How to Reduce Noise Like a Pro in Photoshop CC

ACR Noise Reduction + Blend If = Awesome!
There are many ways to do the same things in Photoshop, why would Noise Reduction be any different? From Adobe Camera Raw to the Reduce Noise filter there are several options for getting rid of those pesky High ISO annoyances. While you may be doing everything right to reduce your noise, have you ever considered using Blend If?
Maybe you have, and maybe you have tried using Blend If but then wrote it off because of its seemingly random nature. Blend If, in the Layer Styles, can be very useful for Noise Reduction, but it can also be difficult to see where the effect is being applied as you use the sliders.
The other day I was in Photoshop adjusting some masks, and I really liked that I could either press ALT (OPTION on Mac) or the \ key to see where my mask was affecting the image. I wanted to replicate that with Blend If, but I couldn't quite figure it out. That is until I combined a Clipping Mask with a Color Fill Layer.
The Clipping Mask is a layering technique in Photoshop that tells the layer you have selected only to apply itself to the layer directly below it. It is very powerful in compositing as you can make one mask and apply many effects to the layer via Clipping Masks.
With Noise Reduction, you can do something very similar. In this tutorial, I will show you how to make an extreme noise reduction technique, and then only apply it to the shadows. While I show you this technique, I will also show you the Clipping Mask ad how effective it can be when you want to see exactly what your Blend If adjustments are affecting in your photograph.

Excellent video! I have been watching your videos for a few months now and I can say that you have become one of my favorite tutors. I appreciate your style, your delivery and most importantly how you make the subject matter very doable even in its sometimes complexity...that is not an easy thing to do! Kudos to a great teacher and a seemingly great person.

I know I'm late to the party... but this is the best noise reduction tip I've seen. It actually worked (which a lot of them don't seem to for me), and still left the rest of my image crisp. And I could see exactly what was being adjusted. Thank you!

A tip for those still using CS6 and thinking this technique doesn't work, it can! If you group the layer, then apply the colour layer as a clipping mask to the group (instead of clipping directly to the layer), it works as shown in the video.

Awesome! Love those Blend If tricks of yours, they're really an eye opener! I will however use a "color overlay" layer style with a magenta color tone instead of the solid color layer. As I'm already inside the layer styles panel for configuring the Blend If settings it's easy to simply activate the "color overlay" effect and set a magenta color (the default red should also work in many cases). Saves me some clicks and I get away with a less cluttered layers panel.

Just tried the tutorial, used a terrible noisy shot taken in virtual darkness iso25600. I don't use ACR for noise reduction but the Define plug in. Made no difference to how well the system works. Gives so much more subtle control. Also used the opacity slider after the final curves layer. Wonderful stuff, thanks again.

It seems that your zone system equals Ansel Adam's zone values. I used that in film, and it helps as a starting point in digital manual exposure settings.

Very much so. I read all of his books to understand the Zone System before I built my digital version.

Genius! Can this method be used to isolate sharpening also? I customarily use a highpass overlay layer to sharpen and apply blend-if to subtract the effect in the darks and whites. But admittedly the guessing is difficult.
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 6 лет назад
Absolutely. I usuaully use Blend If on the opposite side though, so if you use NR for shadows, use sharpening for mids and highs

Blake , what is the difference between this method and using the "Color Overlay" option of the layer style dialog window?
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 7 лет назад
Not much really, the Layer Style would be best if you want to keep that overlay "stuck" to that layer. The Color Overlay adds another layer to the mix with a Clipping Mask, practically the same thing, but some people may not understand Clipping Masks or want another layer in their panel.

Awesome video. can you do a video on how to sharpen with the high pass filter without adding noise to sky's in a landscape photo?
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 8 лет назад
It sounds like a very specific issue. you may want to try adding a mask for the sharpen layer and painting the sky with black to protect it from the sharpen.
@egon10psi
@egon10psi 8 лет назад
Won't that leave a noisy edge between the sky and the land?

@jburch5752
@jburch5752 7 лет назад
Did you do the noise reduction in raw after you duplicated the photo layers and before you added the colored layer? Do what Balke did but just don't make the luminance as strong as he did. Then go and make the colored layer. As he said, the colored layer will show you where the adjustment is taking place. If you don't want it over the entire photo then on the first photo layer add a mask.
