How to Receive Verification Codes Overseas (Like Bank SMS Texts)

Cheap US plan to receive SMS codes abroad: bit.ly/3PKRANl
1️⃣ Click on ‘Explore custom plans’ to find cheap texting only option (sometimes it's under the "Not Data Hungry?" section)
2️⃣ Use code DZLMPFK for extra discount (limited number available).
3️⃣ Use their help chat to help you set up your line and wifi calling. Note that the cheap plan looks like it's been increased to $6.
Holafly travel eSIM (discount link): bit.ly/3JIpSgw
Airalo travel eSIM (use code MITCH9827 for free credits): airalo.tp.st/1...
If you’re wondering how to receive SMS messages and bank verification codes while traveling, try this.
I’ve searched long and hard for ways to get bank codes abroad CONSISTENTLY without having to worry about getting locked out of my account, and this is the best solution I’ve found.
From my testing, receiving SMS codes while traveling has worked with both US phone lines as well as international lines.
Hope it helps!
UPDATE: Be very careful about doing software updates on your phone. When I did this on my iPhone, something automatically reset in my settings, which caused it to stop working. Depending on your home provider, this may not be fixable from abroad.

Heyo! Mitch and Day here 👋🏼
We’re just your typical American-Colombian couple determined to live every second of our precious time here on earth to the fullest. After a 10-month solo backpacking trip through South America, I (Mitch) stopped in Cali, Colombia to take salsa dancing classes 💃🏻. I only planned to stay for a couple weeks, but God had other plans for me. I met a cute Colombian girl (Day) in class, those couple weeks turned into a couple years, and before we knew it...we were married 👰🏻🤵🏼
Now we’re traveling the world full time as digital nomads, supporting ourselves by working online 👨‍💻👩‍💻
Our goal with these videos is to inspire you to step outside your comfort zone, give you an inside peek at our crazy imperfect lives, and show you that you don’t have to be rich to live an extraordinary life...all you need to do is make the choice!

Hahaha yeah I didn't know what I was getting myself into! 😂 This worked for me, but if you wanna be extra sure, you can reach out to your provider and ask if it will work with their service. You can also run a test - just turn on wifi calling, then disactivate your cell service, then see if you can send and receive calls and texts still. If you can, then it should work (I think)!

You’re very welcome, it’s a pesky problem and I’m happy I finally found a solution! The only annoying thing with this strategy is you gotta be really careful not to accidentally turn off the wifi calling while abroad (our reset your settings). Because when I’ve done that in the past, I couldn’t turn it back on without making a trip home.

Well I think it works. I live in US, have US phone number (AT&T) and bike tour outside the US every year for 4 mo. As I'm preparing to do another bike tour through US winter and need security code verification from many sites like Amazon, financial, etc, I did not want to sign up for AT&T's internation plan which would cost me $10 extra each day added to my regular acct billing. So I followed your video, and here at home, I turned on WiFi calling on my phone turned on Airplane Mode, enabled WiFi on the phone, and tried logging into Amazon (I'd cleared all passwords in cache) which wanted to send me an OTP code. Clicked to send, and voila, it showed up in my messages (iPhone) and I was able to log into Amazon. So just hoping this will also work outside US when I am in Asia.
@ProjectUntethered

Theoretically it should! (At least it does for me!)
@ProjectUntethered

But whatever you do, don’t deactivate that line or toggle off WiFi calling while you’re outside the U.S., because it might not let you turn it back on from abroad

Thank you, besides turning on WiFi calling on phone, do we have to turn on Airplane Mode?
@IrmaoJoaoGraodeTrigo
@IrmaoJoaoGraodeTrigo 7 месяцев назад
@@hchicletsall you have to do is turn off your cellphone signal so you can test while still in the US. In theory if you still get the texts while only connected to WiFi (that is what they did with airplane mode, but you also have to turn WiFi on in airplane mode for it to work) then you should get your texts when overseas and only connected to the internet, not connected to your US cellphone companies celular signal.

Man I wished I seen this before I left Canada. Even if you think you are all set because you called your credit card company and told the about your travel plans, if you need to purchase anything online that requires you to enter the code they would normally send you, Not happening unless you planned ahead. I was lucky because not only does my Credit card have 2 option to receive the code and one that worked was my email, so there's that. But my other credit card didn't have that option. I'm 61 and still learning. Travel Safe everyone.

Another option is to find a provider that includes roaming but isn't too expensive. For example, US mobile came out with the Unlimited Starter plan that includes international data and you can receive the codes through roaming instead of wifi calling (although it's a little more expensive than the option I described in this video). Maybe there is something like that in Canada!

@@ProjectUntethered This may be really good news for some people.. Ive spent a few months in Sweden every year for for over 10 years, and i have FINALLY SOLVED THIS F#%&/ING annoying problem lol... I may have gotten really lucky but its worth trying for people it applies to: A few years ago I changed my t mobile plan to prepaid (not sure if they still offer that, but because I already had it T Mobile support said I can keep it and use with eSIM), so when I was abroad for a few months every year I simply paid the minimum monthly fee about $3-4 to not loose my number, and just refilled it every now and then, and when back in the states I paid like $60/month for unlimited data/text/calling. Been havign serious problems with banks etc ovet the years and The other day I wanted to give the eSIM thing a try so chatted with T Mobile support and told them I wanted to get an eSIM.. the guy was totally trying to sell me a $90/month plan as my best option, then went down to 60/month. I told him its not worth that kind of money to recieve 2-3 verifications texts per month. Looked for other options all day then decided to call t mobile support, and they just set it up with my current prepaid plan with NO PROBLEM. I have an unlocked iphone 13 that I bought in Sweden so maybe thats why it worked to set this up while already abroad. it was all fixed in 10 minutes, and Ive already been able to take care of several bank errands etc instead of arguing with them for hours on the phone every time I need to do something as simple as sending a Zelle transfer etc. Feel free to ask questions if I mssed any details, I know how stressful this can be.

If you turn your primary line completely off, then you won't be able to receive the texts/calls. Thanks, but your solutions don't seem to work so far as I can tell. Does one have to keep the original phone plan from your home country and somehow get the esim software to redirect the calls & messages (in which case it's double the price)? The data plans seem quite expensive and few seem to last for more than a month at a time cf. a local phone plan. Maybe these solutions work for travel of maybe a month or two, while keeping your same number from home (and then it would be cheaper than roaming plans from your local provider). But they're no good for a permanent virtual (mobile) number solution.
@ProjectUntethered
@ProjectUntethered 9 месяцев назад
Yes the original home plan for me costs $5 per month. And the local data plan (or travel eSIM) depends on where the country is you're traveling and the plan you choose - but this is an expensive that most travelers pay for anyway. So the only difference really is the $5/month plan you have running in the background from home. The calls and messages come through when you have wifi calling turned on your home line. I've been using this solution for years, and have not found a cheaper way to receive the bank codes consistently.

You should be able to set it up and leave the same day. That said one big issue with this strategy that I just discovered is that if you do a software update on your phone while abroad, it might automatically deactivate the wifi calling and essentially “break” the strategy. This happened to me recently, and the easiest solution I found was to switch my plan to their unlimited plan that includes international data. I was able to do this without having to go back to the US (although only messages work, I think you’d need to go back to US to get calls to work). You could ask their customer service chat if this is a possible solution to set up if you don’t yet have an eSIM with them (I already had one but not sure if that makes a difference). It’s not as cheap as the $6/month method I mentioned in the video, but it might be better than flying all the way back to the U.S. switching plans also solved a problem I had on my iPhone of the battery draining too fast. Hope this helps!

@@aviverma5531we had to go to the US for other reasons too, but yes it is a very expensive trip. The thing is that when someone send a phone from the US to Brazil it gets tax arriving here like 100% of its value, it’s insane. It is not worth it.

Would be easier to put your phone on Roaming before leaving. Then when abroad always leave your phone on Airplane mode and remove the airplane mode temporarily when you are expecting a verification code.

I wish you explained this more clearly. I still can't receive my OTPs and I have international roaming. I therefore need to turn airplane mode off to receive them which costs loads.

Just ridiculous. Who is in the home country has just to switch on push notifications to receive codes from the bank via data. No phone number needed. I’m in the boat that I need a Canadian or US e-sim for a month only. If I can receive the code, I just can switch to my push notifications on my banking app. Still searching….

The only consistent way I’ve found is to use a normal US carrier (can be a physical sim as well) with wifi calling turned on. You don’t necessarily need an eSIM for it to work. The codes should come through if you’re using wifi as well. If you don’t have a dual SIM phone, that would mean you wouldn’t be able to get a data plan in the country you’re living in. In that case, you could also just buy a cheap flip phone and use it solely to receive your codes. I usually do this as a backup Plan C 🤓

I would contact your home carrier to ask them, as it might be different with each carrier. For me, I just have to make sure wifi calling is turned on with my home line before I leave my country.

I'm not super techy guy, but basically let's you receive texts/calls on that line as long as you have an internet connection (whether that be through wifi or data from your travel SIM/eSIM. Make sure to turn it on before leaving the US and don't turn it off while you're away.

Also wanted to point out that only some of my texts came through on my iPhone while I was away (not the case with WhatsApp - that wasn't a problem) - when I landed back in NY, about 35 additional texts came through all of a sudden. Wish I understood why some came through while I was away and a bunch more didn't show up till I landed switched off the eSim and went back to my primary.

Your roaming function on your US cell line was probably off (as it should be) when traveling abroad. SMS or texts protocol is different from iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber, etc. All your SMS messages were held by your US provider and just waited until you turned on your US cell line (or until you reached your Home region since Roaming was likely disabled) before being delivered to your phone. That's my understanding.@@StevenBrener

You will probably need dual sim capabilities, many modern phones allow you to use an eSIM as a second or third line even if they only have one SIM card slot.

Hello. :) I live in Canada and plan to travel to Greece. If I use Wifi calling to receive messages from my canadian bank and/or make/receive phonecalls to/from Canada, am I going to be charged for roaming fees? Thanks in advance!
@brandonholm5812
@brandonholm5812 5 месяцев назад
No you won't be charged roaming fees if you're using wifi calling to make/receive calls since it would work as if you were still in Canada. The only thing is, that Bell and Telus and their sub brands block wifi calling while abroad. If you're on Rogers or one of their sub brands, or with Freedom Mobile, you can use wifi calling abroad.
@barbhiggins
@barbhiggins 5 месяцев назад
I am with Rogers, I went to wifi called setting and read terms. Turning it on triggers “roam from home”, so you are paying their daily charge for international calling ($15/day) if you switch on wifi calling. So if you have to use wifi calling to verify, you might as well just turn on roaming and pay their daily fee, and skip wifi calling
@brandonholm5812
@brandonholm5812 5 месяцев назад
@@barbhiggins that’s not correct. I frequently use WiFi calling with Rogers abroad and never pay a roaming fee. You just need to be careful you don’t accidentally make or answer a call while not connected to WiFi calling. I just go to network selection and ensure the phone can only connect to the Rogers network before leaving Canada which basically makes it impossible for the phone to roam accidentally.
@brandonholm5812
@brandonholm5812 5 месяцев назад
@@barbhiggins I just looked at the terms. It just specifies that calling a non-Canadian number will trigger a roaming/long distance charge. With WiFi calling, your phone works as if it’s in Canada, so you can only call Canadian numbers.
