It's clear the automaker designed this to be repaired at an auto shop because 90% of rotors do not come with this useless screw in them because the lug nuts will hold the rotors in place. Thanks for the informative video 👋.

It’s not a design flaw. The only reason they are there is for the assembly line when they manufacture the car they need the screws to put the car together. They serve no other function. That’s why they seem like there is no purpose, because that’s the only purpose.

I used a different method on my acrua tl and my parents equinox. If the retaining screw stripped or rusted in there then just use a nail punch and place it at the outer edge of the screw. tap with a hammer and within 20 seconds i was able to get the screw to turn on both cars. It slightly deforms the outer edge of the screw but I was able to still use in both cases. Do a search on seized rotor screw.

Nice video. I had to drill mine out on an Accord. I got a real nice big OA but thought that drilling it out worked better. I reuse the screws but put anti seize on them so next time they screw out with out any issues, normally. But I live in WI and we have the rust issues too. All that precipitation made those rotors mad rusty.

Any Asian brand car does not use Phillips screws although they appear to be Phillips. They are Japanese Industrial Standard screws and require a JIS screwdriver to remove without stripping the head. The JIS screwdriver does not have a sharp point like that of the Phillips and the bevels are much shorter. You can order the JIS on Amazon. I hope this helps.

I've watched numerous video's where guys spend lots of time getting those out. Don't spend more than two minutes on them before going for the drill. They are not needed and serve no purpose. They were only there to hold the rotor in place going down the assembly line. Drill 'em and be done with it.

Nice one man. I hate those screws. The only purpose I think they serve is to keep the rotor from falling off on the assembly line. They never want to come out! I drill em out too or hit them with the OA torch. BTW the car in the intro is bad ass!

I didn't even know that these screws existed until I went to work on my dad's Accord, took his wheels off and was like "WTH is that?" The rotors on my Lexus don't have these screws on them at all, not even the countersunk holes for them. I wonder if Toyota in general doesn't bother with this silliness.

@@zerrodefexI guess all Japanese and South Korean brands have these screws.

my impact driver phillips head bit broke off in the screw slot so now the drill will not center and it goes to the side and gets dull real fast any sugestions? I already tried a diamond coated bit on a dremel to try and make a strait slot across the screw... should I try a rotary cutting disc to make a bigger slot?
@klowny1969

You can try..try hammering the screw and then chiseling it to try and unscrew it

@@klowny1969 yepper.. Those stuck rusted threads are probably the cause.. I think I should have hit it with the hammer and a punch first and penetrating oil first before using the hand impact to spare every ft/lb of torque I could.. Which probably caused the bit to sheer off cause it was too much torque for it to handle... And I had that same bit for years.

What size bit is that? I don’t want to damage the threads. The head of my set screw snapped off somehow and I can’t get a new one in to secure my rotor: Bmw

The rotor screw is technically called a rotor setter. It's not necessary, just for factory. You don't need it.
