Silent rehearsals : Here is my summary on how to do silent rehearsals with your band.
What you'll need (affiliate links below):
- Electric drum kit (we use a Roland TD-30 or Roland TD-1)
- Bass DI (We use a DI box or XLR to jack lead)
- Guitar amp with Digital output (we use an orange micro dark or boss katana)
- The same headphones for every band member (we use Beyerdynamic Dt150)
- Dynamic mics all round (we use the Shure SM58)

I'm just getting back to playing drums after about 40 years. (yea I'm old) I'm thinking of getting a small mixer just to jam with my neighbor. What's a good smaller mixer and also you were saying your getting a lot of noise from the drums and I think you said strings going into the mics couldn't you record all the instruments and then later add just the vocals? Thanks and great video.

I suppose any mixer would do that has enough inputs for your needs. The one I’d recommend (although not that small) is the Behringer Xenyx 2442, just because I had that for over ten years and it could do absolutely anything I wanted, live and in the studio). It also has built in reverb so it makes things sound nice For vocals, use a dynamic mic like an SM58 so it doesn’t pick up much background noise. If you check out my Christmas song, Last Door To Open, that’s a live take with vocals overplayed and other instruments on top. Gives you an idea of what you can easily achieve

Strange, I have yet to find someone doing silent rehearsals with a Zoom mixer/recorder like the Zoom L-8, L-12 or L-20. I'll keep searching but it seems to me that the ability to have separate headphone mixes (5 distinct mixes for the L-12) is a real advantage. I know I want to hear my guitar more than the singer wants to hear my guitar... for example. Great video, by the way! Thanks for your insight.

Could you use a Heaphone Amp to do a silent practice? Like run my Alesis Strike and my guitarist headrush into a mixer and then the main out into the headphone amp?
@PherotoneStudios
@PherotoneStudios 3 года назад
Exactly that. That’s what we do. Just get a good quality headphone amp as cheap ones can often overload easily

Great video. Now what else would we need in order to practice in the same fashion but to give everyone their own monitor mix through each of their headphones?

Each band member having their personalized control of each of the instruments' output in each of their own headphones? That's the dream.
@savds
@savds 2 года назад
That is very much possible with the X32 mixer, you run each headphone through the 16 (i guess) Aux outputs via a headphone amp and each member has their personal mix

Yes as someone else said the Behringer x32 can do that but you also need 1 behringer p16 mixer for each band member. Also the x32 is almost 4 grand CAD right now 😬

I'm 15 and are in a band with 2 of my friends. 2 guitar 1 on electric drums. How could I hook up so we could rehearse silently on the tightest of budgets? Do I just buy a mixer or do I need some sort of monitoring system. Any tips?
@PherotoneStudios
@PherotoneStudios 3 года назад
A mixer and headphones should do it. You may need a headphone amp as most mixers won’t have 3 headphone outputs

@@PherotoneStudios Thank you for answering! What about a headphone splitter cable? xD
@NightGlyde
@NightGlyde 3 года назад
@@Vaeren222 I'm no expert, but the issue with a splitter is there might not be enough energy/power/whatever to drive multiple sets of headphones. A simple headphone splitter would divide the power between three sets of headphones, so each would be much quieter (1/3) than if you had only one set of headphones. A headphone amplifier would amplify the signal, making it louder. Maybe a splitter would be enough, but if the headphones end up way too quiet you should probably get a headphone amplifier. (sorry I don't know the proper terminology. and really, I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm just making an educated guess) (perhaps you could talk to the people at your local music shop)

@@NightGlyde thanks a lot👍
@NightGlyde
@NightGlyde 3 года назад
@@Vaeren222 Actually I looked things up, and now I'm not sure if a splitter would affect the volume/quality or if it would work just fine. Again, you should definitely ask music shop people who actually know what they're talking about. Also, apparently an amplifier could let you control each set of headphones individually, in case one person wants it louder, one person prefers quieter, etc. But it might depend on how sophisticated the amplifier is.

Have you ever had an issue with your singer, in a "silent rehearsal" having huge issues with the format? Our singer, who is not very articulate with music jargon, just kept saying he wasn't feeling it... didn't like the vocals in his ears... couldn't work with it. Maybe his levels should go up or down, we haven't figured it out yet... but curious if you have thoughts...
@PherotoneStudios
@PherotoneStudios Год назад
Sort of. I’m the singer and when there’s a good mix and you can hear everything it’s fine. Years ago we couldn’t get a good mix and it was a real challenge. It was about 15 years ago and I can’t remember what was wrong
