Great job explaining. I’ve had both sides of the extreme happen to me out here in the ca delta. Last year I found a bed in a marina and the male (I assume was pissed) and I caught him twice in 15 mins, the female got curious about the commotion and came in for a third look (this time a chartreuse chatter bait). Mr buck literally was trying to get in between her and my “dead sticking” of the bladed lure. He even tried to corral her off out of the way but big momma had to come check out my chartreuse chatter bait. She came over, looked down at it, picked it up and swam away, so I had to feed a little line out and eventually she got it a little more in her mouth, I set the hook and lost her a few seconds later because I’m positive I didn’t get a good hook set as she never ate it. Anyways, thanks for the clear explanation and that’s my story lol

John, I love to Bed fish and think I'm pretty good at it. However, if you can enlighten me and others on how to catch them when they are rubbing you will have solved all of the world's problems in my book. I have gotten to the point where I don't even try when they are rubbing anymore. Highly frustrating.

I have a question, Let's say you are heading out of a cove/slip after you looked through the area for bedding fish. You happen to see fish actively heading into that same pocket, do you stop to catch them as they are swimming by you (and how would you do that) or do you come back later to catch them.

I had a weird one on Lake Fork the other day. Female on a deep bed (about 6 feet deep, which is deep for Fork). Tossed in there a couple of times and the female spooked off, but she came right back. Strange part was no male bass ever showed up. Pitched the bait in again and after I dragged it out of the bed, then I reeled it in fast to get in another pitch. At that point, the female chased the bait nearly to the boat. So, I knew on the next pitch I'd probably get her. I pitched again and hooked her. The strange part for me was a female on an unguarded bed and for her to be that aggressive.

Can you apply these same tips to smallmouth?

Why don’t we just leave bedding bass alone and fish for something else? Here in the Midwest there are tournaments where bass are taken off the beds, brought to the weigh station, and released nowhere near where they were caught. And every year the bass fisherman complain about bass numbers and size, usually while they are pulling bass off the beds.
