How to Remove a Flywheel on a Johnson / Evinrude / OMC Outboard Motor

Pulling a flywheel on a vintage outboard motor is sometimes necessary for resolving ignition problems with points or coils which are located underneath the flywheel. Removal can be simple if you have the right tools. If you don't have the right tools, you will likely become frustrated, and you may even cause damage to your engine.
Key tools for the job are:
* Strap Wrench with a long strap
* Harmonic Balancer Puller
* Long-handled Socket wrench
Watch the video to see flywheel removal in two easy steps.

Thanks! I’m 13 and I finally can take the fly wheel off my 1948 5hp Johnson outboard. Thanks again!

I know some people disagree, but, you can use an impact driver to remove the flywheel (on the center bolt of the puller.) Some are easy to remove, some not. Same with most magnetos and flywheels on these engies, motorcycles, atv's, dirtbikes, etc.

I still gave you a thumbs up bud. Thanks for the help... I broke bolts from the wheel puller... so just so your viewers know you sometimes have to take the pulling bolt to max tension(before the puller bolts break) then hit the top bolt with a big hammer to introduce shock to it. That's a lesson the old man at the dock taught me over the phone here in Virginia Beach. 😎

Something I learned pulling my 27 year old 200 Johnson, only loosen the nut a couple of turns to keep it from coming off violently, add anti seize to the threads of the center of the puller (it keeps the threads from binding against the puller, only way I could get enough pressure on it), and you may have to give the center bolt of the puller a good tap to pop it off.

If you put the nut back on the crankshaft with about 1/16 inch clearance from the flywheel before wrenching on the puller, it will prevent the explosive release of the flywheel.

Just a tip for those that might not be aware of it, don't turn the flywheel counter clockwise because it could damage the water pump impeller.

if there are bolt holes in the fly wheel you can also use a wrench steel tube or rebar to undo the flywheel nut just hold it between the 2 bolst and set your tool for the nut so you can squeeze the 2 tools togetther an the nut comes off

I have a 1992 johnson 15 horse motor. I bought a power pack on Amazon that said it was the right size but the flywheel would not fit over it. Now I've bought another power pack from Sierra and still the flywheel will not seat when I line up the groove in the center of the flywheel. The old part is made a little different and it will fit. Is there a special procedure to get the flywheel to clear the power pack?

@highlandoutboards
@highlandoutboards 6 лет назад
We've seen that before. Yes, it's a woodruff key that holds the flywheel in alignment and transfers the driveshaft rotation to the flywheel. When its worn off, it can be a booger. Proceed at your own risk. We have had to use punches and ball peen hammers and various chisels to remove partial keys before. No foolproof recipe.

Hello, I have several old Evinrudes and Johnsons, but on two of these, a 1953 3hp and a 1961 3hp, the flywheel is really stuck. I've tried everything to get them of. I've tried a puller and on the '53 I tightened the puller so much I cracked the crankshaft of the engine. I've also tried the more simple methode, with a screwdriver prying the flywheel up and with a hammer tapping the crankshaft down. Neither of these methodes worked. Can you give me some tips?
@highlandoutboards
@highlandoutboards 9 лет назад
That sounds like a tough one. My best advice is to put the puller on the flywheel and torque it down as hard as you can. Heat the crank shaft with a blow torch -- theory being that the different expansion of the steel crank and the flywheel will help release the bond. While it's still hot, hit the stud on the puller sharply with a hammer, and hopefully the combination of the impact along with all of the other forces still present will release the flywheel. If that doesn't work, you may need to take it to a machine shop.

@highlandoutboards

for the spark issue, make sure your ground connections on the power Pak and coils are good. if still no spark, you probably have a bad power Pak... for the oiler, yes. you can bypass and premix your oil/gas.

I have a 1988 9.9hp Johnson tiller and since I have owned it amybe 5 years now and when first purchased the throttle was and can be very hard to get up to full throttle.It seems to be very hard to twist and won't move past half throttle and my suspicions are the part rotating under the flywheel which has the cam that contacts the throttle roller for carb.Can these get gunked up or something that would make it hard to rotate?First time I ever used it was afraid of breaking something and then I felt it pop kinda and it went to full.Any experience with this?
@highlandoutboards
@highlandoutboards 7 лет назад
If the shifter is in neutral, these motors have a throttle stop to protect from over-reving the motor. Does the issue with not moving past half throttle go away if you put the motor in forward gear?
@newyota1
@newyota1 7 лет назад
I am aware of the stop in neutral.I should have mentioned I am in gear and already moving and trying to accelerate when I feel the resistence.I thought I read somewhere this could be a problem caused by a build up of whatever under flywheel.
@newyota1
@newyota1 7 лет назад
Found my problem.It was the throttle cable.It would stick intermittently.I did pull the flywheel for ease of working on things and checking it out under there.New cable on now and it works smooth.I wonder if you know the torque specs for the flywheel?thanks.
