of the plant during the non-flowering season. Pruning encourages fresh new growth and plentiful blooms for the following season.

This summer I've planted 35 roses in my garden. Mostly by D. Austin - they are the most beautiful in the world. Waiting impatiently for the summer bloom. Many thanks to all who created such beauty

Short, sweet, simple video. Definitely took the fear and mystery out of pruning my first rose, David Austin's "Emily Bronte". I don't even feel the need to go searching for any other videos for added help. Thank you!

Short, to the point video and very clear. Just what I was looking for thank you. P.s. I'm a proud owner of three David Austin roses, a Gertrude Jekyll planted a year ago and two planted yesterday: Poet's Wife and Princess Alexandra of Kent.

Such an interesting, no nonsense video. The way you cut without slanting cuts is very interesting. Is this for all roses or just new ones?

Hi Steve. It’s my first time to grow roses. I bought my very first David Austin rose in April and it now has 4 roses blooming on it. I’m delighted with it. Can I cut the roses as they grow or should I leave it until next year ? It’s a Gertrude Jeckll

Hi, Thank you for such a helpful video! What would be your recommendation for pruning a newly planted (one year old) climbing rose?
@david_austin_roses

Hi Anna, we would suggest to do very little if any pruning on a young climber as you want it to get height or spread. If you have the room it is important to train the stems into a fan shape as training the stems more horizontally than vertically to start with will encourage more flowers lower down. Happy gardening!

How dk I get rid of the black spot on my roses. This is the third year for them and they are showing already. I’ve tried everything last year, I’m going to be moving them to a more sunnier location (full sun)

Would you prune a shrub and a climbing rose the same way? I am very confused with you new climbing rose. I am not sure if the long stems with flowers on top are main canes or not and if I should prune or not.

Hi I am writing from india. Temp here is 27-30degrees centigrade. My david austin roae creeper came with brown spots on leaves and in red soil soni dipped it in water and freed the roots from the base of the hardened red soil. I do not think i damaged any roots. I also gave its leaves a fungus bath along with epsom. Kept it in shade and today is the 3rd day . Many leaves have dried out and on 3rd day many leaves are yellow which i removed. Stems are all green. Its in a pot bag. How many days do i keep it in shade ? Please advise

Do you prune all of your David Austin shrub roses the same? Example: Alnwick rose vs munstead wood? I realize munstead is much smaller

Good afternoon Sara, thank you for contacting us. The general rule of pruning is the same for all repeat flowering shrub roses however there are different factors which can change the way we'd prune our roses. For example, if they're in a pot or planted in the ground, if a rose has any particular growth habits which means it's slightly more twiggy than others. Or if you're pruning a larger shrub compared to a smaller shrub as you've mentioned, ideally you'd prune off a bit more of the larger shrub than you would the smaller shrub. I hope this helps! :)

I'm a bit puzzled, having come here from the David Austen website, where it said only to cut 3 to 5 inches off a one flower season rose, but Stephen cut this one down by half? If he does another video, could it be filmed in landscape mode, then there wouldn't be the two big black bars down either side? It is reassuring to see how roses will recover, and not to worry too much about angles of cuts or buds missed :)

I have the same question but I followed this video since the website also mentions not to worry about cutting back too much.

Good afternoon Jessica and Nicole, I can understand why this would be confusing so I do apologise. When pruning your roses, you don't need to worry about cutting back too much as they're very hardy plants and pruning shouldn't harm your roses. It depends mainly on the overall height of the shrub rose, for example if it's quite small in height (10 inches ) we would only recommend pruning about 3-5 inches off of the rose in January/February. However if it's a larger shrub you can certainly prune a bit more. I hope this helps! :)

How about a Rose that was planted yesterday. I am just completely new to this and everyone keeps saying I should prune roses to get more flowers but I don't know if I should do it now? My roses are about half a meter, all of them with one bloom each. I know I should get rid of the heads when they wilt but should I already start purning other stems, too? It's the beginning of spring here where I am from. Any advice would be much appreciated. I am lost.

Good morning Antoniette, we advise deadheading your rose after the bloom of your rose has been spent to encourage new flowers to bloom when your rose is in its flowering season. Pruning is usually done in January/February time in the UK when our roses are the most dormant however there is no need to prune at this stage as the plant would have been pruned by the nursery in your winter. We have a video on this channel which demonstrates how to deadhead a rose as it could be helpful. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rIXhdppmbQg.html

Can you prune in early Spring or only in late Fall?
@customerservices5707
@customerservices5707 2 года назад
Good afternoon, yes if you're located in the US we do recommend doing a Spring prune but it depends on where you're located. For example, in hotter states such as the Southeast we recommend pruning in January however if you're located in a cooler state we'd recommend pruning anywhere between the months of March - April. We also recommend pruning around August time if you're located in a much warmer state to keep the rose within bounds. I hope this helps. :)

You said this rose was planted a year ago, but how, or if, should it be pruned when actually planting it? (in autumn)
@david_austin_roses
@david_austin_roses 2 года назад
If you are planting during the autumn/winter you will not need to prune your rose, it will be delivered ready to plant and will not need pruning until the following winter.
