Reading isn't learning. Don't just skim through those books. Understand them, analise them. View the points of the author from different perspectives. Your bookshelf isn't your trophy cabinet. It's not about how may books you've read, it's about how deeply you understood those topics.

Ehhhhh, have you tried it? Because I’ve been reading 4 to 5 days books a week and a lot has changed. It’s not that hard to understand them if you are spending your whole day dissecting it while making income. It’s definitely possible :)

I have the following reasons to read book 1. it keeps me motivated and inspires me to work on my purpose. 2. I aim to be a life-long learner, reader, and achiever. 3. I love thinking and creating new ideas and philosophies of life. 4. I enjoy listening to others' ideas and ways of thinking and especially when there is something new to learn from them. reading a book is like communicating with the author, trying the understand the depth of the words, this is enjoyment. so for me, reading books is like both enjoyment as well as learning.

Love the "3S formula" for each time you finish a chapter - the story that inspired you, the statistic that blew your mind, and a note of something you want to share with someone else. I agree with your point about bringing energy and enthusiasm to a book, vs having the attitude of forcing ourselves through them. If you "have to" read a book for school, that's a joy killer if that's the attitude. If you "get to" read a book for a class because you think through why your professor thought that book would benefit you as a person, a citizen or in your future profession, then it puts a different spin on it. I remember the summer I was 9 years old, staying with my grandparents. They only had children's classics (from when their children were young). What did I know about classics? All I knew at 9 was, "Oh, cool, this book has an elephant on the cover!" and "this book is about kids having adventures!" I read Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Jungle Book, Kim, Scarlet Letter, and a dozen more. Then, over the next few years in middle and high school, we would get to those books in the curriculum and I would be so excited at the chance to revisit a beloved friend, whereas all the other students groaned and moaned about "having to" read these wonderful books. It taught me such an important life lesson about the power of choice and attitude.

What I've learned in this video is that he wants us to be an effective reader. When it comes to reading a book, it is not just about how many books you can read but it is about being an effective reader that we could be. I had this confusion for the longer time that I should read much of book even though that book is not relevant anymore for me. The relevancy of the book should also be consider. It is what he mostly mentioned to his video that it is okay to choose topic that pique your interest, not just to oblige yourself to read it cover to cover; this is also I want to practice it. Mostly for some novice, they think that reading should be an obligation to be a reader but once you master the art of reading you will also think about the effectivity and how you can make the book serve you. Because we should make the book serves us, not to serve the book, so it doesn't matter if a certain book doesn't make you immerse to continue it. One thing that we should also consider is that reading should also equate to the status quo; in which part you want to have a piece of knowledge. He mentioned that first thing he do is that he let himself watch some video for him to contextualize the book. This is also to let you think if the book can help you with your current dilemma or to tap your intellectual curiosity. Being an effective reader is underrrated. With this evolving technology that most of us is curator and creator is few. We mostly think about the consumption of information and less in using it. To be effective we should also adhere with the application because it is not about knowing but it is about the action that we can make through reading.

I think changing "skiming" for "reading" suits better what he is showing up. Even for a "informative book". I think it's very hard for me, a non specialist in a subject, to select without prior reading what is and what is not important from a book judging by the title of the chapters and a previous interview with the author (who is the specialist, in the case)

Hi guys. I have a suggestion. Search the topic of your book in youtube and see the related videos. It's more interesting than reading the books. after being familiar with the topic, go to the book and only have a glance and you can see you do not need to understand the concept by yourself. That's enough to just see what's more in those pages. Good Luck

After reading books from last 4 year I never felt I should read a book in a single day by whatever method you are telling. If you read a book within a month then also fine because the purpose is to gain something at least one thing is enough from a book to apply in our life. But during these years of journey I realized one thing, every time when you re-read the same book you will gain something different from the previous reading because when you read last time we are in different situation, mood , mindset , etc. and when you read currently then again we are in different mindset, mood, etc. so if you read only one book throughout the year at least 6-8 times then see the wonders it will create. So my point is many people focus on reading more and more books but I think we should focus on quality of reading rather than quantity.
@user-wl6sc1ci4s
@user-wl6sc1ci4s 4 года назад
The quantity of how much books you've read doesn't make change. Keep in mind that the ability to understand the message that book conveyed is what really matters. The majority of us is reading only to say about himself a reader, read with passion, read with desire, read with focus, read with big interest and finally read because you admire reading

I always love having conversations with people that claim to read a lot of books in a short period of time. The conversation usually goes something like me having to tell them that I didn't read all of the books that they are claiming to have read, but then I ask them about the specifics of a book that we both have read and they cannot recall any of it. Reading is not the same as learning. Life is not a checklist to be gotten through. It is an experience to be learned from. It is one of the reasons I wish people would stop taking selfies in front of historical landmarks, or recording concerts that they are at. Just live in the moment people actually experience the things that you are there for, rather than endlessly chronicle your adventures so that you appear cool online and get a few likes/views/upvotes.

Nah, it's true though. The method that Shetty proposes means that you'll only read what YOU want to know, which means that you'll skip anything that's uncomfortable, hard to understand, or lengthy. The method only works with non-fiction easy-to-read books.

Personally I like engaging with my books and treating it like a conversation. I write thoughts in the margins and underline key points and then write my own “personalized table of contents on a blank page in front of book”. That way I can open it up years later and reread and see what I’ve taken action on. Plus some of the best parts of the book are in the places and sections you would least expect or be interested in!

Gates said in an interview his policy is to finish the book if he starts to read it. His approach is more strict and he does deep learning. He analyses the book and checks with his existing set of knowledge and writes down the important pointers or high light em. That is real learning. However the so called smart reading isn’t bad as well if only done for specific info the reader want. I wouldn’t call it reading a book a day lol.

I got your point 😊 We should skim through the main points of the book to understand what the book is about and if it is worth it to invest my time to read the whole book. It actually can help to get my ideas about a book before reading them so we can decide if we should read it or not, and if it is something I figure I need to read, then this time I am gonna read cover to cover which will add some real values in my life and there's more possibility of me using those Ideas to improve myself instead of halfheartedly finishing a book I don't like for the sake of finishing it. That’s my interpretation of this video and I think it only works for non-fiction. Thank You so much for putting the time and effort to make this video 😊💕 I'm gonna go watch some Tedtalks by some of the authors whose books were on my TBR list then read them

This is actually my approach to books on a shelf in a book store - it's how I decide if I want to buy it (without using a text marker, obviously). 😄 But if you managed to sensibly skim the Kahnemann book within two hours, then chapeau! Reading tips: 1. Check book summaries to decide whether you really want to read it or not. 2. In Index of a book highlight the part which interest you the most. 3. When reading a chapter firstly, skim read it to get an overview of it and decide whether you want to read it again for better understanding. 4. Read the first chapter because author has put so much energy into that. 5. Use finger while reading to speed up the process. 6. Focus on the strongest 5-6 words of a paragraph for faster reading. 7. After the end of each chapter write down this 3s: • What did this chapter is conveying according to me? • What to do I learn from this chapter? • Which one of the stories in this chapter inspired me the most? • Where & When I am gonna apply the principles which i learn from this chapter?

This also makes it more fun and interesting and actually makes you more focused and engaged as you try to decide if it's worth reading or not. And if you decide you want to read something cover to cover it's because you genuinely want to. Idk about y'all but I have a massive pile of books I want to read, so this will help me out a ton. The book 'How to read a Book' has some very interesting points I think you would like. There are 4 stages of reading and you are primarily focused on just the second stage (skimming reviewing etc. within a limited period of time that you have set for yourself). This can be powerful but stages 3 (reading in an unlimited amount of time to get the most out of a book) and 4 (reading multiple books at the same time on a specific area to critically analyse what you are reading and create ideas for yourself) are mind-blowing and will help you remember much more...
