Awesome, I did pull the engine without ramp just engine crane and axle stands without removing gearbox

Your video's are great. Especially not many video's out there dedicated on a f10 series BMW.

Thanks for your message. I aim to cover the majority of the maintenance on BMW F10 and F11 chassis on my channel. A lot more content in the pipeline. I will be showing a the full timing chain replacement procedure along with multiple other jobs on the N57 N47 engines and HP8-70 transmission🤝 Hope to see you around. I might do a giveaway very soon to celebrate my 200th video on the channel

Very difficult task but great video. Any specific reason you did not change the chains just by removing the gearbox
@TheKeenMechanic

BMW recommend the engine removal from Engine bay, but this is not the only reason. I took it out as you will see in the next videos I did a lot of other work apart from the timing chains and was a lot easier that way. I also washed the engine completely as it was covered in oil and grease. I used this opportunity to properly clean the engine bay too🤝🏻

Thanks for your video. I have a F10 N47 with a broken timing chain. Can you let me know if I can swap a n57 into the car with just the ecu, immobiliser and gearbox? Or do I need the loom too. If this is too hard, then would I be able to use a n47 from any car? Thank you
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic Год назад
If I were you I would just use another used N47 as it will be a massive job to convert to N57. Hope you get it sorted. Thanks for your message and best of luck with the project

Wpuld it be possible to remove engine without removing gearbox? Having front end removed? Thanks
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 9 месяцев назад
I was initially planning to do that but you need to lower the box to access the bolts that secure the gearbox to the engine to remove the engine. Hope this makes sense🤝🏻

Quick question: do you think it would be possible to remove the engine and gearbox together by removing the front end off the car (bumper, crash bar, rads, etc.? This would make the job easier to do on my driveway I feel.
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic Год назад
Yes, this is a good option for you. You will need an engine crane for this task. The only negative about this is you will have to disconnect the ac system and lose the ac gas. Sometimes also it is difficult to disconnect the ac hoses from ac compressor and radiator but you may be lucky. Also you will have to properly regass the system. Don't run it dry as there is oil with the gas and can cause damage to the compressor
@kingGar27
@kingGar27 Год назад
Perfect, that makes sense. It’s similar to how I do the clutch and flywheel in my 2001 PD130 Passat. What are the main things I would need to do under the car? Disconnect drive shaft, unplug wires from gearbox (it’s a manual), disconnect gear linkage (from within the car?) Anything else? I don’t mind doing the AC. There is a garage beside me who can degas and regas it. No harm to have it serviced anyway after 110k miles.

@@kingGar27 If you watch my video on the removal of gearbox and this one for removing the engine you will see all steps in detail. My box is auto so yours will be slighly more more with gear linkage. 🤝🏻

The keen mechanic, hello i had an e53 m54 engine rebuilt recently. And we used regular Castrol 10w-40 oil and there seems to be a ticking noise that's faint and doesn't happen for long, and I am not sure if it's from the timing chain area but What oil would you recommend for this vehicle in hot climate like ours?
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic Год назад
Hi I have a few friends who run their M54s in hot climate on 5w-40 Check what the local dealer recommends, you don't have to buy from them, just ask😜

Do you actually need to pull out gearbox? I don’t have proper car lift, but axle stands where I could remove bell housing bolts
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 6 месяцев назад
This has been asked before, unfortunately the top bolts that hold the engine to the gearbox are inaccessible so you need to drop the gearbox to access them🤝🏻

hi need to take out the engine for changing crankshaft?
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 9 месяцев назад
Probably easier to take engine out instead of dropping full suspension, steering rack, having to support engine with an engine bar then drop sump and do all work from underneath. Just take engine out and put on engine stand and do the job properly

Great video KM. Mate do you know if it's possible to engine swap the first gen f10 535d (n57d30t0 220kw 299ps) to the second gen motor (n57d30t1 230kw 313ps)? Mine is a the first gen and it's spun a bearing and the only engines I can find here in Australia are the 230kw ones. Had a chance to buy a damaged 2nd gen complete car from auction but was worried it wouldn't work.

I would imagine it should be possible but can't say 100% as I personally haven't done it. You might be able to find more help in the facebook groups on this. Thanks for your message and please get back to me to let me know how you get on as I would like to know myself.

@@TheKeenMechanic I did ask the question. One said no but after I mentioned I would be getting the complete car another said it's possible. Just worried it's going to be a lot of work ecu / wiring side if they are different.

@@joud360 It will be a lot of work indeed even if there are no complications and everything fits. I think it will be a great learning and you should record your work and share online. Worst case part out and sell for parts. I think you will manage if you do your research
