In this video, we're gonna show you how to rekey step-by-step, a Ford ignition. This is a Strattec Ford Ignition kit #707624. The kit has all the wafers and pieces, so you can rekey the lock to the customer key. The Fords are so popular, they're in the top 10 stolen vehicles in Canada, if not North America. The Ford ignitions are constantly being attacked by car theives, so we are replacing lots of Ford ignitions.
In this video we are going to show how to put together this Ford ignition kit. This is probably one of the most widely used ignition sets, cars from 1996 up to 2012. It fits Rangers, Excursions, F Series, just about anything out there. We use Strattec. Strattec is a great quality part. There's almost no failures on it, and for Ford, GM, and Chrysler vehicles, they're the best. The kit comes with everything you'll need to code the cylinder.This is a Ford eight cut system. Eight cuts, refers to the number of wafers in the lock. You start counting from the bow, you go to the tip.
Typically on this cylinder, and on the vehicles that this fits, you're dealing with one to six cuts in the door, and you're dealing with two to eight in the ignition cylinder.
You can lubricate, open the package, and you can put some grease on the wafers. Make sure you've got it good and lubed up. The cylinder moves freely. The trickiest part of the whole operation seems to be getting the ball bearing to come down and depress in here.
You notice that in the Strattec kit they give you extra parts and two ball bearings. There's a good reason for that. Probably in about 60% of the cases, you're gonna lose one of them. So, what happens now, take out your ball bearings and don't lose it before you start. But, in here, this spring goes down. Okay, push it down and make sure it's firmly seated. Then, you've got to get a ball bearing on top of it, and you're going to depress the ball bearing and turn the cylinder at the same time. The spring goes into this hole. Make sure you've got it down all the way. Just kind of tap it down. The next thing is a ball bearing that goes down on top of the spring. Now, you've got to depress the spring and the ball bearing, and turn the cylinder at the same time. So, you press down, and you turn, and you'll notice right in here, there's the ball bearing. So you can turn your cylinder and you get it working positively. Your next part, this retainer goes back in. And you turn your cylinder to the position where the retainer goes down, so that you can reinstall your cylinder into the vehicle. You can see as you push it, turn it, that will pop up. So, if you look at the position here, you're never gonna get that into your column. Turn it, and you get the position correct, that will drop. And your cylinder turns perfectly.
In conclusion, Randy just showed you how to do step-by-step, the Ford ignition. This is a hugely popular ignition that we have to replace. I hope it was useful to you. Thank you, very much. This was great! I'm a diesel mechanic, and I've never keyed a lock cylinder before. Had always just ordered in 10 pre-made locks (if the dealer didn't have the code), and tried each one until it fit. This 2002 F250, I bought one from the dealer, and it came disassembled. I personally couldn't figure out the instructions, and this video allowed me to build this lock cylinder quite easily. This is how I'll start ordering all my ignition tumblers from now on, thank you!!

Thanks for the video. Several years back my ignition got to where it wouldn't work. So I replaced with a new lock, but that meant two keys. Rekeying finally let me get back to just 1 key for doors & ign. With the key being so old, 20yrs, I had to file the wafers just a hair to make it unlocked right. Thanks again for the video!

I have a 95 Thunderbird and i would love to know how to disassemble the cylinder so i can rekey it to another ignition i have, i have so far taken the outside of the tumbler off but i have to clue how to take the rest of it apart,basically i cannot access the area where the wafers are, I'm sure there is a trick to it like everything else.

im dealing with one these in a ford taurus that lost the keys...basically my only option would be to drill it out to get the ignition to turn to get it out? and then replace it altogether? or is there any other trick i could do to get the ignition to turn over so icould pull it outto rekey it at least? i tried picking it to maybe get lucky to get it to turn over but no luck and not really that much time....so basically all i can do is drill it out >?

I would have been more interested in removing and installing into the steering column. Do you have any videos of that?

Is it possible to disassemble my original cylinder to compare and confirm the correct wafer for my original key ? Great video that not only shows the steps but explains some of the reasoning of what is being accomplished and why. Saved me some money !

@@pouncerminned863 video better than the instructions. Took two attempts to get a spinning cylinder. List one ball bearing first go round. The true technical part was spinning the sleeve with depressed ball bearing to lock things together. Third hand would help. I had a perfect “cupped” tip screwdriver for the job. The new cylinder solved my many electrical issues from wonky taillights, no hazards, spotty turn signals, an unreliable start signal that was sensitive to position, and no key in cylinder alarm. I have factory function restored. I have two thumbs and they are both UP !

@@patrickmercado5284 awesome! I have to do one of these, I ordered this kit as the client removed his by drilling, so I cannot read the wafers as its destroyed. I have to lishi the door today to get 1-6 cuts then progression it to get the ignition cuts. Beats doing this and removing and installing on each door lock - those handles suck :( I hate dealing with the connector rods

So you can almost guess at wafer selection by looking at key. Wider or deeper wafer for deeper cuts in the key. Funny my key had many repeat wafers but I had enough of each to get it right. I used a hemo stat to pull and reinsert my wafers over the springs. One side at a time and keep reinserting key to see if wafers are level with cylinder. A tiny high or low will mess you up.
@pouncerminned863
@pouncerminned863 Год назад
@@patrickmercado5284 i used a tool called a lishi that picks the lock, then when its unlocked, the tool tells you which wafer number to use in each spot, that way you don't need to guess. The customer lost all his keys, so this was the way I went. I did make the key, and it turns in the door lock just fine. Now I am waiting for this ignition kit to arrive so i can put the wafers in it, build it up and install it in the ignition. I just have to program the key afterwards

Very helpful video. I've got a stupid question - is it necessary to put all of the wafers back in? Why not just put a couple of them in?
@24hrMrLocksmith
@24hrMrLocksmith 4 года назад
Ga Ad Yes, all Ford wafers need to be installed or other keys may open the lock (ghost keys).

I lost the larger spring, the one that goes with the ball bearing. Any ideas as to what size the spring is? Or a replacement part number? If I can't find one I'll need to purchase a new kit for one damn spring, bummer.

I was going to ask the same question.. I accidently damaged my spring. I am not sure if Ace would have an exact match.. or how exact it needs to be. Please let use know if you have any luck! I hope you got it resolved!
