Thanks. I saw this video a while back and hadn't really thought about it again. I ran into the same situation earlier this week. I work in plant maintenance and the line was ready to go back up soon. I was trying all kinds of stuff. I was starting to get worried until I remembered this video. This bearing was oxidized bad too. I thought there was no way this could work. I did it and it worked like a charm. You really helped me out of a bind.

Thank you so much for this tip, I tried it on a pilot bearing that is pressed into a crankshaft, and it worked like a charm! Amazing technique. Grease would never work, it would just be pushed out through the balls without doing anything. Great tip, one of the best I've seen in the automotive world.

This works 100 percent. You just need a TIGHT fitting bolt, or an old clutch alignment tool works wonders. I broke 2 pullers from autozone, and tried a grease gun...this was the best thing...since sliced bread.

Works GREAT on pilot bearings that are too small for pilot bearing pullers. Also, it’s much easier to fill it behind the bearing with bread than it is with grease.

This freaking works! Thanks for the video. Although I was so excited I told my wife about it and she said oh yeah I've done that before making this highly accomplished mechanic feel dumb but in all fairness she used to rough in electrical on houses and lay tile!

Anyone that thinks this might be crazy, it absolutely works. I remember my brother calling me for help finishing up a clutch job on his Jeep. We then realize we don't have a puller for the pilot bushing. I do some quick Googling, find this method, and my brother was like "I don't have any bread." I look over at the remnants of the Arby's sandwich I had lying there and pull the bread from it, and within a few minutes the bushing was out and we were going back together.

Never saw it done with bread before, cool. The cavity also looks very clean after the bread was out

Dude - I owe you a beer! I have been struggling to get the pilot bushing out of my 1950 Chevy (engine in the car, bushing in the crank not the flywheel). Without success I tried two different pilot bearing pullers and even tried threading a bolt into the pilot bushing to use a homemade puller, bushing didn't even budge. I was skeptical when I watched your video, but I was also out of ideas. I ground the threads down a bit on a 7-inch long 5/8-inch bolt to match the ID of the bushing (I could easily rotate the bolt in the bushing but not wiggle it l back and forth). I think I pounded an entire slice in and then switched to a bigger hammer. Low and behold after a few hard blows with the bigger hammer it started coming out! And to top it off now my engine is fortified with 8 essential vitamins! In all seriousness thanks for a great video!

The last time I had to do this job I grabbed a handful of paper from my shredder and put it in a bucket of water. I used the bread for my sandwich and when finished I packed the bearing cavity with soggy paper and followed the rest of your instructions.

Pack with bread, then bake at 350°F for twenty minutes. The bearing will slip right out and your work space will smell wonderful!

I understand why the upload is needed. To educate those that DONT know this. Any technician worth their salt would have known this trick already. Good production though otherwise with clear instructions for the noobs.

this actually works, I used a cut off 1/2" drive extension and bread to remove the pilot bearing on my SBC. Alot cleaner than the grease method

Brilliant !! I used this idea as far back as 1955 yes I'm an old dog. But so good that you have taken the time to explain it to the next generation If and only if you had a very accurate pilot you could use grease as I once did but cleaning it up away from the plate was a drag. Used this trick the other day, with an oversize bolt grind down to right size and some exhaust repair paste :P worked like a charm ;)

Great trip - I’ve been told that grease can be used for blind bearing removal but I’ve never tried it, I think the viscosity of the grease i normally use is too thin but the bread ‘paste’ as we can see just the thing and easily obtainable!👍 do you think windowpane putty would do the same job?🤔 John🇬🇧
