How to rebuild a water shutoff valve. In this video I show you how a water shutoff valve works and how to take it apart and rebuild the interior of it which sometimes will work as a fix for a small leak but not all the time so be ready to replace the whole thing.

Very helpful information! My toilet has a Fluidyne Ansonia shut off valve, and I was still able to use the BrassCraft Stem Repair Kit. Didn’t have to replace the whole shut off valve and NO MORE LEAKS!! Extremely grateful, thanks so much!! 👍

Thanks so much for this video... it saved me. I was having difficulty removing the shutoff valve, so I rebuilt it instead of removing it (with the water off, of course). It worked perfectly, all I needed was a new washer.

Very smart repair. I search online for the white plastic stem valve $3.11 each. I need 10 of them so cost me $31. but I ordered 10 shut off valves for just $19 from Amazon with multi pack sale that is just $1.9 each whole valve. and I removed the handle and plastic stem valve from new shut off valve just like he show on the video begin from 1 min. replace it to the old leaking stem valve. this save a lot of time for 10 valves plus I got extra10 new handles and saved $12 compare to just buy the stem valve

The good thing about this repair is that you can release trash from the valve at the same time and sometimes increase the water pressure lost to faucets over the years

A great product idea would be to replace those black stem washers with a more durable material, perhaps teflon. Those washers tear or rot out over time. I replaced 9 of those valves in the past 4 years and upon tear down and inspection 7 of those valves failed because of that crappy stem washer. The other two had corroded valve seats and it was just much cheaper to replace them with new shut off valves. Any way, looks like a common problem and this video was great.

I stripped out the plastic gear that connects to the handle, so I'll be attempting this repair tomorrow. I'm thinking the o-ring inside came off because I found pieces of it when I backwashed the cold water line to the faucet.

Just used this to fix my dishwasher connection. My bonnet nut is too shallow to have the rubber and nylon one. Sooo the old one only had a brass one. Fingers crossed, I’ll know in 5 minute if it’s leaking with just the nylon one.

Shouldn’t you also replace the washer at the back of the valve, where it connects to the water supply?

@alekmartin9999
@alekmartin9999 5 месяцев назад
Just replace the washer and the packing nut do swap from a rebuild kit. Keep the older brass fittings. Or another option is to replace just the washer with 00 washer from home depot or menards

@dalemihocik4732 yes that 00 fits ..you just have to force it when the washer is warm.

For the final step how tight do you use wrench to tight the nut? I hand tightened them and then have to use wrench to tight many turns before it’s stopped leaking. There are still some thread left but I am worried if they are over tightened.
@TomLeeman
@TomLeeman Год назад
Well, as long as it’s working and you don’t see any water you should be OK. Good luck thanks for watching.

I was thinking of replacing my multi-turn shut off valve (whose washer failed) with a quarter turn ball valve, but so long as the stem repair kit with washers is available, no way am I going to risk dealing with the inlet compression sleeve/olive connection. I just wish they sold these in bulk so I could replace all of them in the house and be good for another 25 years!
@TomLeeman
@TomLeeman 9 месяцев назад
It’s probably better just to buy brand new one and you don’t have to worry about them

Will I be able to unclog clogged shutoff valves? Water is not flowing at all from one sink. The valves look like soldering-type fittings, so removing them would require pipe cutting and resoldering. Can I clear out the debris clogging up the valves without complete replacements?
@TomLeeman
@TomLeeman Месяц назад
I have a video and how do use shark bites which is much easier way to replace these type of valves. Check it out and you can purchase them at any Home Depot or on Amazon Amazon. amzn.to/4aTvcZ8

I had to replace the washer two times on this thing and it still leaked. It finally stopped leaking when I put it together without the friction washer…. I wonder if that will cause trouble later.

One hint is to only screw the plunger rod in half way, vice all the way, before you tighten the nut. Otherwise, you could drive that gasket in too tight and it can bind up on the inside.

hmm? why didn't just use the new part attached to the valve and screw it on, instead of taking the new stem out of it, placing it in the new valve handle? Would it not screw onto the old on the pipe?
@TomLeeman

Good idea

Some of us have older cut offs where the stem is metal. I want to keep that metal stem because plastic teeth on the new ones get chewed up, and just use the new washers. I'm glad he fake rebuilt from scratch so I could see the order the washers go in.

U don’t show how u removed the old one . Struggled huh? I saw some spray like pb bluster, WD 40? And you don’t show when u put in the new one. That’s what I gonna do to my angle stop or valve bought a new assembly and remove the guts and put itbin. Cause the old one got have rusty handle and I can’t remove it probably If used pb bluster or wd 40 It might. What kind is the old one sweat( solder type) or compression?

Just needed the stem washer and no one sells it!! not even the kit, most likely the same size as 90% of them out there!! $$$ Always out of them go figure?? NO 35315B #31 TOP BIBB GASKET Danco Co. (not the best but works $1.00). I'm loading up on these from AC or H. Brothers. $100 vs 12 to $17 for a unit and $250 for a plumber Geeze!!
