How To Rebuild VVTi Cam Gear-Lexus Toyota | VVT-i Seal Replacement | DIY VVTi Gear Rebuild

Rebuilding the VVT-i cam gear on an IS300 2JZ-GE motor. This part isn't designed to be "serviceable" due to the laser alignment of the gear and sprocket but a few companies sell the O-ring needed to do the rebuild. Its an easy 10 minute job for most. This is a must when doing timing belt and water pump service.
You can remove the cam gear without taking off valve cover if you have a strong impact wrench that and bust it in one hit. Make sure to mark you timing on belt and gears.
I got the kit for like $13 plus $10 shipping from Drift Motion. It includes the viton rubber O-ring and the OEM seal washer for the outside bolt.
Also a few sellers on eBay for $16 (o-ring and washer) - ebay.to/3sQkmiy
O-ring only $6 - ebay.to/2ObePTG
If you are lazy and just want to buy a new one, $155 (Jan 2021) - ebay.to/2PHrYUU
A few tools to make life easier.
Hex Socket Kit with 14mm - 14mm/10mm Hex Sockets $15: amzn.to/2Fre3NV
Dewalt Impact Wrench: homedepot.sjv.io/qK23N

At 8:45 you mention a seal on the internal piece. That's a very important seal - if its compromised, the internal gears don't keep oil on the correct side of them and is the reason these gears wear out. It is a wearable part and is not available anywhere.

Do you know if this seal is "split" on purpose? I recently pulled my pulley apart and found this seal to be split but it appears to be in a very uniform diagonal way. My guess was this is normal as it allows the seal to be fitted/removed. I hope it's not broken otherwise I'm buying a new pulley and starting again 😢

Excellent video! Thank you for this. I have gotten this far to replace intake manifold gasket. My question what could be causing a rattle on start up in my 11’ is250? I have a rattle on startup for no more than two seconds. In one of your comments you mentioned that it happened to you but not to worry about? I don’t have any lights but the noise is horrible! Is this a solenoid issue or can gear problem? Thank you!

Normal for the 250 and 350 engines. The oil drains out of the VVTI gears and causes the rattle on start up until the solenoid charges the oil back up.

I have a misfire on all bank 1 cylinders upon starting. IAC within reference @27% , Installed New Vvti's and screens, all new vacuum hoses, and a used ECU. If I lay on the gas for about 15 seconds the misfire goes away and it purrs like a kitten from then on. 10 minutes later it does the same thing. All I have is an evap incompl, and 02 f/s incmpl following clearing codes. Could this cause that issue? Is it possible a cam sensor can cause this? I also read somewhere that in the ECU there are two transistors T1 and T2 that run the vvti's. Is it possible a transistor can be finicky when started? I'm ready to torch this thing. But unfortunately to my upmost frustration, oil has once again started to leak from the pulley area. I'm so annoyed that I'm gonna have to start all over again, or is it possible that the O-ring has just not seated properly and I'm still getting oil passing through the pulley? Bell Lexus? Do you live in Arizona?

No...I order all my OEM parts from them. Best prices on the internet, no tax, and free shipping over $100. They also have holiday sales every major holiday for 15% to 20% additional off their already reduced OEM online prices.

@@TunerwithKids why is the is350 recalled but the is250 Cam Gear rattle not??

All had the TISB for the rattle back when under warranty. All they did was replace with new VVTI gear but I suspect it would return. I didn’t get it since I didn’t want a tech to tear my head apart to replace. It’s just the oil drains out of the gear after not driving car for few days.

@@TunerwithKids My car runs like the first day I bought it. Except for the Cam Gear Noise ...recently sounds like Lifters or ROD bearings are about to blow up!! It’s a nasty rattle!

I’m about to go to Lexus and have them take a look at it and ask if Corporate Lexus of America can do something about it. I wonder what’s the cost to replace the Cam Gear. Any idea ?

Hello friend. I give you a thump down because you never showed the complete removal or installation of the VVT-i gear. It would help if you showed the positioning of the camshaft and completed the installion
