In the age of incredibly high ISOs and camera sensors that seem to get better by the day, noise and grain are not nearly as much of a problem as they used to be, but when you need some help turning down the grain or noise in your photos there are some great options in Photoshop. We’ll talk about the subtle noise reduction that Smart Sharpen has available, how to use Reduce Noise with the Blend If sliders to get a great mix of noise-reduction only in the areas that we need it, and also the very useful and powerful noise reduction tool in the Camera RAW editor and how you can use that on any photo you have in Photoshop (even if it’s not a RAW image.) Check out this tutorial and I hope you love it!

Awesome technique. I never considered using a blend if slider in this way. Love your suggestions. Theyre not just the run of the mill "explaining how to do this" tutorials. They're unique and very helpful form a productivity standpoint.

Thank you, this was useful. Do you know if the Camera Raw noise reduction does a better job than the noise reduction in Lightroom? They appear to be the same sliders. I don't use Camera Raw; mostly Lightroom; am learning Photoshop - which is why I love your videos! Thanks again.

One thing I would add to the camera raw method, crank that masking slider way up, hold the Alt key (or mac equivalent) to see what its actually doing in black and white. What this does is help isolate the edges for sharpening. The value will vary depending on the image but 70% is a good starting point.

I smashed that button! Yes! :-D BTW: Which camera do you use at the moment? In the video you talked about the EOS 3200D or EOS 4000D but the one on your table wasn't either.

Canon 5D MK III is my camera of choice at the moment. Nikon d750 is another fav of mine (especially for the money and the low-light capability!)

Great choice - I looked out for that camera but had great experiences with EOS 30D and 6D - better than I thought! If you need to change give the 6D a view ;-)

Is it possible to use noise reduction only on a specific are om the picture? (for example with reduce noise filter) And how can you do that?
@pancake8133

Duplicate the image to new layer, apply the noise reduction of your choice to the duplicate image, then create a layer mask over the areas you don't want reduced to show the original image in the layer underneath

Thanks for the tutorial. TutVid 3 best ways to Reduce Noise/Grain in Photoshop ... Good ...Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen -Smart Object first ... Better... Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise -Smart Object first Rasterize first/Duplicate Blend if > with original lower layer … Protect Highlights (if noise is more in shadows area) or Protect Shadows (if noise is more in highlights area) ... Best ... Filter > Camera Raw > Sharpen (Reduce Detail) > Noise Reduction (Luminance etc., Color Noise/Detail/Smoothness Combine all if needed

Don't forget that you can use the mask slider to not sharpen the skies and reduce noise in the skies and areas without a lot of detail that way by not enhancing it in the first place. ;-)

Sometimes playing with the shadows and brightness can make some noise reduction too
@BoomerKeith1
@BoomerKeith1 8 лет назад
That works really well in combination with a duplicated layer and some masking. The Camera Raw Filter though, is probably the best way to address noise in PS now.
