Create realistic looking gun smoke and exhaust stains on scale models using chalk or soft pastels. It could also be used to create dust on model trains and freight for railway modellers. A clear coat from either an airbrush or a spray can is needed to finish this technique.

Best achieved on a matt finish. Trying to do it on a gloss finish is near impossible as the chalk wont take, it'll just fall off.

I wasn’t planning to release this video today, but work on editing the F2 Lightning video has been delayed because of university work. It should be released on the 16th. In the meantime I hope you enjoy this video!

Epic channel with some very handydandy tips! Love how the clips aren't too long and get straight to the point! I can't stand an hour and a half videos where you have to skip to actually find the stuff you're interested in. Keep up the good work, you already made me a better painter.

I use the pigment powder technique with WW2 aircraft exhaust stains...I use black (then sealed) and then white but I found that after adding the white and sealing it the white would pretty much disappear...So I experimented with different sealing coats and I found that the only one that didn't lose the white so much was hairspray...The cheap firm hold stuff that comes in a spray can worked really well...

Hey Owen, you've got the best "how to" videos I've found. Is there a easy way to find your videos on RU-vid ? I've been building for a long time but have never learned the fine points. Thanks for the help.

My first method is using a pencil. You draw a line to the direction of the aircraft then thicken the line then use an eraser and lightly smudge the unwanted effect. A damped cotton bud can also be used. Then, maybe using this videos method and adding my idea (which I got on your 'defining panel lines' tip video) could create a great effect. Try it too Owen!!!

Video at a perfect timing for me...I want to make some die cast racing cars with a dirty "finish line" (with exhaust stains, smoke etc...), I'm using panpastels so it's pretty much the same tecnique. The only problem is...the pastels won't apply well on a smooth surface...is there anything I can do to enhance the grip? I can't use sandpaper since it will riun the paint and/or the decals...

Add a matt coat to the car first. (Make sure to mask any clear parts first!)

Hey Owen, I'm not the type of person to go out and buy thinner, chalk and so so, with water can I thin the pain that comes with the model? And what's a good way of making sure decals stick to the modal (PVA watered down did you mention a few times?) Your work is fabulous by the way, keep going
@quickkits
@quickkits 7 лет назад
You can thin acrylic paint with water, yes. Also, watered-down PVA glue (give it time to dry, then apply the decals on top of the coat) under the decal is a good idea. If you don't have any varnish, then you could coat the decal when it's dry with another coat of watered-down PVA glue to protect it

What if you dont apply clear varish cause I don't have any? Does it fall off?
@quickkits
@quickkits 4 года назад
If you don't seal the chalk on with varnish or another clear coat you might smudge it or it might come off over time
@felixthecat0371
@felixthecat0371 6 лет назад
The coat of varnish should be applied on the whole model right?
@quickkits
@quickkits 6 лет назад
It doesn't have to be if you're just sealing in the weathering, however it may help get a consistent look over the whole model if you did spray it all with the varnish

do you think i could get away with using graphite powder?
@Adol666
@Adol666 5 лет назад
Vallejo and MIG both mack a Carbon Black Pigment. It works really well. I think Graphite would give it to much of a grey metallic look. It works great on tank tracks though

Why don't you like airbrush or don't use it?
@flamingskull2993
@flamingskull2993 7 лет назад
My best way to add on exhaust and gun smoke is to add a small amount of enamel black to the place you desire and drag the paint backwards. If you don't like the appearance, get some Decalfix and wash it off

Does it really work? how do you seal it afterwards?
@markmalasics8413
@markmalasics8413 5 лет назад
I know it's popular but I can't understand why builders decide to crap up their work to make it look "realistic". I always thought the end result was to have a model appear, in it's own way, glamorous, not to look like it sat for 3 weeks in the back yard of a crack house in Bridgeport.
@johnmclean6498
@johnmclean6498 4 года назад
Yes...I agree if its an F1 bike or car, but a frontline aircraft was hard used and never got spit-shined. Even carrier jets if you look. If it s Hawker Typhoon in France, it's covered in mud, gunsmoke and exhaust stains.
