This is *exactly* the issue I was running into when I was working with lightweight leather for wallets. I just ordered a French beveler. Thanks!

Thank you Bud for the kind words. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment on my videos. I have plans for more videos it's just finding the time to sit down and get them done as my full-time job is as an IT engineer.

Thank you for watching and for the comment. I have a new video I'm working on. Using the French edger to recess snaps or rivets in thick leather. i'm hoping to have it up this weekend.

Thank you Bart for your comment and watching the video. I think French edgers are a very underutilized tool.

I use this on my small thin pieces. I just bought a mechanical hand skiver from amazon and it works pretty good but I do not trust myself with 2/3 oz yet. These simple videos are the best tools for people who have not used them before. I ha e been at this since 1987 and I still find tips here 👍Michael

My comment was short. Sometimes I get a brain feaze and I can’t figure shit out. It was a great video and helped me immensely. Come to New Orleans and visit.

Thank you. Your French edger doesn’t look very sharp though.

would a leather planer work ?
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks 2 года назад
Personally, i’ve never tried. I have seen them used in videos and they seem to do ok. Anything you get be ready to put in the training time so you don’t mess up a project. speak from experience!

Awesome! I hope this method works great for you. Get back with me and let me know what kind of results you get. If this planer doesn’t work out I have a Japanese skiving knife on the way from GoodsJapan.com that i’ll be doing a review video on. Everyone says if you want to hand skive there is nothing better than a Japanese skiving knife. I thought 💭 hmmm bold statement! Lets put that to the test. So i’ll give my overall first impressions, touch on quality, sharpness, feel in the hand, and then discuss edge durability, ease if use, and simply is it worth your hard earned money 💰. I will also do a side-by-side test with the Japanese skiver from GoodsJapan against a cheaper skiving knife I purchased off of Amazon. Keep in mind I use the products for at least a few weeks before making my videos that way I have the opportunity to use it on various different projects and give you guys an honest review.
