After the success of the 220 kerosene conversion I thought it might be fun to try a single mantle lantern. This is actually easier to accomplish because the Coleman 201 is essentially a 200A with a different generator and fuel pickup.
If you missed the 220 conversion you can check it out here: • Converting a Coleman 2...
Do you have an idea for a Lantern Lab video? Post it in the comments and maybe your idea will make it into a video

The primary reason ive converted a few to Kerosene is that in addition tobhaving mutiple fuel options, kerosene fuel have a much longer shelf life. Great videos.

Love the video. Coleman fuel is $48 a gallon here and jet a is 8$ a gallon. So I want to convert all my lanterns and stoves possible to kerosene. Any other coleman stoves and lanterns you convert to kero I'll watch !

Great video. I still feel that putting a straight pickup on a kerosene lantern makes for a better burning lantern. Also, I recently discovered that a 201's burner tube doesn't have the constricting lip just before the burner cap like the 200 burner tube has. I'm not sure what this choke point does for the 200 vs the 201 but I used a 3/8 drill bit and drilled out the choke point on my 200 tube on my conversion. That along with the straight pickup and I don't have any smell at all when burning indoors. I can get JetA at my local airport for much cheaper than I can buy Crown Camp Fuel. Having a kerosene lantern is much cheaper for me to run than a white gas lantern.

For the straight pick up, did you remove the rod in the fuel pick up and block the top hole?
@joshuaharrington6094
@joshuaharrington6094 Год назад
@@budwhite9591 You can try that but there's no guarantee that it won't leak air at the crimp just below the threads. I found 3/16th brass tubing at Lowes and just soldered in a piece directly into the bottom of the valve. That way I know there's no leaks.

i converted a 290 using a 639 generator. runs pretty good.
@timlong1462
@timlong1462 Год назад
This is great to know. I read somewhere else this was possible, but after ordering parts I saw conflicting opinions if the 639 generator base is the same as the 290 stock tube made to burn white gas. I have a 290, and ordered the 639 and 639 preheat cup. Did you have to do anything else in order to get it working?

I 201’d my 200a ages ago when I rebuilt it. At that time I sealed the U-tube slip joint with a little muffler mender. It runs in my garage or house with absolutely zero smell, exactly the same as my 237.
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs Год назад
If you go back and look at my 200A rebuild video I also used muffler mender. The U tube is definitely a smell source on these lanterns.

Good video. I like doing the conversions. They are fun. I put the 201 burner tube on and a straight pickup tube on several 200’s. Made an all red “201” with a 201 valve as well as all the other different parts. Can’t really tell a difference. I’ve converted a 288 and it runs really well. Not too bright but good enough. Kinda like me. Lol. Bought one of the “phil captain” conversion kits on eBay from Taiwan. Well made but takes a lot of fine tuning to get right. Pricker rod is two piece threaded together and you have to get the length right for it to work right. Nice thing is you can easily change them back to original.

Where does one get the heater cups?
@joshuaharrington6094
@joshuaharrington6094 2 года назад
Old Coleman Parts or Amazon. The reproduction 201 cups from Old Coleman Parts are very nice and fit the 201 generator better than the modern cups from Coleman. The modern Coleman cups fit the larger 639 generator best but can be used on a 201 gen. They just fit looser than the repop cups from OCP.

Anyone running a 288 or 290 on kerosene? How do the adjustables handle the kerosene and are they able to adjust the light output or would that make them run too cold?

I've got a video on making a preheat cup. The one I made I just didn't get the hole close enough to the side for the 200. If you want to buy them Old Coleman parts has one specifically for the 201

how bout a kerosene alcohol blend?

Why? Alcohol would reduce the energy of the mix, what would be gained?

201 also has the Fuel/Air tube with no air hole in the font… I’ve also been running diesel in mine and it’s been ok. And lastly, gasoline works well in place of Coleman fuel with only slightly more carboning of the generator…
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 2 года назад
If there's no air hole it's not a fuel/air tube since there is no air. That's just a fuel pickup.

How well do these lanterns burn Coleman Fuel after they have been converted to kerosene?
@timlong1462
@timlong1462 Год назад
I think you would need to put the white gas generator tube back in in order to get it working right. Once you've done it a few times removing the tube on these only takes a few minutes. That's why I don't understand people so against burning regular unleaded or converting these. They're so easy to work in. You're about 10 minutes tops from burning one fuel to the other, or removing and cleaning all your parts. You can tape your old generator tube to the inside of your case to always have it on hand.
