Nice to see what you use to clean egr :) I've always use it and It's one of the best NON EGR cleaner which clean EGR perfectly.

Actually did this today after seeing your video. Mr Muscle worked a treat! Dont know what differences I'll notice if any but it defiantly needed doing as it was pretty thick in there. 👍

I think it maybe best to just clean the EGR valve after reading someones comment about a blanking off an EGR valve on a Freelander. it's probably best to leave the EGR system as manufactured in a direct firing diesel engine. EGR reduces the temperature of combustion ( and hence the NOX pollutants ) by introducing inert (spent) gases into the combustion chamber in carefully measured amounts by the engines computer. When you remove it, you may notice some increase in power or economy due to the increased cylinder heat and hence pressure. This apparent short term increase in performance is why many mechanics recommend the procedure. But this increase in heat and pressure also causes premature failure of the direct firing fuel injectors since the tips of the injectors are directly in the combustion chamber. New injectors cost between $500 - $1000 EACH normally. It will also cause failure of the injector to cylinder head seals - usually a copper washer arrangement - and this results in mixing of coolant into fuel or fuel into engine oil ( or both ). This may entirely destroy your engine due to cross contamination, as well as causing the famous "run away diesel" phenomenon where the diesel revs out of control and blows up despite being turned off - due to it running on it's own fuel soaked engine oil. This is apart from the premature failure of exhaust valves and piston rings and turbochargers due to the abnormally high temperatures. A cynic might conclude that a mechanics real reason for recommending the disabling of the EGR system is the guarantee that he will make $1000's of dollars from the poor sap who does it when the engine goes pop.

Is it wise to carefully pull out the gunk in the metal assembly the EGR valve fits onto? At 8:18 you can see the same gunk that was in the valve continues into the next part.

Thanx george, removed my egr from my Nov 2006, X5, E53. Bit more difficult getting those 4 torx bolts off but persevered !! Mine not as glogged up as urs, as only done 110,000km(68,000m), but used oven cleaner then petrol to rinse as did not have brake cleaner ?? Allback together in an afternoon. I had that extra part, what did u call it?? Shudder, shutter valve ??

George, I just bought M47 BMW e46 Coupe 2004 , from my friend , and my friend told me 2 years ago he had a problem with his EGR system. Actually his EGR cooler was destroyed, by the hot fumes coming from the EGR , I guess. He changed it for the Mahle EGR cooler, but since he did that in a BMW service in Italy, I doubt he told them to clean his EGR while they are operating on it. Many people told me if I clean EGR and intake manifold , I could get some "leaks" in the system after that, since "the car filled the holes he has there" and now when you clean the manifold, you will actually "open those little holes" .... Sounds to me like stupid logic, what do you suggest? Im not planning to delete the EGR, but do you suggest a good old cleaning of the manifold and EGR valve? I can see in some videos that you are cleaning the EGR only, even though we can see the end of the intake manifold looks gross while you are getting the EGR back in place. Will it help my car accelerate a bit better?

If i do this along with intake manifold and intake ports. Clear the codes. Im hoping its fine. What do i do about MAF sensor code?

I bet the intake needs cleaning as well bro, I just did both on mine, both were full of carbon. As well as in the cylinder head whilst you at it.

Any issues with oil consumption on a series 3 2006 2.0 tdi. The step son bought one with 100k and its using a bit since the service. Done the vortex as per your video. Any tips?

I used the back of a junior hacksaw blade to wire off the carbon and then mr muscle , finished off with some cheap coca cola and rinsed with water. Came up better than new

The oven cleaner should preferably sit a lot longer than a few minutes. Btw. I assume you haven't received the parts for the v-belt job yet so you are doing this while waiting for parts to arrive? That's the only issue I have with Autodoc, they are super-slow delivering compared to pretty much everyone else. Even if I always make sure to only order part in store, it's not unsual to have to wait at least 1 week and some times more than 2 weeks. So I stopped using them for parts for urgent jobs.

Be advised that oven cleaners damage aluminum, it even states on the package. I've seen lots of people clean EGRs, Turbos etc with it... Do it at your own risk. Better buy the specific product for EGRs, Turbos/vanes, MAF etc etc.

Before doing this job get a new crankcase breather tube The old one will be brittle AF and snap when you take it off or put it back on. One of the two hex bolts holding the EGR will be rusted and impossible to remove so you'll need a removal tool or carbide drills. George shows utopia, in reality it's not like that at all.

My egr is no longer there I deleted it but be ware folks pros of deleting us no more cleaning it and no more egr issues but cobs is fuel economy becomes slightly worse as the recirculation is no longer there of unburnt gases and fuel so anything that was being recirculated is being thrown out the exhaust there's pros n cons to egr systems also I advise deleting the cooler too as it too can cause leaks coolant and thermostat issues both egr valve and egr cooler deletes are compliant with MOT and car will still pass as long as catalyst is still in car

And does it need lubricating after cleaning or anything like that? Apologies if that sounds daft. My engine doesn’t seem to recognise I’ve pressed the throttle until a couple of seconds after and sometimes have judder issues at high speeds so hoping it’s this. Cheers

My mechanic even cleaned the intake manifold & I was shocked to see the amount of crude built up... He suggested a metal blocking plate but warned about emission control norms, so I didn't go ahead...

Nice one George. Similar process for my N47? I checked my error log with BimmerLink the other day and it said I had previously had an EGR value control position error, and a rate deviation, but now clear. It had been a cold start the other day. Worth cleaning do you think? 130k miles. Thanks.

I did this and the carbon on my car was ridiculous it’s was maybe double even triple what’s in this video and it was also rock hard like literal hard Plastic and not soft at all. Anyone know why? Car runs beautifully even before cleaning the EGR and it’s only done 130k miles. (Basically not even broken in the engine m47)

Never thought to try oven cleaner - thanks for the tip George! I will try using that with a tin of Holt's EGR cleaner next time I do the throttle body in my 2014 2.0 TDI. Last time I went through a tin of Wynn's EGR cleaner and half tin of Holt's EGR. Wynn's was almost £10 a tin and Holt's £3 and had similar effect but the clinging foaming action of oven cleaner makes more sense!

Been watching your vids learning what I can, some of the best vids on here, nice and clear, Tried to get mine off today to clean, 318d e91 N47 engine, egr at the front drivers side, so looks different than this , disconnected everything and removed the two torx bolts but it would not come out , I could get it to turn left and right a little with some gentle knocks with a hammer but it wouldn't lift out. I commented on o e of your videos this afternoon asking if there's any tips on removing it or if I'm missing something??

Anoying invention these things

For some reason every time i pull the intake pipe off my M57 330d the EGR is squeaky clean, never had to clean it. I can't see any evidence it's been blocked off so i presume it's doing what it should do. My mates 530d on the other hand was worse that the one in the video! We didn't use mr. muscle but did use copious amounts of carb n choke cleaner. Top tip, use an old toothbrush as an agitator....worked well.

Pulling the head and doing valve stems, hydraulic lifters and valve reseating would be good to see, I've only ever come across one video of an M57 rebuild to that extent and it's in Russian I think, let's make an English one 😁

You can use petrol to clean very good shits from diesel. But the best thing is to take out this shit EGR valve,because only thing wich this valve doing is clog your engine with garbage 😏

Would removing the valve affect the software at all? I’ve been told mine needs replacing and then it will need a software update, Would like to try to clean instead.
