I came across some really cool super technical poi moved and showed them to my girlfriend cause my mind was blown . She replied "But he's not dancing with the music , it doesnt look right" .. It truly does make your poi spinning that much better to have some dance to it. Thanks nick :) - Even if you can't dance at all (like me) poi has been a way for me to "dance" and people like it. One day I was particularly working on my footwork to music while spinning and I had a couple walk over an tip me $20 and specifically say "We've been watching you for a while.. I just loved the way you move your feet" ... blew me away .. Keep up the good work Nick. You've & yuta have been my inspiration since I started spinning. Thanks a bunch for all you've taught me!
This is the first in a series of videos that explore, in-depth, how to actually move with the rhythm of the music. Very few people do this. Even high-tech spinners often don't do this. To move with the music you have to explore the rhythm with the up-swings, down-swings, in-swings, out-swings, and also the turning of the body. This series is important to me and I'll be super grateful for any help with re-posting, sharing, etc. Enjoy and let's all learn to share our booties while playing poi! :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!! Please could you explore this series extensively, I find this particularly frustrating when I tend to poi more rythmically and focus on open patterns and most of the folks that poi at our festivals in South Africa focus rather on stall patterns and "juggling type" movement and become critical because I'm not doing enough "technically challenging" movements. I prefer to see poi as an extended form of dance that is very expressive and most of all FUN. You have spoken my mind thank you again! :)
Gavin Heath Same issue. I hope you fared well on your flow studies :) I'm going to start extensive training on this series. It's the fundamental key to my growth in flow because i'm really only able to fully flow when there's a bomb ass beat in my body. 1ov3
Gabe Buchanan I'm really enjoying a mixture of tech and flow poi right now and keeping it all in beat and smooth is an awesome challenge, but if it weren't for the basics that Mastah Woolsey breaks down so well I'd never be at this point, keep the beat and flow the light fantastic friend !
Thank you Nick! You are the BEST teacher ever!!! I had to show you my support so I donated $5.00 to you on Playpoi. I know it isn't much, but I hope that this message causes other to donate to you because you are the best! Thank you!

That's amazing you have permission form the Polish ambassador. I love their music. Ok Excellent tutorial. Been sharing your videos on reels with people on poi chat. And exposing newbies to playpoi. 👍 Big love nick! X
I'm so happy someone said it lol. I feel I need music to give me direction on where to go with my flow. 💜Music! It llooks so much cooler when your spinning to the music it just makes sense to me lol. It's jamming out with your props and u gotta have music! Lol love watching your videos I'm new to poi but love mini hoops and I've learned a lot! :-)))
Thank You so much for the vids! I love them...they make me laugh...and they inspire me to continue practicing and learning new moves and techniques. I appreciate it! keep em coming :D
Hi Nick! Just wanted to reach out and say that after playing with LED poi's at a full moon drum circle, it inspired me to research and learn how to become awesome at this craft :-) I was fortunate to come across your videos early in the game and I'm so excited! Just wanted you to know that I'm smiling and giggling at your humor and it is so much fun learning! Your dog Hanu (sp?) is adorable! Where is Sacred Valley?! Would love to hear from you :-)
I can't find the music on the website. please help. This track sounds incredible. I just found poi 3 months ago and fell in love within seconds. 2 weeks after starting to learn moves I tried it with music and it changed everything. Epic fun.
Lol I have the same problem with my dogs, they just seem to love getting in the way, i try to avoid them but they kind of have to learn to shift lol, wish they would hurry up and learn as i feel bad every time, even tho my Staffy doesnt seem to register the hits anymore the daft dog.
Hi nick! I see you've been in Peru for a while now. just wondering, if you know of any places to get fuel? I know you are in Cuzco area, i will visit during the summer..maybe we can possibly meet up!
hey, sorry i know you commented this 2 YEARS ago, and you've probably already found out what those are called, but just in case you're still searching; they're called spiral wraps! and yes, they do have a video on it! it's not really a tutorial though, you kinda just gotta use it as a base :(
First off let me say you are the best! I have watched all your videos, but I am still an amateur! I have 2 sets of glow/flow balls, 1 set of fire poi and 1 set of veil poi. I must say though because I am dyslexic, I am finding it hard to understand how to move the poi in the ways I want it. I start off fine (with the wrists) but end up with using my arms instead. do you have any advice for me? I tried watching you in my long mirror because it show you doing it backwards and it did help a little, but I still end up using my arms. oh and hitting myself ALOT! lol best way to respond to me is emailing me which is my name at gmail. I would really appreciate it very much as I would like to dance at Beltane instead of beating my Djembe drum! lol much love, bless be
+Bradey Snow I suppose I should have phrased that better. By "4-beat Reel," I mean a reel that hits the bottom of the circle with every beat. In this video, he took a 3-beat reel and made it compatible with a 4 beat measure. What I'm referring to/looking for is a reel that has four down beats. Does that make more sense?
Playing of the poi with no maori lyric is just another dance. However if you wanting to learn properly come to New Zealand where those maori will teach you the real stuff.
