Im in a band with my close friend as the drummer, but i just joined a new band as the bassist and i know its just going to be more fun. How do i tell my bandmates/close friend that im just not having fun anymore with the band?

Hey Brian, I've been there, it's not easy. Could you ask the other band mates (one-on-one maybe) if they're having fun? Make it about them and their experience to start with. That way you get a clearer idea if it's just you that's lost interest or if it's fizzling out because sometimes that's what happens. Either result will need a different approach but whatever you do it'll be easier because you've planted the idea early that you might not be enjoying it. Hope that's helpful, let me know how you get on -Liam

I've been jamming with these guys for a year and we still have no bass player, no gigs, no social media, nothing. We're playing the same 12 or 13 songs and they want to record. But if we record who the hell is going to buy it? No one even knows about us. The singer and other guitar player keep saying "we have a plan"... but the plan sucks imo. He wanted to write songs then have a focus group where people would pick the best ones, record them, then get them all copy written. The plan had nothing about marketing or anything like that. What do you think of this situation? I really think it's a waste of time now and that I'd be better off working on my own stuff and getting that together.

Well TBH dude it doesn't even sound like you have a band yet. It's fine to think big or whatever but any plan that doesn't prioritize getting a bassist followed by gigs is mad. Ideally, you don't decide your best material your audience does. If you don't have an audience yet, you need to play more gigs. If I were you, I wouldn't necessarily quit but I'd definitely look elsewhere and maybe start writing your own tracks in the meantime. Best of luck to you

@@StabbedPanda thanks man. It's like everyone gave up on finding a bass player. We had 2 auditions a few months back and the one guy was good the other needed some work but they didn't want the guy who was good cause he had a wife and kids. I get it but here we are months later and no bass player still. We should've just seen where it went. We've been "just practicing" for a year. The singer also thinks we're gonna be on metal blade records cause a guy that worked for him wanted to fo something with him years ago but his other band mates "ruined" it for him...lol.

Yeah I've had a lot of "I reckon we're good enough to X because of some guy I know" conversations and the all turn out to be bull. Unless there's paperwork in front of you it means nothing, and even then there's no guarantee. The older you get, the chances of hiring bandmates with kids gets higher, theres no reason that's a hindrance. Good luck to you bud

i had to leave a band because the leader literally said this isn't a band you're just helping me play my songs. that's cool except his songs are objectively bad and unfinished. like, someone just recorded this in their bathroom on an iPhone level of unfinished, but he releases these recordings as "singles" and "albums". he insists everything sound like garbage (he is obsessed with shoegazey and sounding like my blood Valentine) and wanted me to play sloppy and bad, hated when i used any vibrato at all bit he abused the hell out of his whammy bar. He always complained that I play an SG and don't gave a whammy bar. We didn't have a drummer so we were playing along to drum tracks he made which were literally a kick and snare looping for 2-3 minutes with zero change. He also wants to end every show with him playing his own solo song (that he cannot carry with his quiet mousey singing voice), so me and the bassist don't get a send off from the crowd. I offer to make some new drum tracks that are more dynamic, I requested we tighten up the songs and give them a proper ending because the audience has no idea whats going on when every song just fades out into nothing and he has to go over to his laptop and stop the drum loop, but he said that was his "vision" and he wasn't interested in having anyone else contribute anything to the music. I said If this isn't a band then I'm not interested in being your free labor, especially when I get nothing out of it creatively or professionally. Talentless arrogance is the worst. I'll never play in a band with friends again, only serious and mature musicians.

Ok, here is the situation. We have a gig in December. Which is way too far away. AND we are not making any money from it. Also our lead singer doesn't know his own vocal range so sounds dreadful when singing. I'm a backup guitarist and now they insist I do the solo when we have another guitarist who does stuff like that. Should I leave?
@StabbedPanda
@StabbedPanda 7 лет назад
Alfie Romeno Sounds like you should but consider the following: Is it worthwhile experience? I.e., do you get to gig with them a lot? Do you have other bands you could join? If you're 2nd guitarist for a reason you shouldn't have to do solos, or anything you're uncomfortable with really.

So i play in a band where the main idea was making stoner rock mixed with sludgy doom metal, but oldschool, so lets dat black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin mixed with more of this fat sludge in it. We are now playing 3 songs after a year of practice that sound exactly the same, with really really cringy titles and lyrics that the drummer wrote that are almost like a book. Its not that i want to play grindcore or death metal but i want some more upbeat tempos in it. But our drummer doesnt want to. Half a year ago he asked me if i was still interested and i was at that point confused if i was yes or no, but i said i was still interested, but that was due to recordings that i wanted to help them out with Now after recording the same songs over and over and over again im really done with it. Its really not my thing and i kinda dislike how our drummer (you can call him more like a dictator) talks about certain riffs like "wow thats such a horny riff it sounds like a nice thight wet pussy" I really dont like it anymore, doesnt make me money so tonight im just going to wuit

Learn guitar learn vocals learn drums then you wont have to put up with the constant drama and bullshit you just do it on your own studio projects rule playing out is overrated especially when you have to tolerate egotistical narcissist who only care about getting their balls rubbed
