Thanks for doing this quick video. I'm embarrassed to say that unless there is a red or + sign on the wire, I didn't know what tool to use to check the polarity. Thumbs up!

Hi thejusticejen, I'm the same to you, even worse than. I leaned a lot things in high school, but I didn't know how to know the polarity of my DC power supply. Again thanks a lot for your video, patrickikis.

This is a great video. Simple and to the point. I only know basic stuff about electronics and if the wire was not red or have the red stripe, or marked + on the circuit board I had no idea what the polarity was. Most quality products will mark the wires, use standard color coding or be marked properly, but with some cheap stuff oftentimes there is nothing to go on. Greatly appreciate these videos because I have been on other forums where asking basic questions like this will get your ripped apart by the members.

Your video was the most clear and simple explanation on this topic i could find. You didnt assume that the audience knows certain things and thats great. For example you said set it to DC and also you mention the negative sign on the readout. The negative sign on my multimeter is not real clear so i was really confused until you mentioned it.

No markings on the original DC power adaptor. No relevant info on the unit I wish to power. The connector is damaged either on the supply or the unit and I just wanted to replace or hard-wire but had no idea what the polarity was. No colouring or markings on the wire either. Similar to someone elses comment; Every time I type the question about the devices polarity or how to check it in a search engine all I get are links to items I should purchase. Quick, easy and very instructive video. And one of the few multimeter video user to actually show clearly the setting you switched it to (I need that info to because I am that green) :) Thank you.

While this simple multimeter test may seem self evident or obvious to you, it was not to me. I need to splice some obscurely color coded wires together from different harnesses correctly, without frying something up. Ha, I wasn’t sure of the negative consequences of making an incorrect 50/50 guess…I assumed if it doesn’t work, I’ll just reverse it. It’s a good thing I saw this! Thank you, very well done and very helpful.

thank you for quick video. I didn't know how and only used multimeter to test voltage reading but during hooking up some 10 Gage wire for a cigerate lighter for the DC output to an accessory device I realized stupid you didn't lable the wires. and I'm running multiple sets for multiple connections one for a capacity monitor another for a DC to DC power supply (laptop) and another for a port to plug in my DC to DC phantom drone charger. oh and 2 extra USB ports step down very cheep circuits from Dollar store but I used all black wire and already fed the strands through my trunk under the seats into the area's I want. and forgot to lable them this simple method will help me to check polarity and I'm also going to double check on some things by disconnecting and reconnecting things separately so I know which is which and lable them I have a small setup solar panels batteries in parallel a 3000 watt power inverter and all the little DC to dc converters I can power my laptop for days or even make coffee whenever I want ofcource I could just make it at home too ;) or buy it when I'm out but this little expensive setup makes it so I can do it wherever and whenever I want. oh and I have all this set up from my car hahaha. 200 watts renogy panels mppt and soon to be adding even more batteries. all this is useless knowledge to someone else. it's all learning trial and error and interesting to me however. and eventually will use some of this on a RV and possible at home also. I'm always extra careful with the battery and connections least I short anything out. or explosion. I ordered so many fuses for everything. 300amp fuses 15 amp 10amp 30 am and placing them accordingly even the solar panel has a fuse coming from the positive to charge controller and from charge controller positive to battery array and waiting for my other Amazon order of the 300amp fuse to get here to place between battery and inverter even tho it says it already has fuses in it for short circuit protection. I'd rather blow my own fuses than replace ones in an inverter (haven't opened it to see what size they are yet anyway) the hardest part for me was positioning the panels on the roof and still keeping my sun roof and it being a curved roof. but I figured it out I feel like an odd ball the only one driving around my area with the frame panels on my car (not the flexible ones I decided after many reviews not to go flex route because I wanted something that would hopefully last a while the panels I have are rated to last... we'll see.... anyway..... Thanks for the help this helped greatly
