How to Rebuild a Coleman 228E - Lantern Lab Episode 5

In this episode of Lantern Lab I'll clean up and repair a 1954 Coleman 228E. The 228 is also referred to as the "big hat" for its large ventilator. The big vent points light down making it a great table lantern or for lighting a door or pathway. I generally have an easier time getting double mantle lanterns to work, especially once I built the special wrench for getting the thin nut off.
One thing I didn't show in this video is the fuel/air tube, I did the same basic cleanup job on it that I did in episode 4, if you check out that video it covers the basics.
These instructions apply to just about all 220 and 228 lanterns from the B through the F series so: 220B, 220C, 220D, 220E, and 220F plus the 228B, 228C, 228D, 228E, and 228F. Later lanterns (220/228 H, I J and K) are similar but a bit different.
The steps I follow here were originally outlined by Frank Bebb of Old Town Coleman. A lot of people would call this a "Full Frank Rebuild". You can find the detailed instructions here: www.oldtowncoleman.com/tech/re...
Any parts required in the course of a rebuild can be acquired from Mike at Oldcolemanparts.com he's a great guy, ships fast and charges a reasonable price.
There are a few things I didn't do in this video mostly because of time but also because I started with a reasonably good lantern that didn't need much more than a good cleaning. Often I'll find that the inside of the lantern fount (thats the tank part) is full of rust and other nastiness. Thats best remedied with a soak of some kind of acid aided by some mechanical action to help loosen stubborn particles, I use BBs inside the fount. This is often referred to as "The BB dance".

I am restoring my grandfathers 228E, made in August 1955. It’s in nice shape, some rust in the tank, but not bad. This video is so helpful, thanks a lot. I also have his old dual burner stove which looks mint. Great channel.

Hey man thanks so much I was trying to find the exact lantern because all mine are different but this was a good walk through step by step. Thank god because this one pisses me off so many times. I got mine from my brother in a trade and it wasn't working like he said and it sat in a basement of a barn and hasn't ran in about 10 years my guess and it leaked from every where on the lantern and pissed me off so bad I posted online for sale and gave up but you saved it and now it's fixed and i learned alot thank you so much! And NO I'm not selling it anymore. 😁🙂

Great timing; I'll be starting on my first lantern project, a 220F (a pair of them, actually) in a few weeks, and I have never had a lantern apart before. Neither holds pressure and both founts smell pretty bad, so it could be an adventure. Vids like yours will be a great supplement to what I've read already. I just love these things.

at 16:43 you push on the pump plunger and it doesnt go in. I soaked the pump cup in oil and it does pump up the fount but it doesnt push back on the plunger as it did with you. Is that leaking around the cup or valve related? Thanks!

Most of the time when they don't hold pressure its because of the gas cap seal. I've got a video on that too.

Hi, big fan of your videos. Can you possibly do a video that goes in depth on dissasembling and cleaning vintage lanterns? what chemicals you use, how you do it, and perhaps touch on how to blow torch frozen gas knobs. Thank you so much. Your videos are extremely helpful.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
Next time I find a lantern with a stuck knob I'll make a video. Basically you just play the flame over the packing nut a little. Remove the knob first of course, keep the flame moving and check frequently to see if it freed up. Once its free put a drop of oil on the shaft to keep it loose.

I have one that started leaking gas somewhere under the metal frame, and started disassembly. Problem is everything is so frozen, and noticed you used an impact drill on the main tube. Wouldn't using a penetrating oil like Kroil on a lot of the threaded nuts/screws a few days beforehand help?

I have this lantern. What causes the light to pulse? I did some minor disassembly and cleaned things out with the mantles and the cleaner valve it did help but did not completely fix it. Any ideas on how to get a steady light?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
I find the twins tend to pulse, sometimes it can be fixed with a new generator, alternately messing with the generator packing (ie custom generator packing) can help. Some folks like a cap full of seafoam gas additive and claim it helps with pulsing.

Two piece vent can be made one piece with a MIG welder. Great video.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
The heat of the welder is awful hard on the surrounding porcelain.
@markeholbrook
@markeholbrook 7 лет назад
The heat over time usually causes the porcelain to chip off in three places, which then begin to rust and eventually causes to top of the vent to come loose. So yes, the welder is hard on porcelain, but I have tacked the vent back on without any new damage. I have thought about getting a kiln and replacing the porcelain, but that would take a lot of skill and knowledge and time, which I don't have much of. I have heard that if you fire the old vent in a kiln, remove it at full temperature, then drop it into cold water the old porcelain will pretty much all break off. Then you would have to get to clean bare metal, make repairs, coat the vent with glaze, fire it, probably more than once, and expect mixed results for a while. So, I probably won't ever try to to do that. I enjoy your videos, they are very informative.

Hey I had some questions for you about the piece your friend made you and the socket you used in you impact wrench what was the socket you used to cut down and also could you Please tell me what is the exact Thread Pattern for the Piece you had made I’m wanting to make one myself or have one made Please Help Thank You 🙏🙏🙏
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 2 года назад
The socket is, I think, 9/16" but I don't think the exact size is particularly important. If I were going to make another I would use a larger socket and pad the inside with some hard rubber. I don't remember the thread size of the plug other than it was somewhat obscure or I would have bought a die to make the plug myself. Any competent machinist should be able to measure it and make one for you.

Nice video. I'm trying to clean up a 220F. The air tube does not had a screw like on yours, but it has a threaded hole. Could be for a screw that is missing? Or it could be for a slightly different design? Nevertheless, I can't get the air tube to unscrew even with a bit of heat.., New pump.., Seems to hold pressure even though the filler o-ring is pretty screwed up.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 4 года назад
Its missing the screw but as you've found after its aged a little that screw isn't really required. Sometimes that air tube requires a fair amount of heat...

I have a 220H lantern and I am having compression issues. The plunger pump has been replaced, and the entire lantern has been taken apart to try and find the cause. A new plunger has been oiled/installed, but I am unable to compress the plunger at all. No air is entering the tank, so I am not sure what might be blocked. I have removed the check valve for cleaning, but no luck. Any help would be appreciated.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
If you pull the check valve out and still can't pump theres an obstruction in the tube. Often this is a fatal problem as that tube isn't serviceable. I would suggest consulting with the folks over at the Coleman Collectors Forum, they may have some ideas on getting the tube opened up.
@crabtrap

curt, start using mairatic acid at full strenght. i dump ALL nonpainted parts in soak bucket for about 5 mins...they come out looking showroom new. BUT you need to neutrelize in baking soda and water bath after. THEN, you need to back in oven at about 300f for an hour. this stops flash rusting by releasing hydrogen from the steel.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 5 лет назад
Yeah, no. Hydrochlolric acid (I think you meant muriatic which is in fact hydrochloric acid) is much more dangerous than the citric acid I use. The fumes will rust any iron or steel nearby and it makes things dammed hard to paint later without spending a bunch of time neutralizing. Plus its many times more expensive. Why would I want something thats more expensive, more dangerous and harder to use?

Lantern Lab yes. Not the inlet to the valve that has the square brass shutoff valve but the larger threads on the outside of the valve body. I think it is 1/8x27 NPT but not sure. I’m ordering a 6” 1/8 NPT tap unless I hear otherwise. We shall see.

Hey on my 220e one of the "collars" where the mantles tie to falls off when heated. Any ideas how to resolve this? Been looking a high temp thread locker but they max at 500f. Theres a metalic based good up to 2400f by jbweld. What route would you take to resolve it? Im on the mindset of some exhaust manifold sealant/locker if they sell such a thing. Other than that no idea how to go about it. Any input is appreciated.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 6 лет назад
Clean it really well then find a piece of rod thats slightly too large to go into the tube, grind a taper on the rod. Heat the tube and quench it a couple times which will make it go soft. Then with it hot (but not red) gently persuade it onto the taper, the idea is to enlarge the tube ever so slightly. If the threads are buggered you might want to touch them up slightly with a needle file first. Fortunately burner tubes and caps for a 220E a pretty easy to get if you need a replacement.
@Mixwell1983
@Mixwell1983 6 лет назад
Lantern Lab thanks for the quick reply. If I cant find a rod thatll work ill see about getting new caps or perhaps take a cap from another 220 i have and see if it will work. Then i can see if its the tube or cap and replace the part(s) accordingly.

I don't think you can really go wrong. I've heard of folks using as little as 1 tablespoon of crystals per gallon of water, I use closer to 5. Heat the water so the citric acid will dissolve better. Hot citric acid works faster but I'm not in a hurry and I'm prone to forgetting things...

Depends on the exact year, there were a couple different ones. For the darker green I like dark hunter green krylon. I like how krylon flows better than Rustolum although since I've started heating the can in warm water there might not be much difference. I didn't paint anything this year.

So I recently got a 1966 220E/F(it says both on the bottom of tank) and I want to use it but the pump cap wiggles. Also, the inside of the tank cap is green and the tip cleaner lever is difficult to turn. Would just replace the fuel pump and generator be short term solutions to having it run or would I have to dissemble it, clean it out, maybe replace some things, and reassemble?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 8 лет назад
The pump isn't exactly a precision device. I presume you mean the cap that holds the pump in place, its retained by just a spring wire so some movement there is normal. I find most lanterns I buy work just fine, even with the generator they came with...
@tigertank06
@tigertank06 8 лет назад
Lantern Lab Yeah, the cap that holds the pump in place is what I meant. Maybe I'll just drain whatever is in the tank first and then fire it up. Would the difficulty in turning the tip cleaner be of any concern?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 8 лет назад
Yes, don't force it or you'll end up like my 228E. Take the generator off and drip a little oil in there, see if that helps, you might drip some on the shaft of the tip cleaner too. If neither of those help pull the tip cleaner and investigate further. Actually as I think of it you might loosen the packing on the tip cleaner just slightly and see if that helps. If you do loosen it keep an eye on it for leaks.

The issue I am having with one of mine is the valve turns stiff and it works on and off flares up then it starts working. My guess is the valve in the tank is crapped up. Time for a harbor freight impact driver..
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
A little flare when they start is normal, maybe add a little seafoam gas additive to a couple tanks. A cap-full is plenty, don't get crazy. Sometimes a drop of oil on the valve stem will help loosen a sticky or stiff valve. Otherwise maybe loosen the nut on the backing. Loosen it very slightly, 1/16 turn or less. If it leaks tighten it back up...

Do you know how SHARP those cleaner rods are? I found out, just as I impaled 1 1/4 inches of my second thumb joint with mine. Oddly enough, it only hurt for a second.., It didn't go through. And being only 0.8 mm in diameter it hardly left a mark. SURPRISE!!!!!!

question for ya please sir? what do you use to clean-out the end tip part of a generator orifice? i have a generator on a 275 lantern (same gen as a 220 or 228) ... the wire tip of the needle is fine (not broken), but the orifice hole is stopped up. you can'r blow air through the orifice. the orifice hole is stopped-up (obstructed) with something. i attempted using a torch top cleaner tool, but it wouldn't work because the orifice hole is way smaller than the smallest torch tip cleaning rod/tool. do you have a secret? that's all that's wrong... the orifice is stopped-up - the generator is fine other than the orifice being stopped-up and the wire tip of the generator needle is fine too. thank you, martina

i meant, "torch tip cleaner tool".

Heat it and let it cool, might break up whatever the schmoo is. Very gently poke it with the tip cleaner. Soak in a mild acid like vinegar might help too.

i'll give all of that try. i'm looking at a metal wire bread tie.... i might try that, too? thanks

To get something thin enough you're going to need piano wire. Maybe a thin guitar string? I doubt theres a carb cleaning rod small enough.

Will a Coleman lantern work using denatured alcohol as fuel?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
Yes but. Alcohol has way less energy per volume so you'd need to have a much larger gas tip. Also alcohol doesn't release fumes like camp gas so you'd need to preheat. I remember that somebody on the Coleman Collectors forum did a bunch of experimenting some time ago, you could search on there if you're interested.

Uh oh. Just say someone filed the generator hole in the air tube on a 220F-228F a little bigger because it seemed asymmetric, and it was really difficult to get the generator in there. Now the generator goes in easily, but there is clearly space between the generator and the air tube. Now, I know this area isn't sealed airtight, but I put the feather part of a feather duster next to this area, and opened the valve. The feather was definitely pulled towards the space between the generator and air tube. I did this feather test with an undefiled 220F-228F, and there was no such suction. It seems like this could create a bad incident, what with the possibility of igniting fuel getting dragged into the air tube?

There is always a space there, I've never tested with a feather but I wouldn't be surprised to see what you describe. You can get a flame in that location if the lantern floods when lighting or if the airtube gets plugged but in normal operation i wouldn't worry about it. Give it a try and see what it does.

Works just fine now! Death to propane! Death to battery-powered flashlights made to look like lanterns! Yiyiyiyiyiyi!!!

Instead of the trick with the wrench, bent iron, and screwdriver bit you could just use a $5 right angle screwdriver.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
Problem is that with a flathead screw you can't get at it half the time. You'd need two right angle screwdrivers with the heads offset 90 degrees.

maybe I'm missing something, but when you remove the cap( where the fuel goes in), do you have to loosen that little screw? mine doesn't want to come off. The cap looks like its caked with something. And what is the purpose of that little screw?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 7 лет назад
You only have to remove the screw to get the insert inside the cap out, the cap should come off with the insert still inside. Sometimes the rubber gasket bonds to the filler neck so maybe taking out the screw and taking the outer cap off will work, you could then use a soft hammer to gently knock the inner bit off. See my fuel cap gasket video for more detailed information.

I found your video about the fuel cap gasket, thanks. Now could I use the fuel cap off a later model that doesn't have a screw on gasket. Thanks again for your info

Just as a safety tip to everyone out there. Not checking to see if your Lantern has fuel in it or pressure in it is just like cleaning your firearm without checking to see if it's loaded or not.

oh WTfrig, how am I going to take all this apart and clean it (of course it doesn't light) I don't have all those special tools to remove all that caked on rusted on grimed on nuts/screws and bolts! For $49 I can go out and buy a new one and save myself 400 years extra in purgatory for all the swear words I will invent!

Check out my 275 video, I took that one apart with only a crescent wrench. I did need a 4way tool (less than $5) to remove the schrader valve.

For the sealant for the valve use thread sealant not thread locker or you might never get it off again
