How to: Remove Crank Pulley Bolt Without Impact Gun, using the Starter & Breaker Bar - Easy!

Here's an old school trick that has made my life easier. If you don't have an impact or the crank pulley bolt is just too tight, you can place a breaker bar on the frame and crank the engine over. Don't start it up - remove the plug wires to prevent a fuel injected engine from starting. The torque from the starter is enough to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt. Be sure you know which direction your engine rotates to properly position the breaker bar. I'm showing this trick on my Toyota Pickup with 22R engine, but have done this on other vehicles as well. If you're worried about the breaker bar leaving a mark on the frame, you can put a piece of cardboard between them.
Here's a 1/2" drive 30" breaker bar, similar to the one I used: amzn.to/38gPzC1

Drill- Packedge in typical box, came with a tool bag (added bonus), two batteries, one charger, drill, and driver. Two words "plenty of Torque" ru-vid.comUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv well I guess that's three. Nice upgrade from current setup. Has belt clips, I don't think I will be using those. Driver and drill were bigger than what I expected but it is an upgrade from the current setup. For the money I would say that this is a great setup for Professionals and DIY/Weekend warriors.

Couple of ways to stop engine fron starting. Pull injector fuse and disconnect crankshaft sensor. Also my Buick regal didn't have room on frame to hold breaker bar. I didn't have car jacked up too high and used breaker bar with pipe to wedge against garage floor. Spun it right off. Stay clear in case bolt doesn't give and lifts car off floor.

Good old-timer’s trick. I’ve had to use this method a couple times. Honda decided they just HAD to be different though and build engines that spin counter clockwise. That’s when Mr. Milwaukee comes out to play. 😄

Hi, I really like your channel! You think you could upload a tutorial on how to align the direction of the front wheels (caster-camber) thanks!
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 4 года назад
To be honest, an alignment is about the only thing I will take my vehicles to a shop to have done. I tried it myself on a couple of vehicles and could never get it dialed in quite right. They do sell plates and tools that make it easier for a DIY'er, but at the expense of tire wear and the car not handling like it should, that's one thing I leave to the Pros. The only alignment I will do myself is adjust the toe on my 85 Toyota because it has a solid axle and only requires a measuring tape to check.

What about if the bolt is torqued more than the engine torque?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 3 года назад
it is really the starter motor that is providing the torque here, not the actual combustion from the engine. If it didn’t work, another option is to put it in first gear if manual, have someone hold their foot on the brake pedal, And use a really long cheater bar to break the bolt loose.

will this method work for an interference engine? i wanna try this on my honda but i'm concerned that if i dont have the valves in the right position i could get pistons smacking into them if i try to start it
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage Год назад
This only affects the crank pulley, there is a cog gear on the crank shaft behind the timing cover that the timing belt rides on. That will always rotate with the engine, not the crank pulley. Crank pulley is just for the accessory belts.
@MuddafukhingdisKUST
@MuddafukhingdisKUST Год назад
@@6thGearGarage i changed my cylinder head out and the timing belt is currently not attached to the head, so the valvetrain won't spin together with the head when i apply the starter
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage Год назад
@@MuddafukhingdisKUST Oh then that is dangerous to try w/o the timing belt installed and everything at TDC. I guess you could leave it in 1st gear and hold the brakes really hard and that should keep the crankshaft from rotating. But still the life of your valves are all depending on the clutch not slipping.
