This video shows how to disassemble, inspect and reassemble a Constant Velocity (CV or Birfield) Joint. If we can ever assist you in any of your off-road needs log on to www.lowrangeoffroad.com or call us at 801-805-6644.
This means the constant velocity (CV) joint is bad. You could either replace the CV joint or replace the entire shaft. In either case you usually have to remove the entire shaft. You should price both. Sometimes the shaft is about the same price as the joint, in which case I'd go with the shaft. We have not made a video to show how to remove the replace the shaft, but I suspect someone has. Simply do a search on RU-vid and you will probably get a good one. If that does not work, you might check on websites like Auto Zone or Oreiley's for some good instructions. Good luck with it and thanks for watching and commenting.
Looks like a decent informative video, and all the other comments are positive, and I'm no AWD expert, but does anyone else cringe when he hits the bearings with a (hard) drift...shouldn't that be with a brass or alu drift?...the hammer didn't look especially "soft" either!
Now that I think of it I have to say that my CV joints are 32 years and 280000 km old. New joints may be very tight and very hard to work with. I don't know to be honest.
Thanks for the video definitely helped me but one question I have is would a brass punch and hammer be a better choice? Watching you installing it by hammering on the ball with a steel punch, did it not leave a flat spot?
That is a good question. These parts are super hard. We took this joint apart several times with these tools and there was not sign of any damage at all. We have tried brass and found that brass flakes and chips off leaving little pieces of brass inside the joint and they are almost impossible to clean out. So we recommend using steel tools. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
Throw away society all in the name of greed (but disguised as efficiency and warranty security). Manufacturers = Financially Wins as it gets to sell you more than you need (whole assemblies) increasing profits Mechanics = Financially Wins by having a higher Profit margin on top of more expensive whole assemblies. Wins again as the fix is faster (ensures profit consistency per job). Customer = Financially Loses due to paying a lot more for buying whole assemblies. Environment = Loses due to more pollution manufacturing and more pollution as land fill
As a mechanic while I agree rebuilding is a good thing to know how to do, in certain situations like cvs it’s usually actually cheaper for the customer to replace the unit rather than getting it rebuilt so to the extra cost of labour spent rebuilding. If doing it yourself then definitely rebuilding is much cheaper
The Joint and rebuild parts are manufactured by RCV Performance and available from WWW.LOWRANGEOFFROAD.COM. Thank you for watching and for the question , If you have any other questions let us know at sales@lowrangeoffroad.com
Mine outer bearing racer was broken.New assy of CV joint axle cost almost eighty thousand Indian rupees in India.Only that outer bearing racer/cone is what i need. Can you help me to find what i need for my truck Tata 407 4x4.
How do you know which side is broken, the one to the wheel or the one to the transmission? I replaced CV Axles on 2001 Saturn SL2 like 1 - 1.5 years ago, and now it started to give a slight clicking noise on sharp turns to the right (when you basically go on the circle in clockwise direction). When the car goes straight, no noise, so I think it is the left (DS) CV Axle. Maybe I moved it too much on installation, maybe just such aftermarket part (though it is Cordona, seems like no complaints about them). So, if I remove that CV Axle, can I find out somehow which side of it has a problem? Or it is better to take apart both ends? Thank you for the informative film.
Won't it damage when tapping on the cage and the bolls at least even little bit. isn’t there any other way to push this balls in ? somehow this is very very excellent explanation and very clear sound and expressed it in attractive manner .
My question is, if a cv joint is mishandled and comes apart inside the boot, can it be reassembled whether the boot is left on or not? Or was that something that would damage components and need them replaced?
Hi low range garage, we do follow up all your tube videos me and my younger brother. Me and my younger brother we a garage on our own. But Your healthy support towards tools. like Jack stands, air wrench, hub seal tools etc. With thanks.
@@PUBLICIDADECOS if the cage is symetric .just reverse it..put inside to outside.. But if not..then just weld and re shape the inner side of the cage with grinder
I'm surprised no lubrication was used!!! Very interesting. Replaced an outer boot on my Honda today. Someone warned about balls falling out but that was never a worry for me. Must be worn as hell if the balls fall out. Mine was almost as tight as that one.
Sir, my car CV axle has a play and make sounds on both sides of the front car. I hold the CV axle firmly, pushing in and out. During this time, the axle makes a play movement about 1 cm with a bit of click sounds. There are no leaks or signs of worn in the bushings or rubber parts. Is this normal? And any danger in driving with this axle play? Would be please to hear a good solution Thanks
Saw this video last week and what i learned from here saved me yesterday. Replacing the axle on my Audi i removed a ziptie holding on the inner joint too early and the balls started falling out when positioning the axle. Cleaned and greased the balls and put them back in saving me a headache.
@@yamasubaruger I cut a section of the outer housing off. Then removed the balls and outer race. Then cut the inner race long ways on opposite sides without damaging the spine. New joint was about $60.
Put the shaft in a vice, far enough away from the end you're working on that you won't mar up the sealing surface for the smaller end of the boot. Use a cold chisel or piece of metal rod and large hammer and strike the inner hub/spyder piece. Don't be bashful, give it a good whack. Alternating sides that you strike on helps too.
Hi guys. Great video. However, what I don't understand is that when pulling apart a good working VB join / Birfield, the whole thing moves around nicely, but during re-assemby the Birfield seems to be very tight. How do we get this re-assemblrf Birfield to become as loose as the original?
Sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
@Gus Rohan i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
На Мерседес w202 наружный шрус также мучился. Лучше его не снимать. Если нормально работает. А проверить его можно: одной рукой привод держать, другой рукой шрус вращать если не болтается тогда нормально
Where do i get balls and housings? Here in germany it isn't common to repair like that although it is a great thing. I think that probably the work time is to expensive. If you search here at the auto part dealer you can only buy the whole axle. In some cases you can get the joints solo. But i don't know where to find balls, cages or other parts solo.
Yes, as long as the joint (balls, cage, race and housing) do not show wear. One of the main indications that a CV joint is worn out is that it will make a clicking sound while accelerating in a turn. If this is observed the joint is worn out and should be replaced. If there is no noise in turns and the only thing that is bad is a torn boot, the joint definitely can be disassembled, cleaned, reassembled and re-lubed. It does take more time, but depending on the cost of a new drive axle (or joint), it can be worth the effort. Thanks for watching and commenting.
i worked birfield manufacturing industry i need more knowledge abouts this cv joint i need some basics of materials types manufacturing methods and new models so u tells what are thing to refere to take full konoweldge about them
Its best the change the whole set then replacing the section shaft because it makes sound after a short while but changing the whole shaft last for years..
Your, using the hammer and the punch in serious places where u shouldnt use.like hammering the balls that will sure leave some damaged spots despite rigidity..i think better to use piece of wood
I Think you are a supper star. Can I ask a quick question . I bought a new CV join all shape and size are identical same amount of inner teeth but the teeth/grove slightly different shape the new one it had a v shape grove instead of a U shape grove and it seen 2mm smaller to fit to the main shaft. will it be ok to remove the old internal into the new one with the new bearing. The old CV join make click when turning corner as the rubber cover was damage with unknown time. any help thanks in advance.
is it possible to install the race upside down in the cage? i rebuilt my cv joints on my honda s2000 and there is a humming noise coming from the drivetrain now
