In this video I show you a quick technique on how to use the French Edge tool to create recesses in your leather project. This is great to use when the post on your snap, rivet, or grommet, isn't long enough for you to set the hardware.

Great technique. I wish I had seen this a few days ago: I had to improvise and do something similar for some snaps for my drawknife's sheath. I'm primary a woodworker, so I made due with a chisel.

This is a great method for putting hardware in thick leather. Thank you for watching & your comment!

Looks like the grommet area is now very weak in the cut away zone...so is there no mechanical pressure through the grommet?

No not at all. All the strength is in the grain side of the leather which we didn’t touch.

What jeweler's rouge do you use? What does the rouge do? I bought the white from Tandy. I have tried to soften it but as soon as I try to put on cardboard if hardens.

Thank you for watching and for your question. Rouge is used in stropping your leather tools. To use, rub a good bit over a piece of cardboard or thin leather. The act of stropping polishes your tool giving it a sharper cutting edge. I also use the white rouge from Tandy, but also have green. I cannot tel a difference in how either polishes the tools.

How do you know what size tool to use? What is the size in your video?

Thank you for watching the video and taking time to leave a comment. French bevelers are a little different than the normal leather working tools you're used to. For instance with an edge beveler you need a specific size to match up with a particular thickness of leather this is not necessarily the case when using a French edging tool. These tools come in different widths, but these widths do not directly correlate to what thickness of leather that you're going to use them on. For instance if you are going to be skiving an edge down like what you see me doing with the credit card slot; the difference in one that's 1/4 inch versus a 1/2 inch in width is literally the width of the leather strip that will be removed each pass. The width of the tool does not determine the depth the tool can go if that makes sense. Let me know if you need any further clarification. Now with that being said if you are trying to do a 45-degree edge cut, then the width of the blade will matter as the blade will need to be wide enough to encompass the thickness of leather you are trying to cut. If this does not make sense please let me know and I will do a follow-up video to try to demonstrate this better.

@@MichaelMaysLeatherworks Thank you. I'm wanting to use the beveler to make a snap fit in a leather bracelet.

The Crafttool French edger from Tandy leather will work just fine for that. That is what you see me using in this video. This will work for line 20 and 24 snaps.
