In this video I show a real-time example of the results you get when you grind the top layer of concrete off your floor. After scraping, sanding, sweating and using every nasty chemical within reach, I finally came to my senses and got myself set up with some grinding equipment. This is effective for removing pain, glue, epoxy, mastic, thin-set and even for leveling out high spots in your shop and/or garage floor. I got by with just the one grinding disk for my two-car garage and it still has TONS of life left! Hope this helps anyone else looking to revamp their floors! Thanks for watching!

I’ve been debating that dust removal attachment for my grinder since yesterday and you just sold me! Man, I’m amazed to see your video stays clear of concrete dust!! It makes such a mess and that crap goes everywhere without it. I already have the other equipment so now I’m convinced and ready to get this going! Thanks again.

I'm glad it helped! The first day of grinding I had dust everywhere. As in, the shop, everything we own, the neighbors house... everywhere. This saved my but big time. Good luck!

Great point about doing it this way versus using a buffer. Once I started planning this project I realized that my floor is too uneven for a buffer and that I need the grinder to remove the really bad high spots. Awesome video. Thank you.

Exactly. I've just finished two days of trying to clean up a big spilled (and hardened) tar mess on my garage floor, left over from previous owner. I've been going at it with a scraper, muriatic acid, expenive chemicals, etc., etc. Finally, it hits me: GRIND this shit off! I'll be getting my grinder (need one anyway) and disk in the very near future. Thanks for confirming the idea! And thanks for all the links. Very helpful.

I have a 300 sf concrete basement floor with 3 layers of old, flaking paint topped off with carpet glue. Hurricane Ida entered my basement and it's time to remove all the above crud. What's your opinion of the recommended diamond cup for my job. I'll be doing it with a 4.5 inch grinder? Thanks

1:50 I have the same dust shroud as you, in both a 4 1/2 inch and 7/9 inch models. I think they would greatly benefit from a larger exhaust fitting. The 1 1/4 inch I believe greatly reduces the amount of dust collected.

Howdy Bud. Welp with some high hopes, I tried your setup to grind off a layer of paint over fiberglass resin that one of the prior homeowners of our home nuttily installed over our front porch stairs. We've been chipping it off with a mallet and chisel which was slowly working. Bottom line was the get-up took it off but also took off some of the old red concrete on the stairs. Didn't seem to go as smoothly as your job! Darn it!

Were going to try your method tomorrow. We have a floor with peel and stick tile we have been trying to remove from a kitchen floor. We rented floor stripper with a blade that didn't work, we tried a blow torch, and we tried acetone. For three days we tried and barely got anywhere! The Peel & Stick Tile has a rubber backing that sticks to the floor!
@InspireWoodcraft
@InspireWoodcraft 5 лет назад
That was exactly how I started as well. Pain thinner, acetone, mineral spirits, heat gun, torch, scraper and elbow grease... NOTHING would work! This worked like a charm and took just as long as all the other methods put together and they didn't even work! Good luck! Let me know how it turns out.

Hey Jodee, Great way to do this. I have a 90 year old garage that needs work but the adjacent photography studio is where I will use this. Two things I want to mention. 1. On the focus thing at the end, check your metering mode. You're probably set to matrix metering where the camera takes in the entire scene and focuses on the largest parts. If you switch to Spot metering it will focus where you place the cursor in the view finder. Drawback: It may change your exposure mode too if your set to Auto. Best thing to do is set to Matrix and Auto, shoot a single photo and note the settings. Then switch to Manual mode and set the metering to Spot, use the other setting from the still. Boom! in focus and properly exposed. 2. I see that we both use the same barber. My garage is not air conditioned so the sweat rolls off my head. Beanies or caps from a local cycling shop are made to wick away the sweat with are uber helpful when dealing with that much dust and the sweat too. Another great video, keep up the good work!

Thank you, sir! I wish I could come trade grinding for learning. I was so bummed when I got the footage and found out it was focused on the bandsaw! I think you’re at least on the right path with what happened. It’s set to evaluative metering (Canon) and single-point AF, which I set in the center of the viewfinder. I’m also wondering if I bumped it with my hand and moved the focus point. It wouldn’t be the first time as this camera is a little small for my hands sometimes (only downfall so far). I usually use tracking for talking head stuff but I’m not sure why I didn’t. I will try this. Thanks a ton, my friend!

The old owners of my home hired some crew to put in wall to wall stick-on laminate flooring. Now, in the summer, the glue is oozing up between the cracks. My question to you is, doesn't the glue eventually muck up the grinder wheel and clog the diamond blades?
@victorrodriguez4081
@victorrodriguez4081 2 года назад
I see no one answered your question. What I do with glue that is for lvt/lvp and/or pressure sensitive adhesive I put either sand or flour (I go more with flour since it's cheaper) and spread it evenly where I am going to remove glue. The flour prevents the glue from sticking on your cup wheel or scrafier and the floor. Also makes it easier to sweep up.

The 4.5 works, but man that takes a loooong time. The buffer style swing machine is usually a no go. Well done, but I know that it was a hard slog. Ever decide to polish that floor, hmu.
@BrutusFly
@BrutusFly 3 года назад
I was just doing this with the same setup and was wishing for a less aggressive tool. Those grinders and disks remove a lot of material quickly! I want to flatten more accurately without removing too much material too quickly. I'd like someone to make a diamond velcro disk for my little random orbit sander that could more gently remove a thin layer of concrete. Ever seen anything like it?

4:50 Hard to keep it flat on the floor. I find that a heavier 7 inch Makita grinder easier as it just about balances itself. If you are dust collecting concrete it is basically a MUST to have a cyclonic stage in your vacuum and a filter bag, too. Otherwise you are going to be very frustrated with suction loss.
@jameswilliams663
@jameswilliams663 4 года назад
AB_015 you are correct. Extremely difficult to keep level - which is absolutely necessary to get the job done. I am not getting acceptable results with the 4 inch grinder with diamond cup attachment. Regretfully, will rent the 7 inch from HD. Or perhaps buy one, then sell on craigslist

Hi, kudos for the smart workshop rework and getting it done! Still, I wonder if it would have been a better idea to go and rent a en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concrete_grinder . My friends restored a large wooden floor with a rented machine - they could work standing up and quicker with a much larger diameter disc.
@InspireWoodcraft
@InspireWoodcraft 5 лет назад
Well like I said (I think) in the video, this floor is so uneven that a larger diameter disk would have most likely floated over a lot of the smaller dips and pockets. Plus the larger disks can't get into the tight corners like a smaller disk can, so you end up having to go back and touch-up with the smaller disk anyway.
