This video is part 1 of 2 on how to make artificial light look natural in your food photography. The KEY is always CORRECT OBSERVATION of ambient light first before taking out your flash and creating your own lighting setup with it, so in this video I take a closer look at 3 main types of natural light and will recreate the light in the next video of this series.

I love this look, but for years I've struggled to get it. I know all of the principals associated with achieving it, but when I apply them to my photography I end up with blown out highlights or crushed shadows whenever shooting in direct sunlight like this. The only change I have is when it's overcast and that's when lighting is flat an uninteresting. What metering modes are you guys using to get balances exposure with such high ambient contrast? I don't get it.

So will ambient hard light on the orange increase texture by having more local contrast between the specular highlights and shadows? A moister look to the pulp?

I think so! Of course also, depending on the angle at which you shoot relative to the light source.
