How to Raise Your Healthy Cholesterol (HDL's) to Clean Those Arteries | Dr. Mandell

Raising your good cholesterol (HDL's) will lower your bad cholesterol (LDL's) which are known to cause clogging of the arteries.
Clogged arteries result from the build-up of a substance called plaque in the arterial walls. It is also medically referred to as arterial plaque. This plaque can reduce blood flow or even block it altogether.
Clogged arteries increase your risk of developing other health complications like a heart attack or stroke.
Some of the most common risk factors for clogged arteries are:
High levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) or low levels of HDL (good cholesterol)
A high blood pressure
Smoking tobacco
Diabetes or elevated blood sugar levels
A family history of atherosclerosis or clogged arteries
Stress
Obesity
A sedentary lifestyle
Most cases of clogged arteries do not exhibit any symptoms until a heart attack or blood clot presents itself. However, in cases where 70% or more of the arteries are blocked, you will notice the following symptoms.
Severe cases of clogged arteries may exhibit symptoms like:
Shortness of breath
Sweating
Nausea
Chest pain or angina
Palpitations of the heart
Dizziness
Weakness

30 years ago when my father and all 5 of his brothers were having artery clogging issues, I talked to my doctor about options. I was 25 at that time and my overall cholesterol was good, but my HDL was only at 29. My father's HDL was 27 when he began to have issues at 49. I took his advice and worked my way up to taking 1500mg of slow release Niacin every night before bed with a light snack. Since then my HDL has always been at 60 - 90. Niacin also lowers LDL and overall total cholesterol. I highly recommend it if you can get used to occasional flushing. God bless

@@ncedisafeni351 no worries… If you do start taking it, you might want to start with 500 mg and work your way up. Get your blood work so that you can see your progress after about 3-6 months.

@@hopeofeternallife686 No, sir, no prescription drugs for anything long-term or heart/cholesterol related. I will add that I failed to mention that you want to start out with a low-dose and work your way up. You might want to start with 250 to 500 mg. Niacin can cause flushing, which is a hot feeling with rash. I usually get it about once a month around my neck. The flushing only lasts about 30 minutes - that is why I take it at night, because if I do get flush, I usually don’t even know it happened because I am sleeping. If you start with 250 or 500 mg, after about six months or so maybe have your cholesterol checked and see where the numbers are at. If your HDL is still not where you want it increase the amount by 250 to 500 mg and, go another six months before getting your cholesterol tested. I pray that this works for you. Great information Dr.Mandell...thank you..at one time both mine were off the charts and my dr. Said I was at cardiac risk, that was 5 years ago and now taking better care of myself and working out and exercising and thriving living a healthy routine and lifestyle and changed my diet, I No longer have high cholesterol both are normal now😁💪 have a great day too

Its very confusing. Some doctors say raise hdl and ldl don't matter, and others say keep your ldl under 75 and hdl don't matter...

I made my Dr. give me the NMR test to see how clogged up my arteries are instead of taking the common Cholesterol test. If your number is high, wham, they will put you on statins. Thank you Dr. M you have a lot of great info. Have a great day!

I am 32, Recently Nov of 2023 i😢 diagnosed with 301 total high blood cholesterol, HDL 54 and LDL 235 and 3 months ago i AUG of 2023 my total cholesterol was 205, HDL 49, LDL 156, just because i went throught keto diet very low carbohydrate intake from end of AUG to NOV and from OCT to NOV i increase meat consumption due to my weight keep on dropping from 90kg drop to 85 in the middle of OCT, therefore in the middle of OCT i started to eat 1 meal of fried chicken chop per week and plenty of vegetable daily, exercise 3 times a week, now my cholesterol go up crazy, hope to control it and pull it down

I’m not overweight, have a healthy diet, taking omega 3 supplements, doing 4-5 times exercise per week, also meditating to reduce stress levels and I’m still struggling to raise HDL.

Hi doctor My HDL is 66 and Triglycerides is 70 but LDL is 153 . What should I do? Should I increase my hdl more than 66? Should I butter,ghee, whole milk , peanuts and coconut? I eat balanced diet with veggies and fruits. I am vegetarian so don’t eat meat or eggs. Eat sweets once in a while.I walk a lot. What do you suggest ! Thanks!

Just had cholesterol done 3 days ago and again the total is 260. My triglycerides is 85 my HDL is 69. The LDL is 175. And again the doctor said he can put me on a statin no stations for me.

LDL is not bad if particles are big and bouncing off the arterial walls. As one cardiologist said. When cholesterol is good, is very good. Must be analyzed by LIPOPROTEIN ( a).
