Midi is data (not sound). So these ports are used to transfer data between two different equipments. For example, you can play on the keyboard and transfer what you are playing on a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Cubase That way you are transferring each and single note, along with it's length, duration, Pitch Bend changes, Modulation Wheel changes etc. Like creating a digital sheet music. Afterwards you can change anything you want on your pc. (Each note is easily editable on your DAW now). Of course as long you are not transferring any actual "sound"(voices), now you will use the "voices" that your DAW has and not the voices of the SX900. Keep in mind that every single voice is written on a different midi channel, so you will have by default two channels for the drums(of the style), one channel for the bass(of the style),one channel for your right-hand 1 voice, one channel for you left-hand voice etc. So you can have up to 16 different channels in default for just one recording. (16 "sets" of sheet music like the sheet music a classical orchestra conductor has for every different kind of instruments). Of course, you can add more channels on another recording or record one by one each time. Another use is to connect a digital piano (or any other digital instrument) with the SX900 and while you are playing on the 88 keybed of your digital piano, the "voices" that you will use and hear will be those of the SX900.
